Ben's Week In Review: June 2

E3 isn't far off now and after that, we should know everything we need to know about the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One...right?

It'll be fun to see Square Enix try to explain Versus XIII's absence

We got to see the completion percentages for four current Final Fantasy projects and Versus XIII wasn't included. That, of course, is because it doesn't actually exist. And if it does, it has obviously shifted to the new generation or it's completely different...maybe it's Final Fantasy XV now. There were rumors to that effect before. The really funny part about this whole thing is Square Enix's new business strategies moving forward. They said they don't want to keep people in the dark anymore. They said they believe that going years without providing any concrete information is "being dishonest."

Okay. So, when are we going to hear about their explanation concerning Versus XIII? You may notice that they've never actually given us an explanation; they've only given us vague updates without any details concerning actual development progress. If you consider their new stance on keeping gamers updated, how exactly can you provide a status progression update without Versus XIII? Answer- It does...not...exist. Either that, or it's so far off into the future that it doesn't matter right now.

Will all PS4 games supporting Remote Play really help the Vita?

I don't think there's any doubt that it'll help a little, but will this mandate significantly increase Vita sales? It was confirmed this past week that any game made for the PS4 - with the exception of those that require the PlayStation Eye - must also support Remote Play. That's the function that lets you put PS4 games on the Vita, although of course, there is some scaling back involved. My question with Remote Play has always been the same, though: Do people really want to keep playing a game on the Vita after they've stopped on the PS3? Or in this case, the PS4? You're sacrificing a lot of quality, certainly, and you're also sacrificing a whole lot in the way of screen size. I suppose it makes sense from a portable perspective but...

Look, I think the Vita really needs its own games to truly succeed. It needs its own AAA killer apps that make consumers go, "you know, I should really get that thing." The PSP carved out its own niche in the market and the Vita should, too, although I'm not exactly sure how. I just know that Remote Play isn't something I think about too often, nor will I consider it very often when I've got the PS4. Will you?

Personal gaming update

I finally completed my 100% play-through of Tomb Raider. It wasn't especially hard but it was pretty time-consuming, although I loved most every second of it. It's too bad that Square Enix had such out-of-whack sales expectations, because I'm worried that Crystal Dynamics won't make a follow-up. This was a prequel and a reboot, so we need that follow-up with the new Lara (who's easily the best Lara we've seen yet). I like Fuse but not enough for me to play it solo. I thought about going back to finish DmC: Devil May Cry because I never did, but I figure I'll just wait for The Last Of Us. I expect to see that soon, anyway.

I also hope to deliver a Remember Me review at some point this week. That game is a total crapshoot in my eyes; it could be horrid or it could be amazing...or it could be anything in between. I'd like to remain optimistic on this one, though. I really kind have to. :)

completely gave up on versus 13. i'll pay attention to it when it releases.

as for remote play, im not really sold. from what i know they cant play disc games with remote play. at least thats what i knew from the last time i tried. i dunno if they changed it. since i plan to buy disc copies of games whenever i can, remote play would be pretty useless for me.

for now im just trying to finish tomb raider 100%. waiting for last of us to release.

btw, from what im reading, the tales of symphonia colletion was confirmed. october launch in japan and sometime in 2014 in US. good news for me, i loved tales of graces. waiting for xillia to release. two more tales games is a very welcome addition to my game collection.

Versus XIII is something I just don't have any interest in right now. Once and if something concrete gets unveiled with serious promotional content will I hope for it more.

I'm happy with my Vita. I LOVE the cross-play feature for it with DOA5. That's been worth it for me in and of itself. I do look forward to doing the FF HD collection on it and also the next handheld GoW and something Infamous and Motorstorm. But yah, the remote play thing to me is just an aside.

PGU: I've been on and off working with Sonic 4 and Sonic Generations. Both are great for fun old school fast moving platforming. I like how Sonic 4 feels like a very faithful and high res version of the genesis games. I haven't been able to spare the time just yet for anything more engrossing. I just have so many projects going on.

maybe it'll come PS3 or 360 side sometime in the future. I haven't read into how intimate the game's tech is built around the Wii U's architecture so I don't know what to expect. Either way, I suspect at some point I'll get a Wii U (really having kids makes it a lot more compelling than it otherwise would be)so I'll probably get to the new Sonic some time. I'm really loving Sonic Generations though. I know having it 1080p 60fps on my PC helps a bit but it's still a really great Sonic game.

SE thinks they can say things like that and it will make people feel better, but a lack of Versus info at E3 (a 100% likelihood) will show that they don't practice what they preach. As if we needed THAT demonstrated to us anymore. Though I'm interested in the big (tiny) FF announcement they'll bring (Probably Agito Vita or another rhythm game).

I can't fathom how PS4 remote play will work, the controls on PSP remote play were laggy.

Ben you should really finish DmC, it won't take but a few more hours of your time and the ending is totally worth it to bring the whole project's brilliance into the fore.

I'm starting to warm up to RAGE, unfortunately it still seems to lack a soul. Bought Crysis 2, just waiting for it to arrive.

Rage doesn't have much by way of emotional attachment to any of it's characters so that soul-less feeling pretty much permeates the experience. But nonetheless it's got a lot of great things going for it by way of atmospheric immersion and some memorable moments. The game surprised me a number of times by the time it was over. Too bad there probably won't be another anytime soon.

Yeah S.enix has lots of explaining to do. If anything they making a fool of themselves is largely entertaining.

PGU: I finished the new dmc on dmd. It was pretty exhilarating and especially cool to go from nephilim to sos to dmd seamlessly and see my skills increase to the point that I found my experience with dmd slightly less bumpy than sos. I love the way they approached difficulty which kept track of all items and abilities across missions of varying difficulty.

Finally meaning to go out and buy bioshock today, I know, I know, this is sacrilege to have put it off for so long...

To me, Bioshock is going to be a classic in 10-20 years when the PS6 comes out, the PS3 outsold the PS2 and the New Super Nintendo is announced alongside the Sega Mercury.

History shall repeat itself. I know it.

I personally have no interest in Versus 13 anymore. For the time being that is. I hate being anxious for something I know nothing about. I mean the time between Uncjarted: Drakes Fortune and the announcement of Uncharted 2 was super ridiculous for me.

I think any thing will help the Vita right now. Im not sure what the deal is with Sonys handhelds. They are super popular but they just cant get past the competition. What is the competition right now besides the 3ds? Is that even competition anymore? Personally I dont care for the handhelds.

PGU: Same as always... Borderlands 2. Starting a new Gunzerker playthrough soon to keep me busy after The Last of Us. Cant wait for the last piece of DLC for Borderlands 2. I love the idea of the Vault Hunters of old and Tiny Tina playing a D&D - "Bunkers and Badasses" as they are calling it - game with our characters in the world. Very original and cool. And it looks like a lot of fun. Apparently its as big as all 3 dlc pieces they have released so far! Awesome so it should add a lot more play time!

I'm pretty close to just writing off Final Fantasy forever. I loathe everything related to XIII, have no interested in Versus, and no longer do MMOs (so there goes XIV). The only thing that I had any intention of getting was the XHD collection, but since that may or may not hit until after I have a PS4, I may not even get that. SE can still publish great games, but I can easily see a time when I'll avoid anything with their name on it as a developer.

I really hope Sony ends up not mandating Vita support for each and every PS4 game. I'm pretty anti-handheld and would really rather development time not be wasted on that. Plus, as Ben says, even people who like the Vita may not be interested in lessening their PS4 experience with Vita ports. So, it's seems likely that this could end up pleasing very few people.

PGU - finally gave up on Tropico. Tried Divine Divinity, but it just didn't age very well. So I ended up with CitiesXL. Haven't played very much of it yet, but so far, I'm enjoying it. It let's me sate my SimCity needs without having to suffer through the Always On crap.

I don't give a hoot about Final Fantasy.
Having tried Remote Play of my ps3, I can certainly recommend it for ps4, but not for every type of game. There is a slight lag, which can hinder precision control. It worked well for indie games where there's less info travelling via WiFi. Sony may very likely optimize Remote Play for ps4 though.
Picture shitting yourself playing Dark Souls 2 on ps4, then continuing your game literally shitting yourself with your Vita in the loo.

PGU: Playing another brilliant game from ps plus Instant Game Collection here in the UK, Demons Souls. Next it's Kingdom of Amalur.

cant reveal everything, otherwise they will have nothing to show of for the rest of the years events.
ill be surprised if E3 gives us specific dates and pricing, we might get rough estimations but not exact info.
bit too early to be talking about those things.

just because $E wont talk about versus 13 does not mean it does not exist.
R* will not talk about agent, does that mean it does not exist?
how about the last guardian?
how about mirrors edge 2?
ok stretching a bit on that one since its never been announced, but still all the leaks and stories about it and EA still refuse to comment on it.
how long did we go through $ony constantly refuse to talk about GT5, before they finally opened the flood gates?
how long did we go through R* refusing to talk about LA Noire?
make it sound like this is the first time a games been announced, and thats it for years on end.
its not, not even close!

remote play wont help much, unless $ony manages to do some magic with the gaikai servers and lets you play your ps4 games on the vita over a mobile connection.
thats never going to happen, so eh.
its nice to see $ony actually growing some f*cking balls though, one thing that has really hurt them this gen.
they rack their nuts creating these awesome features, than destroy them by not forcing devs to use them.
devs have enough on their plate, if you leave a feature up to them of course there not going to use it!
how many games these days would not have trophies if $ony did not make them mandatory?

i really hope crystal dynamics will do another TR, and they really seem to love the franchise, and the reboot has done extremely well both critically and financially so id be shocked if they dont.
it just makes me sad that they half a$$ed the reboot.
the whole point of the reboot was to change the series, move it away from the typical michael bay hollywood action film, but it really did not do that.
the first half hour or so was f*cking brilliant, the opening cut scene waking up in a dark ritualistic taboo tomb, and being chased was just so brilliant.
every time lara fell and screamed out in pain you felt it yourself.
then she kills her first victim, and oh joy im playing tomb raider underworld all over again!
so frustrating how many games are doing this lately, they come up with some brilliant ideas but chicken away from bringing them to their full potential.
exactly why as much as i loved the game, i really am not interested in a sequel, because were going to be back to square 1 where we were all those years ago back on the terrible tomb raider movies.
the whole point of the reboot was to reset the franchise, but it hasent its just continued it like a sequel rather than a reboot.
so what was the point?

im really really excited for remember me, its just so typically french!
different, unique, quirky and colorful.
the world at least, the combat, well, im not too confident with.
im putting this in the skyrim territory, a beautiful world, a brilliant atmosphere, but as a game pretty boring and basic.
actually, bioshock infinite would probably be a better comparison.
just goes to show how important the foundations are, pretty buildings are pretty useless if the games not fun to play, and characters interesting and engaging.
and thats exactly the problem, its got a really interesting concept of memory loss and gaining that back, but how many games have done that?
and how many have truly brought the concept its justice?
exactly.

just tried the demo for the last of us this morning, and all i gotta say IS THAT ALL!?
we waited FOUR freaking months for that!?
climb this wall, shimmy across this scaffolding, boost tess up a ledge so she can pull you up, hide from a clicker, than a end showdown with a few enemies and thats it your done.
worlds shortest demo!
they should of included the E3 demo that way you get a taste of both sides, both fighting the infected and humans, and at least that would extend the time a little.
pretty disappointing having to wait 4 freaking months, 2 weeks before the demo releases, just for a 15 minute demo!

been jumping back and forward from fuse and GTA san andreas the past week.
fuse is exactly what i expected, great fun with friends, and ok by yourself but the AI really lets the creativity of the game down.
the whole point of the game is combining the teams weapons to creatively take enemies down, but the AI is too stupid to do that.
it just feels like they could of done so much more with it if they were given a bit more time, and maybe even lift the current gen technical restrictions.
but why is it that every single game EA publishes feels rushed and unfinished?
hmmmmmm, wonder why!

san andreas was pure perfection!
kept everything that made vice city so great, and added oh my god so much more crap!
yea most of it, the food, the gym, the character stats, the girlfriend, are all pretty pointless but strangely you find yourself obsessed in participating in them anyway.
then you have the car and weapon customization, the gang wars, base jumping, robbing army air bases, stealing private planes from the air port, ahhhhhhh this is exactly what GTAV needs to be!
a HD version of san andreas, that would be the perfect game!
but alas it wont be, its just going to be IV on steroids.
:(

i think the remote play will increase vita sales... I mean especially if it can be accessed via wifi... sure if im at home Id choose to play on the ps4 over the vita... but lets say Im at work.... Ive got a 1 hour lunch break... Im not gonna lug my ps4 to work.. I can pop out the vita use my jobs free wifi contact my ps4 at home and get some game time in for an hour.. I already play my psp at work during lunch.. now Ill be able to make some more progress on a ps4 game if i have a vita? Im 100% ok with that.

I am still hopeful for FFVSXIII. That's all I can say.

Everybody needs to stop worrying about PS4 and Vita compatibility being mandatory. It's not that big of a deal and won't task the devs. All it does is stream the PS4 game with video, sound and controls. The PS4 has a dedicated video encoder that will stream the game to the Vita. The PS4 does all the work and the Vita just displays it. There will be no degradation.

This is going to be a lot bigger than a lot of you realize. Mark my words there are a lot of uses for Remote Play and the Vita. It's going to work great because the PS4 will have like a mini Gaikai hot spot right in your living room for the Vita. It will more than likely be available over WIFI as well. I am so excited for this tech I can barely contain myself! It's going to be amazing buying the PS4 and then experimenting!

PGU: Finishing up Guacamelee! Really great and challenging game. The platforming is for advanced players! Hopefully they come out with a sequel.

On another note I am playing the hell out of Defiance. I am almost level 600. The game is so fun and addicting! Also, the show has been getting a lot better.

Highly anticipating The Last of Us! I have it preordered on the PSN. It's going to be a fantastic ride. I have resisted playing the demo in GoWA. 6/14 cannot come fast enough!

It's a no brainer for you bigrailer19! It's got a lot of Borderlands in it. The gun play and gun loot are fantastic. I am always modding my guns. There is always something to do. You could play a month without doing the main missions before you get bored. I finally bought my first car, a Charger the other day. The contracts, COOP missions, Shadow Wars and Arkfalls are fun as well. If you want competitive MP it has that too. There is an option to switch between competitive MP and casual. On casual everybody is on the same team killing Hell Bugs and the like. I am working to get to San Francisco since it's closed off by this BEHEMOTH MACHINE!! They are supporting it very well too.

I still am excited for Versus 13 to come out. I mean I want the game that it is supposed to be and will buy the crap out of it if it ever sees the light of day.

I'm just hoping it isn't on the PS4, if it is multi generation thats cool, but I am just really worried its going to be PS4 exclusive.

Its not that I don't want a PS4 eventually I just can't afford one right now and if Versus 13 was say a launch title for it this fall....well my heart would be broken :P

The whole Versus XIII not existing is annoying and ignorant. Sure, it doesn't exist even though there are loads of proof hat it does. Even worse is the whole lie about it ecoming XV. Nomura doesn't want it to be a mainline title because it doesn't hold the norm for what's needed for a regular FF. Also, why would it be announced as the new FF for next gen when they said that they have a NEW Final Fantasy? Versus is from from new, common senze guys...

I also think gameplay, concepts and maybe even characters from the Versus XIII project are going to be incorporated in to FF XV. Seems the most likely way for Square to salvage some of their work, please some fans who really like what they've seen/heard so far, and get away from the god forsaken "XIII" era for this series.
