Ben's Week In Review: March 3

To be honest, I'm almost more excited about Beyond's release date than I am about the PS4. But I imagine that'll change the closer we get to the new console's launch.

The PS4 NEEDS the best launch lineup in PlayStation history

When I saw that Sony Worldwide Studios vice president Michael Denny said the PlayStation 4 could end up having the best launch software lineup in the brand's history, I replied out loud- "Yeah, well, it better." Sony can talk all they want about appealing to core gamers but there's only way to truly do that: Give us the games. New multimedia, multiplayer and social media features are essentially meaningless without the software. I don't care what age or era this is; we're still talking about a video game console. That remains the primary purpose of that device, despite all its bells and whistles. Therefore, it just can't be successful if that primary purpose isn't fulfilled and hence, a hefty assortment of great games right off the bat is essential.

Thankfully, it does appear possible. Killzone: Shadow Fall by itself might already put it head and shoulders above other system launches, but if DriveClub is a launch title that delivers big time, and inFamous: Second Son also releases on day one, that would seal it for me. Multiplatform releases like Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, and Destiny are really just icing the cake. Not that I care much about the latter.

Crytek is both right and wrong

In trying to explain the lower-than-expected review scores for Crysis 3, developer Crytek has pointed toward "gamer fatigue." On the one hand, he makes a good point- As we near the end of the generation, people really are getting tired of the same ol' same ol', and are anxiously lying in wait for something new. They anticipate better experiences lying right around the corner and besides, the bar has been raised awfully high for FPSs this generation. Still, on the other hand, I call Crytek's claim somewhat of a smokescreen. Crysis 3 may be the studio's "masterpiece," as boss Cevat Yerli claims, but many fans and critics didn't see it that way. They saw it as a backward step, a nod to the flashy and quick rather than a more patient, tactical style of gameplay.

It just felt like Crysis blended with Call of Duty. I'm sorry, Yerli, but it did. Obviously, the game is still great and the campaign is great fun (if a little short). But while Crytek is right about gamer fatigue - because that really is playing a role these days - they're avoiding the major problem. ...and if you ask reviewers and long-time fans of the series, Cevat, you'd know what that problem is. Really, just visit an active forum or community.

Personal gaming update

Finally getting ready to start playing Halo 4 and I'm also looking forward to playing more of Tomb Raider. The review for that will be coming this week, as will the review for MLB 13: The Show, which I have for both PS3 and Vita. Then next week it's God of War: Ascension, which had best be wicked bad-ass. It's GoW; it has to be! I'm currently playing through the co-op adventure in Portal 2; my girlfriend and I are having lots of fun with. Also doing some Resistance 3 co-op, which is a blast. Might try LittleBigPlanet 2 as well. We like playing some games together, and that's a plus. :)

This month, even though Ascension should be huge, my most anticipated game is easily Bioshock Infinite. That I can't wait to play.

An epic launch is essential this time round,i wouldn't be upset if The last guardian was a cross gen release, along with the others listed in the article it would make it the most awesome launch EVER!
Crytek make great tech but average games, never gave a crap about any of the characters.Their best games are far cry & crysis but have been steadily sliding downhill since eg. crysis 2&3.
Graphics don't make a game epic.
PGU
Hitman collection untill GOW A & maybe Tomb raider.

Looking forward to that Tomb Raider review, been trying to download the GoW demo but apparently games don't actually download in the background while playing other games anymore.

Trying to cram a week's worth of gaming into my weekends is tough, playing Ni No Kuni, Darksiders II, and Amalur.

I believe if your playing a game that streams heavily from the HDD eg. GTA 4 or RDR then it won't download even offline.
Could be wrong though.

I think it all depends on how much memory / bandwidth you're using for the other thing. I know that I can't DL while watching Netflix, but can if I'm watching something I've saved to HD. Likewise I can DL whole playing something small, like Closure (which I'm in love with right now), but not when I play something like LA Noire.

I'm thinking games that log you into servers (like everything from EA) disrupt things, I swear they used to download, though very slowly, even while I played a normal game. Otherwise I never would have gotten anything since I almost never just turn it on and let it download without me doing anything.

World-

I think your right. Now that I think about ive done the same. It may be games like you said, that need to be connected, that prevent downloads in the background.

I remember I used to play Monsters to pass time while stuff was downloading.

@ everybody,

Background download is disabled automatically if the game has any kind of online connectivity to it, whether or not it has a multiplayer component, and if it does have multiplayer, it doesn't matter whether or not you are actually using it.

Being singed out of the PlayStation Network should allow anything to download in background while you play.

And yes World and bigrailer, you're right, older games that didn't have online connectivity will let you background download while still signed in.

At least that is what I have figured out through much trial and error after having downloaded close to 1500 items from the PlayStation Store over the last 6+ years.

The new TR seems to be pulling in decent scores. That's good. I like Crystal Dynamics. I wonder though just how far it strays from the formula that defined it. But I suspect the formula that defined it doesn't have the mass market appeal like a dramatized survival action game full of hollywood-style set pieces and drama sequences.

My impression of Crysis 3, based on critical feedback, is that it doesn't quite trump Crysis 2 and the improvements expected of the next evolution of the series never happen for as neat as it looks. I understand the whole hardware fatigue thing, but I think Yerli is placing too much emphasis on hardware and visual prowess defining the quality of the experience over ingenuity of the genre. I have little doubt if we saw the dollars spent and man hours worked this past gen on any specific genre, the lion's share would have been on FPS games, or shooters in general, over any other one genre (probably over any 2 or 3 genres ;) It's a genre chalk full of high rollers and expectations are fierce and shoring up with a game that doesn't seem to make many strides just don't cut it.

PGU: NGS2 Plus and DOA5. I finally unlocked the Alpha boss in DOA5 (lots of work required) I'm now spending more time online in fights and I'm growing more excited for the Vita release of the game.
As for NGS2 Plus, it's a mixed bag from a technical standpoint. I came into it hoping it'd be a better port than NGS Plus, not that NGS Plus was a bad port but I can always hope for better. It just can present some nasty slowdown during heavier battles and the game seems to drop resolution on the drop of a dime, given even a mild amount of processing stress. I get the feeling Team Ninja didn't spend a whole lot of time optimizing the Vita's abilities and gave us a 'get the job done' port. Ultimately, it's great having my favorite action game in a mobile faithful form so that is hugely awesome but it's too bad it wasn't handled with a bit more care. I suspect if Itagaki was still at the helm this wouldn't have released as a quick port, but at the same time I should be thankful, because if Itagaki was at the helm it probably would've NEVER released on Vita. Period. That would be bad.

The ps4 doesnt need the best line up ever, what theyve announced is plenty good enough.

Crytek is a weird subject. I like their games, but cant stand their egos. They really are not right at all, because they are just trying to find blame. Sure they make a good point about the late generation fatigue. But they developed a game (I havnt played myself, just from reviews and here say is where I base this) that really fell suspect to the CoD syndrome. I suppose thats a good way to explain a game that plays it safe, and doesnt do anything extra-ordinary.

GoW: Ascension looks freaking awesome. Now I can understand why they held off on the sp and were promoting the mp so heavily. I understand the mp is a new aspect and they want people to see that. But if they showed the sp that they are showing now, this is the only game people would be talking about. The new launch trailer is freaking epic. It looks crazy good, amd the scale matches that of GoW:3. EPIC! I have no doubt it will be a stellar GoW experience. They just need to keep the marketing up, because I feel like only showcasing the mp for so long really affected the hype for this game. But none the less, it looks superb.

PGU: not much, again im not totally blown away by Dishonored which I started. I really dont think its a mid to high 9 game. I said it last week, but it doesnt impress me. The stealth is whack because its an fp perspective, and it works as well as it should which isnt great because of the first person view. The game play is good, it plays like bioshock. The story bothered me from the start, because it was not original at all and very, very blah. There was no tension or build up to what happened at the beginning, which the story is based off. The combat still feels out of control for me. For an fps its just too quick making things inaccurate, its super light and yes its responsive but in a way that again seems inaccurate. Oh well. Its good thats all that matters, rather its fun!

Playing some Borderlands 2 again as well. Ive come to the realization that we may not get the level increase any time soon due to the complications Gearbox is having with it so... the game must go on; because I love it.

And still chugging away at Skyrim. Game is just too good, and its so freaking big I dont know if ill ever finish it.

I'm not excited about acquiring PS4 at launch. I wonder how reliable will it be, since price is not a problem for me. It would be wonderful that we could get the digital copy of a game If we buy it at full price when it gets release.

PGU: I love Ni No Kuni. The best rpg I have play since Rogue Galaxy.

Didn't like crysis 2. Played the hour trial and even played it on Gaikai on my pc. Dunno, just didn't sit well with me. Felt like an akward love child between halo and CoD. They think their so beast but the only game i've ever heard of that they've released is crysis. Big achievement bro's.

PS4 has me sold on killzone shadowfall. Don't need nothing but the awesomeness that is KZ. Of course i want more but i am still playing kz3. Im more than certain i will still be playing kz4 even if its all i own with my ps4.

pgu: F.E.A.R has been my main game for the past couple of days. Good to play the classics but man oh man does the lack of iron sights bug me. Dark Souls with my friend has been pretty frequent as well. I had to stop playing ffx because i play it and i think "I wonder what its going to be like playing this in HD..." It makes me all sad and stuff.

I did decide to re-play Xenosaga Ep.3. I heard from a friend that you can fight ID and Weltall as a secret boss so i have to go back and try and figure it out. I like going old school on games i like. By that i mean no google and no youtube. I gotta figure it out myself.

Anyway hope you all enjoyed the snow. Its been gone over here since it started snowing. Gotta love when it snows 4 days straight then its gone the next day. Talk about anti climatic.

I just don't see the reason the PS3 "needs" to have the best launch lineup when there are two more important 500 lb gorillas sitting in the room.

1- Price. Sony cannot and must not sell the PS4 at a high price similar to what they did with the PS3.

2- Availability. If I want to replace all three of my PS3's with new PS4's, I shouldn't have to wait months to do so.

The games will come, and I will take the Sony exec at is word when he stated that the PS4 will deliver the goods when it comes to software at launch.

it certainly does!
its not only going up the usual competition in M$, ninty, and PC.
but its also going up against valves steambox, that I3 box thing announced at CES which everyone jumped to conclusions was the steambox which gabe debunked.
not to mention ouya, than the real elephant in the room, smartphones and tablets.
its a VERY overcrowded market, so $ony REALLY needs to separate themselves from the herd, and show customers why they should be buying the ps4 instead of anything else.
and that reason is what its always been.
no one has the first party support and access to amazing technology that $ony has!
offer them amazing experiences that no one else can offer, and they will suck up the market like a sponge at a pool party!

cervat was right, customers ARE suffering game fatigue.
but where he was wrong, is his reason why.
there not suffering fatigue because there sick of the systems, or sick of what games offer.
there sick of EVERY SINGLE GOD DAM FRANCHISE HAVING TO BE THE EXACT SAME AS EVERY OTHER FRANCHISE!!!!!!!!!!!!
if we went back to RE being survival horror, MoH being a tactical shooter, crysis being about amazing AI and choices, CoD about the grittiness and horror of war, then there would not be a problem!
but were not, every single time a new game comes out its blurring the lines between itself and other games.
and THAT is why people are suffering fatigue, because thats what happens when you play 1000 games who are almost indistinguishable from each other!
i absolutely freaking loved infamous, but if i played 100 games which were exactly the same as it id want to blow my brains out!

speaking of tomb raider, ive been playing it for 4 days now and i just cant shake my eh attitude towards it!
its so saddening, i was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited for the game!
i was so excited when i got the text from EB on thursday saying it broke street date and i could go pick it up.
then i chuck it into my ps3, absolutely LOVED the opening to it, cringed at the first few sequences, than you pick up a gun and its oh dear.
first of as allot of reviews said it is extremely jarring and a bit stupid how easy and quickly lara becomes accustomed to killing.
the game prides itself on treating lara as just a explorer, a innocent girl, it shocks and horrifies you with what happens at the start, and then all of a sudden its meh.
its like you do something the first time its scary and new to you, but the second time and there on out your a professional with 50 years experience!
just makes NO sense, and really hurts the believe ability and connection you build with the game.
the problem is you can really sense the developers wanted to make this a origins story, show how lara became the kick a$$ machiene we know and love!
but they held back, and kinda did a 180 quickly on because of all the backlash they copped.
i was expecting to start of with a scared girl in a weird scary place, who slowly grows and becomes more confident.
not a girl who starts of scared in a weird place, than goes to sleep, and the next day she wakes up 30 years into the future totally use to the areas and the sadistic sh*t going on!

its really disappointing, i was really worried that this would happen.
that the developers would hold back, and instead of creating a origins story they would use the origins story just as a excuse to create another game.
its a shame because it starts off SOOOOOOOOOO well, the first few moments are THE BEST EVER put into a game EVER!
you really do feel like a lost scared girl in a deep dark place, but then all of a sudden you turn into this hardened explorer who is used to this sh*t.
instead of getting a whole game as a origin story, you get 1 level as a origin story, and the rest is like im playing any other tomb raider game!
such a waste of potential!!!!!!

I'm not convinced Infamous is a system seller based off how much sales for Infamous 2 dropped off when compared to the first game. Infamous got off to a promising start selling 2.57 million copies but Infamous 2 only sold 1.54 million copies. I am having trouble coming up with a reason why Infamous 2 sold over a million copies less. At first I thought the first game being on the greatest hits list helped pad out the first game's sales but Infamous 2's sales were down the first 5 weeks when compared to the first 5 weeks of the original Infamous. That has to be discouraging for Suckerpunch considering how much larger the PS3's install base was when Infamous 2 came out. They have almost identical Metacritic scores. The first Infamous has a a Metascore of 85 while the second game has a score of 83 so that can't be it.

Suckerpunch did get some backlash when they changed Coles's character design but they changed it back for the most part. Could it be Infamous fans punished Suckerpunch for even attempting a character redesign like original Dante fans punished Team Ninja for Dante's new look? Hard to believe but that's the best theory I have for now. Infamous 2 released in the summer and didn't face a lot of competition so it doesn't look like its release date was a factor. Hmm..strange. I thought the sequel was much improved technically. One of the better looking open world type games you can find.

Killzone 3 sold almost a half million less than KZ2 but at least I can find a reason for that. KZ2 scored higher with critics plus some KZ2 fans didn't like the changes made to KZ3's controls. KZ3 sold 2.42 million copies while KZ2 sold 2.88 million. Sony is a big believer in the franchise. KZ2 is the 10th most expensive game ever created with a budget of over 45 million dollars.

KZ Shadowfall looks great and gives Sony a game to target the hot shooter genre. I truely hope they open the game up some because I thought KZ3 had too many narrow paths on tiny little levels that really constrained the way you could approach a firefight. I dare-say KZ3 had an on rails quality to it Some have said this was done to help incorporate PS Move support. Makes sense to me. Why else would they have made the game like that?

Anyways, I am very excited about the PS4. Sony did a spectacular job laying out a clear vision for their next gen system. 8gb of ultra fast memory usually reserved for high end graphics cards sounds great. Developer friendly is also great news. Finally Sony fans can kiss inferior multiplat games like Skyrim. Fallot3, and Bayonetta goodbye forever.

Clicking on a game and instantly being able to start it while the PS4's dedicated hardware handles the downloads in the background is a great feature.

The main thing I took away from the PlayStation meeting is Sony isn't messing around this time. They have learned from their mistakes and want to reclaim their market leading position they lost generation. I don't see why they can't. Nintendo is no threat. All Sony has to do is beat out Microsoft. I hope Sony is prepared to engange MS when it comes to advertising. MS spent 500 million dollars marketing Kinect. The sky is the limit when it comes to advertising the next Xbox.

Advertising has not been one of Sony's strengths this generation(remember the weird demon baby adds for the PS3's launch?) and I think it has hurt a lot of Sony's lower profile exclusives like Starhawk, Infamous 2, and Sly Cooper. Hell, I didn't even know there was a new Sly Cooper game out now and I frequent many game sites. Game sites usually plastered with 360 advertising.

The good news is Sony has hired a new advertising firm.

I enjoy some of your posts when I read past the insults and generalisms. Not everyone can do that. Nor do they have to as you have witnessed. I can see one having to manage their anger when in public but when writing on the internet it is much easier to control what you write than what you say. Give it a try.

People say that I am distant because I write more that I speak. But when writing it is much easier to bring in the reader versus explaining something to someone verbally. Most of the time anyway.

Sony has got to show us a great launch lineup. They are really not going to have a choice in the matter if they want to come out on top. Sony has never been very good and promo and advertisement. Great stuff? Yes, but not at the forefront of everyones mind. ( Hope I am not wrong). You can bet when MS anounces their next console it will be in your face until it hits the store shelves.

PGU: Been playing DMC and MGSR. As I progress in age I find that my hands cramp all to soon anymore from the quick button combos, and that usually leads to my death and destruction! I hate when that happens. (son laughs at me). Waiting on GOW (another hand cramper) and TR.

Aside from what they have already announced. A Final Fantasy for the PS4 (maybe versus) and if the new Xbox can't be launched this year, a new COD game in Nov. for the PS4 will definitely boost the sales (can't deny the power of COD in sales).

As for Crytek, just another reason to ease the pain of a disappointing sales.

PGU:
I'm into White Knight Chronicles II, been playing it for two weeks now. The combo creation is fun and the story is a typical Japanese style kind of story telling, I liked Kara the most and her story with Caesar.

The battle system is not as great as the gambit system but it's not poor either. And if you figured out the works and the most effective command set, it's quite easy to bring down bosses without using your Knights or Mana Potions.

The more the merrier at launch. As far as it being an ABSOLUTE necessity is a matter of perception. A few GREAT games at launch with a STEADY stream of games thereafter is what I really want.

I think what MS an others bring to the table will be key in what SONY does. Which is why I feel they did not show the actual PS4 console. When MS comes out of the closet Sony can either show off the console to counteract the announcement or even a new game or IP even. Strategy.. it is how to win any game. In chess one must/should think at least four moves ahead.

For those who are paying more attention. Is it possible that since the 360 was selling well that MS waned in order to secretly prepare for this upcoming generation? Casuals they have.. hardcore can be theirs again if they actually being on some new and fresh IP.

one of my buddies works for kmart and gets $5 off a $50 network card. i had him pick me up 2. so for $90 i got $100 on the network. then with the deal they have for every $50 you spend you get $10 im gonna spend at least $100.

i renewed my plus and got the 3 extra months. i plan on getting a season pass for ac3 and the walking dead season 1 for $10. i think i might get that last dlc for batman ac.

i have spent $90 of physical money but get $130 worth of digital money. this is when i am ok with digital. ;)

Everyone, for the record, brighat has been permanently banned. He's not only a liar, he's one of the most extremist, ignorant, xenophobic haters I've ever had the misfortune to know.

Seeing as how he didn't even have the civility to keep this behind closed doors, I will tell you what he wrote in separate emails to me. By the way, this was after he called all Americans lazy, fat and stupid in another thread, and got all mad because someone said his insanely biased and hateful rant was ignorant and idiotic. He added this later-

"Your country could be close to perfect if stupidity and ignorance were eradicated."

"I'm sick of American stupidity and people like you condoning it."

"You're a nobody, you piece of dogshit. You don't matter to anybody. I'm going to let everybody know what a disgusting, evil and vile human being you are."

This, by the way, was based on absolutely nothing besides me saying his views were ignorant and perhaps not something intelligent, educated people say when talking about other countries.

There have already been some Canadian posters here who wanted to make it clear that brighat didn't speak for an entire country, and darn good thing, too. Now, I seriously doubt anyone here has a problem with me banning such a person. You wouldn't want to read half of the ugly, disgusting, uneducated sh** he wrote to me. Just trust me on that. I gave you the lite version.

He actually strikes me as a legitimately dangerous person. And I've seen a lot of crap on the Internet over the years...this was just Looney Tunes.

P.S. For extra lunacy, I never ONCE "defended" the US. I didn't say a word in defense of the country. All I ever said was that his extremist views were insanely biased and unfounded...and that, apparently, was enough to send him straight out of his mind. Are we sending criminals with mental illnesses up to Canada now, or something?

I honestly don't get how people can put an entire country in one basket and think they all are the same, it doesn't make any sense to me.

We aren't perfect, but neither is anyone else for that matter.

I've seen worse kicks. :)

But really Ben, I think your leader style here on PSXE has improved a lot lately. You're not as aggressive as (you seemed to be) before, you let things play out a little more without interfering and thus let things get a chance to die out by itself (something that often happens), and let others have their opinions even when they are in stark contrast to you own.
I like it.

You'll get no argument from me. I honestly don't know a single soul up here that thinks the way he does. And I was one of the Canadians that wanted to make it clear he's on his own.

As if the frigger would use his citizenship as a Canadian to somehow bolster his point of view... idiot.

Beamboom: Thank you, but bear in mind I think my more heavy-handed approach in earlier times was necessary to create and foster a community that can sort of police its own.

Now I believe it's reached that point, so I've taken a step back. Actually, the only reason I even knew about brighat's hateful anti-American post is because a user here brought it to my attention. :)
