Ben's Week In Review: July 28

During the summer lull, make sure to check the PlayStation Store for hidden gems you may have missed. :)

Availability is key for the PlayStation 4

The headlines for Sony's new console remain mostly positive. A recent poll shows the PS4 might be almost 50% more popular than the Xbox One, Sony continues to show it's support of indie developers, and there's more good news from a hardware and design standpoint. However, all of that means nothing if Sony can't put enough units on store shelves come launch day. That's the concerning part because they've had extreme difficulty doing that in each of the past PlayStation generations. Of course, this new system is much easier and cheaper to produce so Sony shouldn't have as much trouble.

And yet, analysts are thinking we'll see more Xbox Ones available this holiday season, and that wouldn't surprise anyone. Some make snippy remarks like, "Yeah, that's because the XBone won't sell well." In this country, however, we know that isn't true. No matter what publicity edge Sony may hold going into this console face-off, it won't mean a thing unless they can at least keep up with pre-order demand. The good news is that Amazon has been resupplied in some capacity, so Sony is definitely responding to that demand early. Let's hope it continues.

I hope everyone was listening to the former Eidos Montreal boss

We've all assumed that Square Enix had internal troubles. We had ample evidence to believe that, of course, but outside of the atrocious - and very public - financial results, we've never really heard much in the way of outside comments. Those finally came when former Eidos Montreal founder Stephane D'Astous basically said Square Enix was a mess. "Lack of leadership, lack of courage, and the lack of communication" were painfully evident. I hope everyone understands that in the world of corporate speak, those are extremely bold and even harsh claims. It essentially says Square Enix has no idea what they're doing on any front. This explains a lot, doesn't it? It's interesting because the downward spiral appears to be a result of losing all touch with their hard-earned fans.

For instance, Tetsuya Nomura honestly believes the things he says will be well received by those long-time fans. So when he uses terms like "quick action" in regards to Final Fantasy XV and explains why it has to be "more dynamic," he's expecting applause. He really thinks this is what the fans want. He's not saying, "Yeah, we're going for a new audience." Square Enix has never said that (although they do want to appeal to a wider audience). No, when they make such statements, they're making them with the long-time Final Fantasy followers in mind.

And that's just sad.

Personal gaming update

I avoided finishing The Last Of Us for as long as I possibly could, but it's done. It's just way too good to ignore for long, but I did manage to make it last nearly 20 hours. Now, I'm looking forward to Splinter Cell: Blacklist, which should hopefully be one of the better games of the year. So long as it's a return to true stealth form, I'll be happy. And believe it or not, in only about seven weeks, Grand Theft Auto V will be here. That just seems incomprehensible to me, but that's how time goes...

Oh, and some might be very interested in Saints Row IV, which is due out in late August; it's wacky over-the-top craziness, which is precisely what some people want. And again, I have to repeat- during these relatively bare summer months, don't forget about the PSN! :)

It's pretty sad that you could scoop any fan of Squaresoft off the street, put them in charge of Square Enix and the whole mess would be fixed. They really think their problem is not enough full-on action.

I've got a birthday this week, I'm getting Metro: Last Light. I have very little idea what I'm going into, something about atmospheric post apocalypse tunnels in Russia?

I'm playing Metro Last Light right now. It's good you don't know much about it because discovery will make it seem that much better.

From your comments about TLOU it sounds like like you got Hyped-out.

I read somewhere that basically said that when, in your case, you went into a blackout from anything TLOU related, you pretty much overhyped your own self and therefore when the game came out your expectations were too high that you ended up disliking the game. It also said that the more you know about a game, the more likely it is that you will love it. So you should never, ever go into a total black out, World. You should watch all trailers and such to avoid this in the future.

I must admit, I can't possibly begin to understand how you didn't like TLOU. It's just not logical.

I do love atmospheric games and especially exploration. I hope there's a flashlight though, that's something that is often sorely needed in games like Bioshock and Rage and stuff.

Sounds like a good time to me.

I didnt see that movie yet, but the one im curious about is The Wolverine. I loved how the commercials say (unquoted btw) fans rejoice and so on. But the script sounds terrible and unworthy of Wolverines (the comic character) greatness.

I was starting to love these super hero movies, they were finally getting them righy then Iron Man 3 ruined my excitement and ultimately has me hesitant once again.

My newspaper didn't like Wolverine, gave it 2 stars, I wonder if the superhero thing isn't going to trend down henceforth. It's like they hardly ever give the characters respect. Cept for Judge Dredd, he finally got some respect. The jury is out on Robocop, there are so many changes that it will need to interpret them properly as a social commentary for it all to work.

Personally I'd like a Spawn reboot but with Seth MacFarlane holding creative control.

Your right, the respect is going out the window. AGAIN.

Iron Man was so terribly disrespecred in Iron Man 3, in fact the Marvel universe was. It was not a good tribute to either. Some of my friends have come to grips with what they did but I havnt.

I heard Dredd was awesome. Havnt seen it yet. And honestly the TV show Shield looks promising. It could be epic if they get some camios in there once in awhile.

Im not a huge DC fan but Superman - Man of Steel - turned out really good to. Unfortunately WB is trying to cash in like Marvel and that could be doom for Superman, Batman and any Justice League movie.

I think MS needs to get their price down to be a viable threat to Sony. Americans are also largely cheap and in debt. Sony having the 100 dollars less advantage is a big thing and I think it positions Sony very nicely against the competition.

While TLoU's gritty and brutal vibe I feel from it is a turn off, I would like to try it out at some point.

PGU: I'm getting excited for DOA5 Ultimate. Though, I really do miss Itagaki and co. on the franchise. That is, I see a lot of recycled assets from Team Ninja's Ninja Gaiden being dropped into the mix. Something I don't think Itagaki would've wanted. When Itagaki remastered DOA2 he went a lot further than snagging assets from other games to drop in. Really, I remember him stating that DOA and NG used their own engines to power his games. As each game required a different stream of resources. Anyway, I'm still excited and all. I love the fighting franchise. I just still feel the woes of a fragmented Team Ninja.

They look great on Xbox 360, too. What with the added anti-aliasing afforded by 360's emulation. It also helps with it running via HDMI out. DOA2 really does look spectacular on it, even on an HDTV.

Sensei Temjin, I was surprised by how much i am enjoying TLOU. People go in expecting a survival horror like RE and DS, and while they are undeniable sections like that a bit later in the game, it very much is game for ninjas. You will enjoy it, my guarantee. The game is a natural evolution of the Uncharted series. The change of emphasis is on strategic, sometimes subtle, but always brutal and clever gameplay. One of my favorites of this generation, IF NOT THE FAVORITE!

Increasingly sounding like an old man on his porch ranting about his changing neighborhood. "Ain't like it used to be..."

I've played nearly every FF over a span of some 19 years, and I am very excited for FFXV. Of course, it's the internet and you're naturally a far more superior and important fan of the series than I am, but I'm pretty sure I am not an anomaly in my anticipation for the title. Could you stop projecting your own blatantly cynical bias of the game as a representation of all longtime fans of the series? Believe me, your opinion is not shared by everyone. I said something pretty similar to what you're saying in another article. I don't get why every week there's an article about FF in that light. I'm an old time fan too, since FFVI, I actually liked FFXIII and XIII-2 and I'm highly anticipating FFXV, so at least you're not alone on this boat.

The one thing I always liked about this site was the lack of negativity and the great community, But I've actually stopped coming here everyday like I used to, because of these articles.

I just don't get how a franchise that has given us so much can now be so hated, just because of two games a lot of people didn't like.

I canĀ“t speak for Siris, but as for me, I know this isn't an article, hence why I didn't address you directly in my comment, It's your opinion and I respect it, even if I disagree with it. There WAS an article just yesterday, the one you linked in these editorial, in the same tone and light that Siris said.

It's really starting to irk me the attitude you have when you post in the comments Ben. You criticize SE and FF for things you don't like, so you post opinions on how you don't like those things, but when someone has a problem with things you or other contributors to the site do, then we're not supposed to express our opinions?

This is your site more than It is any of us, but you're OK with losing long time members of the site because they don't agree with you?

I think there's plenty of people here who disagree that continue to be members in good standing.

If someone sort of pulls the ol' "I'm leaving because you're a meanie" trick, I'd be saying "don't let the door hit you on the ass" too.

And good for Ben for sticking to his guns. It's not like he's disciplining people with bans just because they disagree with him.

What do you want him to do?

"Oh... ok, you're right. I guess FF isn't as bad as I think it's becoming".

That'd be lame, and I'd lose respect for him if he backed down without a good reason to change his opinion.

Lastly... and I think this is -really- important... if you hate the chatter about FF, why read those articles? I don't understand why you would read content knowing full well what it's going to say and then get mad about it. "Eat the meat and spit out the bones" and all that.

I almost never read anything about GTA because I hate the series. I don't go on and blast Ben for liking it or looking forward to it. That would be the exact same scenario, only the polarization is swapped. But the same concept applies.

No, as I said I respect Ben's opinion, but his opinion is not everyone's and as one that does not share his opinion, I would like to NOT see it embedded in every article about SE or FF in the site, since It's a negative opinion. How many times have gamers been criticized for judging things before they come out? Saying immature things like "Xbox One is gonna suck" or "The next GTA is gonna be awesome!" without even having the item in one's possession?

I'll say it again, I don't want everyone to think like me and I don't judge what people post in the comments but in the articles I expect a level of positiveness about most things. The FF articles are the first click on the site I do, and there's always a line in there about "lost all hope" and "error in their ways" and as Siris said, It makes my anticipation for games like FFXV and LR go down. I come to this site for the exact opposite of that, to share my love of gaming with a community I've come to enjoy and respect.

Oh and I don't think Siris comment was a trick or whining, It's the reality for some of the members of this site. We used to enjoy this site before, now we don't, and what these comments are is nothing more than we trying to get our old site and community back, you know, the one that came together for liking games, not hating on them.

EDIT: One last thing. Your point about the GTA series is a great one, and is exactly my point about FF and the site. If they have a negative opinion on that, why insert it into the articles? why not just give the news and leave it at that, and then let people battle it out in the comments?

I like the opinions, though. I find them entertaining, whether I agree or not. And if you don't agree, that's why I say the "eat the meat and spit out the bones". In other words, the news is still there. If you just want the news and hate the opinion, I'm sort of of the mindset that you do the above quote... take the news and let the opinion slide off.

And I know you respect ben's opinion. I meant to direct that comment at folks like Siris. sry.

The reason I say they get prematurely pissy and threaten to leave as an empty threat is because of examples in the last actual FF article from yesterday where he jumps to conclusions thinking Ben is talking about turn-based. This is why I wouldn't bend a knee to that kind of manipulative behavior.

Specifically, he said, "Anything not turn-based = attention deficit fueled twitch gaming?"

But that wasn't the conclusion at all, you know? It's like some of these people are actively looking to be insulted or hurt or whatever. They just assume the worst, and I think there's more evidence in their head than what's actually on this site.

That's more what I'm getting at.

It's absolutely no different than most all articles posted. No different at all. In fact, just about all opinion I add to any articles is largely positive, and there are questions designed specifically to generate discussion.

It isn't my fault that everyone believes the Final Fantasy stereotype that I only care about that. It isn't my fault they don't seem to read anything else. I know the truth of the matter, and the belief that there's any sort of extra emphasis on FF here is ludicrous. In fact, because of that ridiculous idea, I keep all FF news to a bare minimum. Other sites have WAY more headlines based on FF since FFXV was revealed.

But of course, the instant I post one, certain people start clamoring for me to be quiet. Honestly, it's just too stupid to talk about so I'm sorry if it annoys me. No, wait, actually I'm not.

Well its been all Borderlands 2 again. Tiny Tinas dlc is so awesome and Ive started a second character finally. I gave my Siren a break. Playing the Gunzerkernow and im pretty much sold. Because I can Gunzerk the whole game almost. Unless the action slows down.

Anyways this game is just too good. Ive never, Ever played a game that I can just keep going back to. Its crazy.

The Last of Us also took me around 20 hours. I think 22 total. That game was just brilliant. Recently Ive heard people talk about it needing platforming. For a game like this, that seems absolutely strange. Its a horizontal experience, nothing vertical. Its a straight forward, story driven experience.

I thought a little realistic platforming would have helped, nothing impossible like swinging from fingertips like Uncharted but when the world is falling apart you usually need to do a little climbing and jumping to get through it imo.

I'm playing as Zero in BL2, love the different helmets for him. I almost picked the chick but wasn't sure what to make of her class, when all else fails I go Ninja.

Ninja guy is always a good choice. You made a good decision on not choosing Maya if you're mainly playing SP. Shes a healer and relies heavily on allies support. She really plays a support role. Dont get me wrong shes a great character and has arguably the best ability (levatate and paralyze enemies). But her cataclysm skill tree doesnt beef her up like the Gunzerkers skills do for him. It mainly focuses on her elemental abilities. Which only helps so much, doesnt make her a power house.

If you don't like MMO's you won't like FFXIV, plain and simple.

It does feel like an FF, though. I find the battles too fast for my tastes, but it's still within my personal range of acceptability.

I could accept this type of gameplay style (again maybe a little slower) in future FF's. It has potential for battle depth, and although it's not turn-based in the sense of an ATB, it is in the sense that all actions require casting timers and refresh rates.

I'll be getting it because I like the Beta. It has the lore of an FF, and has a traditional RPG feel to the battle system and quests/stories.

I also like the fact that I don't need a complex community to participate thanks to Duty Finder and the ease of playing solo.

Yeah. Nothing special story-wise, but fun and pleasant.

I think the most baffling thing about SE, without bringing my FF beefs into it, is the fact that they've still released some really well done titles that sold well by... like... everyone else's standards, but they missed internal targets (and therefore funding lines).

Like really... outside FF, they are the most unsuccessful successful company I've ever seen. It's just straight up strange. It's like they legit thought they would make CoD sales with a good enough game.

i can'nt really comment on what S-E is doing to FF, but from an
outsider's point of vieiw can see that S-E is a train wreck.

pgu: playing a game that i'd thought i would'nt enjoy playing, The Sims 3

PGU: I have a group of about 6 or 7 buddies that are all into TLOU huge. That's an accomplishment for us since we rarely all like the same games. So I've been playing a lot of TLOU multiplayer, and I actually really enjoy it!

In real life, my wife is pregnant again and due around Christmas holidays. My last name is Howlett, so I've been thinking... if it's a boy... maybe I should name him "James"... A Canadian named James Howlett? X-Men fans know what I'm getting at.

...Awesome.

For a nickname, I'd totally call him "bub".

Congrats!

Oh, and go with the name. How awesome would it be if it became his alter ego later! ;)

Edit: Of course only if its a boy!

I'm gonna get FFXV when it comes out, but I'm not that excited, the wait is too damn long. I did enjoy XIII and hated XIII-2, and I still wish SE the best, cause I'm not going to let a single game or 2 out of many great games they made to make me wish for their demise. I still wish them the best of luck.

PGU:
I finished The Last Of Us in hard mode with listen mode disabled, and all I can say is "The Experience is Epic". The brutality is just right, things you do to survive and protect the ones you care for is shown very well, and it really helps to emphasize the ending. Magnificent. And I'm glad I never encounter some AI issues, and I'm suprised when I grab somebody and used him as a human shield sometimes they shoot through him just to kill me, it's awesome and a nice touch, it just shows you the brutality of some men. The game is beautiful.
