Ben's Week In Review: June 16

Well, it was the week that saw PlayStation become the industry's darling and the Xbox One become the industry's punch line. In all honesty, I never would've expected it.

It's hard not to like the PS4

The PlayStation 4 is one of the hottest items out there. And why? Sony seems to have made all the right moves and choices, while Microsoft made all the wrong ones. The list of positives is pretty comprehensive: Sony's console will cost $100 less than the new Xbox, the PS4 will have no DRM and no required Internet connection, that 8GB of GDDR5 RAM is a developer's dream, and that 500GB hard drive can be upgraded.

The result of all this appreciated news- raised internal sales projections, a GameStop Facebook fan vote that is ridiculously lopsided, and immediate pre-order interest. It has been a very busy and productive week for Sony and the PlayStation brand and it'll be interesting to see how Microsoft responds. Maybe they don't care, though. Maybe they'll just count on the casuals to flock to the Xbox because it's all they know. And sadly, that's very possible.

Can we assume that The Last Guardian is a PS4 exclusive now?

When people start talking about the upcoming exclusives for the PS4, I'm starting to automatically think of The Last Guardian. I was a little worried when Sony initially said it was "on hiatus" but apparently, it's still in development. Well, whatever, it's obviously a long ways off. And I've had the sneaking suspicion that somewhere along the way, the developers were told to switch their efforts to the PS4. I don't think Sony wanted to release such a high-profile exclusive IP on the PS3 in 2014. I think they want to make that generational transition ASAP, and I believe The Last Guardian is too important to leave behind. Besides, there's something else to consider:

It has always been said in development circles that Fumito Ueda isn't an easy man to work for. His ambition is often extremely high...sometimes too high. What if the PS3 simply couldn't handle that vision? What if it just made more sense to transfer it to the PS4? More powerful new hardware could give Ueda and Co. precisely what they want, and they wouldn't have to make any sacrifices. At this point, it just seems inevitable that one of the most anticipated exclusives of the generation will become one of the most anticipated exclusives of the next generation.

Personal gaming update

I'm doing everything I can to savor The Last Of Us. The problem is that the game is so good, it's extremely difficult to stop playing. Besides, with E3 over, I've got a little extra time, so all I really want to do is finish. However, I have little interest in any title until Grand Theft Auto V in mid-September, so I've got all sorts of time to savor! Then I really might embrace a blast from the past; Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy Tactics, or Castlevania: Symphony of the Night perhaps. Three of my favorite games of all time and I haven't revisited any of them for a couple years. That just feels wrong somehow. ;) What games do you typically return to?

I'll also be playing more of Time and Eternity, so look for that review at some point. I think JRPG fans will enjoy it, but I can't say any more until I get farther along. Lastly, just in case Sony doesn't have enough PS4s to send to the press, I've pre-ordered mine. I may consider trading in my Xbox 360 and all the games, too. I'll be putting the PS4 in its place in the entertainment center, and I really can't see myself going back to play any 360 games. I've never felt the urge to go back and play any title from either of the Xbox generations. So maybe it should go bye-bye.

I've never seen anything like the craziness for the PS4 pre-orders. Even people who never had a Playstation are pre-ordering one.

I am loving the Last of Us. It's so good.

I've been told by someone who imported TokitoTowa that it's really bad.

Nice summation Ben! The links are much appreciated.

The unveiling of the PS4 couldn't have gone better. It was a true joy to behold.

I agree that the Last Guardian is now a PS4 exclusive. It must be a really special game to be kept under raps so long. I can wait though. Perfection takes time.

PGU:
What can I say, I am lucky enough to own The Last of Us. One of the best games this gen. I cannot put into words how much fun I am having with this game. It's truly special. It's really Naughty Dogs best game so far. What will they do with the PS4? Uncharted 4? It's hard to believe that there will be even a better game than The Last of Us on the PS4. We'll see I guess! I cannot wait to read what will come next from them.

I'm looking forward to the Time and Eternity review Ben, even if it isn't a super awesome title stuff like that just appeals to me for other reasons like being ensconced in what is essentially a playable Anime. Catherine was 100% anime greatness like that.

I've interrupted my shooting in Crysis 2 to play the wonderful mess that is Deadly Premonition: Director's cut. Despite the issues it is one of the most unique and bizarre gaming experiences of all time. I've left some impression in quick analysis here:
http://www.onlysp.com/the-cult-gamer-returns-with-a-deadly-premonition/

I'm also taking this time before the PS4 to rifle through my library and sell the games I'm reasonably sure I will never play again. So far I've sold off RE6, Dragon Age II, The Saboteur, and someone is supposed to pay for Prototype 2 but they are taking forever.

I found out I made the Dean's list in my last semester which was totally cool and I'm trying to raise my profile as a writer. Also I'm trying to quit smoking because Minnesota is about to add another $1 tax per pack, wish me luck!

Congrats on the Dean's List! And whatever you do, find some way to stop sucking on those death sticks! Its crazy how the tobacco industry has found a way addict people to these things and pay for it in the process. In NEW YORK prices range from $11-$15 a pack. It has not deterred people from smoking.

I have so many games I know I won't play again but could never bring myself to sell. Where it how should I start. I'm running out of room and need to make space for PS4 games.

It really is amazing how lopsided this looming gen appears.

I'd like to play The Last of Us. I believe the hype and I know Naughty Dog is top talent. I just don't know when I can give it the time it deserves.

PGU: Lots of projects as usual gobbling up my gaming time. I haven't made any progress on Darksiders 2. I bought AC3 yesterday for PC for $14 because it was an impulsively good deal. Don't know when I can play it. hehe. I did load it up after installing 5 patches on top of each other (no joke). It looks real nice and it appears to take excellent advantage of multi-threaded CPUs. Oh, I did play some Tekken Revolution. I like it's stripped down nothing-but-the-fight approach. It's why I play these games. It has an arcad'ish feel. It is an example of always-online woes though. Two times in one day I was unable to play because it failed to validate the game on their server when re-entering the menu or loading the game up.... see that MS? See how annoying it is when networks don't operate as they should? Just imagine the chaos if something like PSN's security breach happened on that side of the fence. OUCH!
Anyhow, I got to meet Todd McFarlane. He autographed my Spawn picture I drew up.

I didn't preorder PS4 cause PS3 has the games I want to play until next year. I was hoping The Last Guardian to be a PS4 launch title to make me preorder it. There is no doubt that TLG will be release on PS4.

Now playing The Last Of Us. A must play and game of the year.

I don't want to spoil it for you, but haven't seen ANYTHING yet, especially in relation to the Bloater guys. There's one scene that has to be the most intense I've ever played or even experianced in an entertainment medium. I was so proud of myself when I made it; I took about 30 minutes of planning.

I don't know what pace you're playing at, but I've played 12 hours and I'm only 48% through. This game is HUGE. I even got lost at one point - had to backtrack and refind my bearings lol!

On one hand, an uber dominant console may be good for everyone. If the absolute unthinkable happens and Nintendo were to go third party, at least every gamer would have access to every game. On the other, having one company dictate the entire course of console gaming isn't a particularly good thing.

I haven't finished yet, and I hold Uncharted 2 VERY dear, but I don't know man...this game needs to played. It's an experiance. Some of the scenes - and I'm talking about gameplay here - are SO intense, so emotionally engaging. It makes you think about things, about the characters and the world, even after you've turned your PS3 off and are trying to sleep. I struggled to last night.

Hell, I even got a cold and my first thought was "Oh god I'm infected" LOL. Game has infected my mind alright though.

one thing that really worries me with the ps4 is the inconsistency of the quality of the titles.
some games look really impressive, and others look like freaking ps3 games!
the one advantage of having X86 architecture was the simplicity of it, so we should of seen allot more consistency and speed on development.
but were not, were seeing exactly what we saw with the ps3.
some games look amazing, and others terrible.
knew $ony should of stuck with cell!
oh well, again, i wont say i told you so!

no, we can say its vaporware!
im sorry but the games been in development since at least 2005, and a few years ago they said we havent considered how the controls would work.
how can you go 4+ years of development without considering how the controls will work?
im sorry, but if there ever was a game that was vaporware its the last guardian!

anyone looking how to start a game need look no further than the last of us!
had me sobbing like a baby!
so calm walking around taking in the atmosphere, than BAM the carpets pulled right from under you!
wow, not only start with a bang, but a worldwide tremor as well!
its so beautiful the tension the clickers make you feel, i remember the subway level ND first used to show off the clickers, my butt turned like a rabbits nose i was so tense!
makes you so tense slowly creeping inch by inch hoping one wont sneak up behind you.
that highlights one thing i wish they would change though, its really hard to tell where a clicker is.
whether there behind you, or in the next room the volume of noise they give off is exactly the same!
quite a few times ive been caught from behind simply because i thought they did not know where i was, and because its the standard clicking sound no matter whether there alert or not, whether there 200 or 1m away from you, its really hard to tell where they are and what there doing unless there visible in listen mode.
has a perfect balance of characters too, elie the innocent optimist, joel the cynic, bill the crazy paranoid type.
love the music too, it just goes to show how much a good score adds to a game.
just would not be the same without it!

only bad things about the game are typical ND stereotypes.
probably a bit early to say this since im only about 10 hours through, but still the usual minimalist character development is really bugging me.
as joel says this is how its going to work, you dont ask about my past and i dont give a sh*t about yours.
how did joel know tess?
bill?
theres just no background story to lay the world in reality.
thats what made ME such a amazing series, everything felt intertwined and created for a reason.
not plucked out of a dumpster just for the sake of it!

allot of the upgrades feel like things you should have from the start.
it took me like 7 hours into the game to finally find a modifiable weapon, the pipe and blade.
why so long?
took me again like 7 hours before i could afford the use a shiv to escape a clickers grab, something that should definitely come as standard at the start of the game!
it takes SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO long to build up enough points to buy these abilities, and making that worse so many of them feel like things you should start off with.
even the weapon parts are really frustrating, there is SO many parts throughout the game you find them left, right and center, but there useless unless you have the right tool level and that again takes FOREVER to build!
so many times ive reached a bench and havent been able to upgrade anything because my tool level is too low.
here you go heres a million dollars go have fun!
oh but you have to buy things in this category.
but theres nothing i want in this category.
tough!
real point full!
hate it how so many games do that these days, give you so much currency to upgrade things, but either give you nothing worth the cost, or impose other unnecessary restrictions.

then theres the bugs, oh my god the bugs!
lost like 6 hours of progress thanks to the auto save glitch, that REALLY PISSED me off!
and to make things worse, where i restarted i restarted with 0 survival points, but where i left off the night before i had 40!
there hard enough to save up as it is, and now i just lost 40 of them!?
FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!
as if having to replay 6 hours of the game was not bad enough.
theres allot of glitches in ellies AI as well.
so many times ive seen her running into walls or running in circles.
it was funny the first time i saw one of bills traps, i crawled under and joel tells ellie to watch out for the trap.
she says ok than runs straight through it blowing both of us up!
thanks for that!

highlights whats ruining this generation, everything just feels rushed and poorly put together which is a shame because at its core the last of us truly is gold!
such a shame $ony had to hire the best chefs in the world, then say ok i know this recipe takes 6 hours to make but you only have 2.
really spoiled it!
and thats after the massive delay, id hate to see what it would be like if it launched as originally intended!
just once id like to see perfection, but it looks like that will never happen.
you always have to have something spoiling something.
:(

All kidding aside, I really hope that the Last Guardian comes to fruition. Shadow of the Colossus is, without any hesitation or doubt, my most favorite video game of all time. The game is BEYOND special. Every second spent in that world is a joy. Moments like getting the 13th Colossus to come down to ground level, riding alongside on Agro, standing up and jumping onto its wings right before it takes off into the air are still the best I've ever had with a controller in my hand. And that is REAL TIME. Not this scripted event crap that everyone, including Naughty Dog, loves to do this gen. And people say, that it is the the 'future' or the 'pinnacle' of gaming? No, it's a big damn step backwards.

All the gameplay is real-time - no offense mate, but have you actually played the game yet? When you get into combat situations, they are MASSIVE, massive sprawling areas. You have so many options depending on what kind of survivour you are. Don't fancy your chances of getting by unnoticed? Take a guy hostage, take a few out, knock him round the head and hole up in a corner. Running out of ammo? Run away, transition back into stealth, try and grab some ammo.

Didn't get much ammo coming into it? Stealth your way through, throwing bricks to distract them away from your route, or using melee weapons to take them out.

The A.I is so dynamic and unpredictable, every battle feels and actually turns out different everytime. So I have NO IDEA what you're talking about when you say it's scripted. Only bad thing about the A.I is that they will amost never notice Ellie or whoever, even if they run infront of them - which I don't mind.

You won't get one complaint from me. It's a great game. But quit picking a fight and talking down to people when they clearly made no reference to what you are jumping on them about. Seriously, calm yourself, read, and most important, comprehend.

And as far as the AI being 'unpredictable'. patently untrue. I ran into an autosaving bug when I first started the game on Thursday and I had to go back and repeat about an hour and a half of it. The enemies were in the same exact place, at the same exact time, walking the same exact routes. In fact, they will repeat the same route with very little deviation if you sit back and watch. And the companion AI being 'invisible' is just silly. If that were any other game it would have been crucified, but since it's Naughty Dog and since it's got a little girl companion in it, ala Walking Dead and Bioshock Infinite, it gets a pass. ND should have figured a way to make the companion AI more a part of the actual gameplay experience since the ENTIRE narrative is centered around it. But ND played it safe and made the gameplay easily digestible, hence, invisible AI that requires little management.

So you want to know why up above I said it was a 'great game' instead of the 'greatest game'. That's why. And FYI, I've completed the game, as well.

"But quit picking a fight and talking down to people when they clearly made no reference to what you are jumping on them about". I'm taking you down man, the moment you said "It's a big damn step backwards", lol. But seriously, the game just came out, it is mentioned in the article, the comment you replied to also mentions it - it's common sense to assume you were talking about TLOU. Fair enough if you weren't, if it was in reference to the Uncharted's, well, that's for another day lol.

I also ran into the bug, and I was the first to call out ND for it - you simply don't release a game like that. I should show you the messages I sent to my friend...I didn't have pleasant things to say, that's for damn sure! But yeah, if ND make a game like this, I have a natural urge to tell everyone on the internet to GET THE GAME RIGHT NOW!

As for the A.I, I'm talking about how they react to you - THAT changes everytime. Ofcourse they will show up in the same places and take the same-ish routes (though not exactly); how annoying would it be if they didn't? It's a design thing; you need to let the player learn their routes and be able to strategise. Try going into battles with different mindsets, and you'll see how truly dynamic it is. It's not perfect, but ofcourse it won't be, being this ambitious.

But the whole 'Ellie being invisible' can be a definite immersion-breaker, that I agree with. Not even sure if I wanted the other soloution, e.g she will break your stealth, so I just let that slide whenever I see it. I feel like the game has garnered enough respect from me to let me do that, if you know what I mean. However ND have definately involved her in the gameplay in other intresting ways, don't deny them that. She is massively unpredictable (slight spoiler)

Like when she tells you where guys are ("behind you Joel"), or throws bricks at someone to give you a little reprieve. And did you notice how Joel goes into that 'protect stance' when they occupy the same space in cover? That is an awesome touch. And other things she does in gameplay, when she just breaks out in a humming song, or open up the jokebook. She's a truly believable character.

nope.
a BBC reporter did a article referring to a secret game he was shown in 2005, than when this was announced he was asked if the last guardian was the secret game he was showed and he said yes it is.
so its been in development since at least 2005.
probably even more than that.

the AI is not half as good as ND would have you believe.
they say if the AI sees you with a gun they will run back into cover.
load of sh*t, so many times ive jumped out of cover and aimed at a enemy with my shotgun and he charges me with a 4x4 plank of wood!
plank of wood vs shotgun, hmmmmmmm i wonder whos going to win!
only time the AI retreats is when theres only a few of them, they will retreat and try to loose your line of sight so they can flank you.
otherwise there pretty much your typical mindless goons, far too aggressive and needlessly putting themselves in the noose.
common sense, if i have a molotov cocktail in my hand it may not be a good idea to charge towards me.

noticed a new bug tonight too, a enemy got caught in a animation loop where he was throwing a molotov cocktail but never actually threw it, i was just sitting next to him watching him grab one out, throw it then it disappears, grabs one out, rinse and repeat.
finally took him out, than there was one enemy left.
so i charged him and smashed his skull in, than suddenly 4 more enemies magically poped in front of me and instantly i died.
great, now we have teleporting enemies too?

on the other side of the AI, one thing thats REALLY pissing me off is for some reason every single time i go to take cover elie has to take cover on the edge.
ALWAYS!
so when a enemy walks past cover, i go to rush to grab him and run into her and he runs around her and hits me.
why does she ALWAYS have to get in my f*cking way!
so many times shes thrown a bottle at a enemy, so ive rushed up to hit them to only have her crouching in front of them blocking me from attacking.
GET OUT OF THE GOD DAM WAY WOMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ellie is in no way "invisible." Somebody didn't play the game long enough, obviously. She gets a gun at one point and even hands you med kits.

She's a lot like Elizabeth in Bioshock. If people aren't complaining about her (and NOBODY did), then nobody should be complaining about Ellie.

And I HATE babysitting. I don't WANT to have to worry about what my partner is doing. Just stay out of my way and help if and when you can. That's precisely what all good AI should do, and precisely what Ellie does.

The complaint about enemies having scripted routes is also irrelevant, as all games have that to a certain extent. What matters is how they react, how they come at you, how they defend themselves. Few games, if any, feature more dynamic and intelligent enemies than TLoU.

of course it matters, just because every game does it does not excuse another to do it.
and ellie is invisible, along with all the friendly AI allot of the times.
even when enemies are alerted to your presence ive sat and watched enemies walk straight past ellie, bill, any friendly AI and continue searching for me.
ellies AI is really inconsistent too.
sometimes she will be constantly harping at me about oncoming enemies, and other times she sits right next to me and does not say boo as a enemy sneaks up on my and slices my head off.
listen modes the same, so many times ive searched for enemies and nothing comes up, you turn the corner and bam a enemies right there attacking me.
when it works the AI is pretty good, but thats exactly the problem it does not work very often!

That sucks. I remember when my old fatty did that as well. Have you tried maybe cleaning the lens? Has the fan turned on really loud?

Didn't Sony said they want to release before the next Xbox? I'm thinking October... But I could be completely wrong and they might release a week apart. Who knows.

ps4 wont be releasing in october, if it was they would of announced it at E3.
funny how the xbox one has been revealed for not even a month now and we have a launch month for that, but not the ps4 which was announced 4 months ago!

50 bucks says ps4 will release 21/11/13.
1 EB had the ps4 version of ACIV and watch dogs set as 21/11/13 same date as the current gen version for watch dogs.
2 a friend of mine sent ubisoft and EB a email asking if this date was correct and they both confirmed its correct.
then the release date mysteriously changed back to TBC 2013 on EBs website.
watch dogs has always been the pioneer for next gen, it was the first next gen game showed off.
so it just seems a bit coincidental that it also happened to be the first game to have a date listed for it.
i hope its not, its far too late for next gen systems to release, but everythings pointing to that for now.

Anyone else feeling mentally and emotionally exhausted from all the information flooding in this week?

PGU: After hearing all the juicy info on the Witcher 3 I am determined to go back to the Witcher 2 and get to the end this time :)

After that I'm going to try and DECIMATE my backlog (it's no longer even funny) and top it off with maybe Ni No Kuni and (obviously) The Last Of Us. OH! and FFX/X-2 HD!

By that time I should hope I'm ready to take on the PS4!!

This really is an amazing time to be a gamer!!!

It was nuts when the crowd started chanting "Sony!" after the "no DRM" announcement. My highlight was the MGSV trailer. Yeah I know, it's multi plat, but it's still going to rock. Who knows maybe the PS4 version will run at 60fps. The news on versus 13 was shock. Gave me goosebumps at first. If it officially goes mutil plat and doesn't have any thing even close to turnbased then I hope to see riots. In the mean time we can't confirm anything just from that short trailer so I'm optimistic.

I can't believe Microsoft let this happen to them. Unless they are planning on making some changes, they must really be banking on the casual market.

And The Last of Us is so nice. Worth every penny. It's like a rated R version of Uncharted with somehow even better graphics. The acting is superb and unheard of for the post apocalyptic theme that other games and movies give us.

And might I add I can't wait to add Kill Zone Mercenary and Flower to the vita!

happy gaming to all those fathers out there!

PGU: Pre-order Grand Theft Auto V, stuck in the early part of both seasons in NBA 2K and NHL 13. And I got The Last of Us and that game is amazing.

Been playing The Last of Us whenever possible. It's an awesome game! I've always thought that UC2 was the best game this generation but The Last of Us looks like it's going to take over that position for me.
