Ben's Week In Review: August 18

Everyone ready for the PlayStation 4 launch date? We should have it on Tuesday. :)

Could Grand Theft Auto V have a similar "wow" factor to GTAIII?

As far as most are concerned, Grand Theft Auto didn't really begin until GTAIII exploded onto the scene back in 2001. That's when the franchise underwent a drastic overhaul and went from being a merely average top-down driving game to an epic, revolutionary, open-world extravaganza. To this day, many say the third entry is one of the very best video games of all time, and tons of gamers all over the world credit GTAIII with getting them interested in sandbox-style interactive entertainment. Remember, at around that time, nothing that size had really been conceived on a consoles; worlds of that scope were typically restricted to MMORPGs. It was just mind-boggling.

But everything we're seeing and hearing could indicate another revolution - or at least, an evolution - when GTAV comes out. The developers are making some bold statements and one can't help but be impressed. Look at the media we've accumulated thus far...I mean, this could end up being one of the defining moments in the industry's history: A significant step forward in open-world entertainment. Even the multiplayer looks potentially extraordinary. But maybe the days of massive revolution are in the past...maybe such leaps can no longer be expected.

Is anyone else a little concerned about that "big surprise" Kojima teased for MGSV?

On the one hand, it's really easy to get excited when Hideo Kojima says there will be something in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain that we've never seen before. It's Kojima. It's MGS. It has to be awesome. But if you listen carefully to Kojima over the past few years, you start to hear something similar to that which we've heard from Square Enix. He has called out the Japanese gaming industry for not stepping things up, for not adapting, and in general, for falling well behind the Western developers. He has stressed the importance of Japanese game makers maintaining their culture and style, but MGSV is a multiplatform title, yes? The first in the series if you don't count Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and you shouldn't because that's a spin-off mostly done by Platinum Games.

Maybe Kojima was under severe pressure to produce a game that Westerners would like, that Xbox owners would want to play. And maybe he bowed to the widespread stereotype prevalent in Japan right now, which is- gamers in the West only care about shooters. I don't believe stealth will be eliminated from MGSV, but I get the sneaking suspicion that this "big surprise" will be a nod to the Western audience...or rather, a nod as far as the Japanese are concerned, which could be a very, very bad idea.

Personal gaming update

I wish I had more time to put into Tales of Xillia but unfortunately, the timing of that release sucks. There's Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Saints Row IV and Madden NFL 25 I have to take care of in the next couple of weeks, and Killzone: Mercenary and Grand Theft Auto V are right after that. But that's all right; I've long since discovered that I simply don't care enough about JRPGs unless they're turn-based. If they're just action/RPGs, I feel like there are much better options out there, and I've never cared about anime, anyway. I've just wanted the turn-based, which is mostly dead now.

By the way, that Mercenary beta is great; here's hoping it flourishes on the sales charts and the Vita gets a little boost. The only problem is that I don't know what else is coming out for Sony's handheld any time soon. I do have high hopes for Media Molecule's Tearaway, though.

It's amazing how small GTAIII is when you go back to it, but back then that seemed huge. It'll be fun to watch the hoopla when GTAV releases.

If Metal Gear Solid can be killed it will happen due to xbox.

I think of an action/RPG as being one where you fight on the same field by pressing the same buttons, Xillia actually has a separate battle system from something like Fable or Nier.

I just started Mars: War Logs for a review, believe it or not it's actually starting to look promising.

It's a different battle system but it's still real-time.

No, it's an action/RPG, but a much better done one than Tales of Xillia. :)

And FFXV will be an action............RPG. A new classification will be necessary.

I don't know what to think regarding the big surprise. I guess we'll all find out soon enough.

I'm okay with a variety of RPG combat types. I'm not strictly married to turn-based, nor would I say I prefer it. I say there's tons of reasons a person could be compelled to play an RPG that goes beyond tuns. But yah, it'd be nice to have more quality turn-based options these days, as I wouldn't want to see that combat type disappear entirely.

PGU: I've really been digging Splinter Cell HD. I played through the first mission without killing a dude or tripping an alarm of any kind. It's great stealth fun at it's best. I'm really tempted to platinum it too.
Other than that I've had my healthy dose of Tekken and DOA. Been also inching through Xenogears.

I don't think that GTAV will have the same impact as GTAIII did. I mean, sandbox games are a standard nowadays. No doubt it's be good, and certainly an evolutionary step in gaming, but revolutionary? Nah.

I'm not worried by what Kojima says. Sure, MGSV will be a bit more action oriented than past entries, that's almost a given, but I think his surprise is something more along the lines of what he's done before, i.e. forcing players to swap controller ports, The End battle. Something like that which breaks the fourth wall while still keeping you in the game.

Update:
Well, I went to transfer all the save data from my old system to the new and one or the other refused to recognise the ethernet cable. Swapped it over via USB instead, lost my save data for Deus Ex, Demon's Souls, Vanquish, XCOM, The Sly Trilogy and a couple of others. I was like.. damn, but okay. Then, just went to load up Ni no Kuni and it won't load because the data belongs to another user. Damn.
I ain't starting another game of NNK just yet. 36 hours to heartbreak. Nah, stuff it, I'm going to TLoU.
Nothing else has changed, really.
Peace.

if your ps3 has been wireless you need to switch it to wired first to recognize the cable. data transfer is way waster than backup. took me 19 hours to backup, 5 hours to data transfer

Temji,
So it goes.

World,
Will do man. Gotta say the opening was less impactful the second time around, but that may be because I was just trying to get back to where I was prior.

john,
Sound advice. The old one was never wireless though, and unless the new one is so out of the box... Either way, I'm not too upset. Just gives me another reason to go over all my games again and, frankly, going the data transfer route means that all the trophy data would be deleted. Not that it bothers me too much, but that would still be slightly disappointing.

nah, just sync trophy before you data transfer. once its saved on the server thats your trophy data. youre suppose to sync trophy then deactivate ps3 before data transfer. my almost 400gb transfer took about 5 hours compared to 19 hours x2 because it didnt do it right the first time. notto mention cooy protected files arent restored on other ps3.

ive done data trransfer 3 times before. i think it basically takes everything in the old ps3 and copies them over to the other ps3 completely. i dont know if the system backup saves trophy information too. but either way you probably used the backup restore so you have a back up data file that you have saved somewhere. so you really wont lose anything if you do data transfer. you can just do backup restore again and be back to what you have before data transfer. thats if you decide to do tha transfer still

That surprise isn't about MGSV being more action-oriented, simply because he said that it's something which can't be done in the movies. It's most certainly some kind of integration with various apps on smart devices, which Kojima has hinted as of late.

I'm not too overly concerned about the potential for the "big surprise" to be a step in the wrong direction. The way I see it is, it's Kojima, a step backwards puts the game only long ways ahead of the rest of the industry instead of the usual very long ways ahead. And lets not forget that we've only ever had perfection from the Kojima Metal Gears. Yes it's going multi plat and I don't like that, but it's the start of a new gen and even the exclusives haven't mastered the new hardware yet. The multiplat too exclusive difference isn't going to drastic this early.

It's could the worst Metal Gear instrumental yet, but judging from the trailers the graphics aren't going to disappoint and as always there is a lot to be said about the story, which imo is the best part of the franchise.

PGU: Away from the mother console for a while so this should give me enough time to finish up with Skyrim. I'm almost at the end of Golden Abyss which I consider to be a 9+ quality game. I might replay that one again after words. It's just a matter if I want to keep my PS+ account or not.

dont be ridiculous!
5 cant possibly have the impact 3 did.
3 was a massive leap for not only the series, but for the industry itself.
it really was the first massively open game available!
sure 5 may be very ambitious, and it may have a larger map than all of R*s games put together.
but that does not mean its going to be half as impressive as 3, simply because no matter how big and ambitious it is its still the been there done that.
theres nothing about the game that stands out and says wow weve never seen that before!
and thats one of this industries biggest problems, its lost the interest and excitement to reach beyond the boundaries, to think outside the square they live in.
everyones more focused on creating last years mindless pew pew experience!

as for MGSVs surprise i really couldent care less.
hes become one of the most overeggadurating teasing almost patronising people in the industry over the years, so thats really killed all my interest in what he says.
ill put 50 bucks down on this being another one of those, is that all!? that was worth hyping up!? moments.

so pissed off saints rows been delayed again!
sigh, guess i will be importing it after all.
gotta love it how they wait till 1 week before release to do this too, and no press releases or anything just do it quietly behind our backs.

- GTA V could be on the verge over being overhyped, if it just plays like a regular game that's really big people are gonna turn on it.

- I figured out MGSV, they are just gonna have it contact you on your cell phone with the codec noise with special information you can use in the game.

Don't care much for GTA. I may pick it up when it hits the bargain bin. Just can't seem to finish Rockstar games.

Not concerned about MGS5. It looks good but I do have a tough time believing it will wow me like the original and MGS4 did. Difficult getting excited about a game that has MS's corrupt and greedy fingers all over it.

PGU: its been all about Pikmin. About 80% done with Pikmin 2. Going on 40 days. About 15 days into Pikmin 3. Anyone who plans on getting a Wii U at some point, pick up Pikmin 3. It's a gem.

@Killa, for GTAV? Yea...while I think the size of the world and their ambition is impressive I'm just not that into Rockstars games. Rockstars' open world adventures bore me to death after so many hours unlike others like inFamous.

@Underdog, me either. The whole gangsta "make money, money, make money, money" thing is just blagh to me. I've never found these types of characters or plots impressive. Plus Rockstars guns play and shooting mechanics are crap in my opinion. Why must they stick auto aim in every game? No skill required.

BTW, in GTA IV, you can turn off auto aim, or you can choose to join games which have auto aim off. Which is what I do to my servers when I make em. The amount

Hours upon hours of side quests, mainly trying to up your status in life by committing crimes just does not appeal to me. GTA games glorify pointless violence and criminal activity too much without showing the consequences. It's the exact opposite of say Breaking Bad where the violence and meyham is entertaining but it shows how that behavior will destroy lives.

As for the game play, it's does a great job in making very large worlds with a ton of stuff to do but the gun play takes a back seat. It's just not as refined as other third person shooters.

To be honest, at this point it doesn't matter. You're killing in games and getting nothing but rewarded, even on TLOU. So how do you target GTA in this section if it does the same thing every other game is doing? Sure, GTA might reward you every hour of the game, without consequence, but any other shooter does the same through-out the game over a long period of time.

I disagree about the last of us. You're hardly ever rewarded for killing anything in that game and the level of violence makes you think about what you're doing. Gives you pause. In GTA you can run down civilians and everything goes on as if nothing happened. Even in inFamous there were some consequences for playing the villain. In GTA the villain is celebrated. Not my thing....

But, it's always kill to progress, this is my argument. Why should you 'care' if you get rewarded for anything, if the root of my argument lies with pulling that trigger and making contact?

Killing in the last of us has context. It's a fallen society where killing is often required to survive. In GTA its done for the joy of it and for money and power. Just don't dig that gangsta stuff.

GTA is driven by it's content. If you're not into that it's hard to be into GTA. I also have no interest in criminal games. When I can't like the characters or story or what I'm doing in the setting I just can't get into it, no matter how many different playing concepts they drop into it's melting pot.

I've just finished my second play through of The Last Of Us in survivor mode, and I did encounter a single bug and a minor AI glitch. I'm now on my third play through and it's on survivor+, this time around I'll just enjoy bringing the pain of brutality to the enemies, the hell with stealth. The game was just epic.
