At Generation's End: "I Wish I Hadn't Bought That"

Admit it, somewhere along the winding road of this generation somebody tricked you.

Maybe trick is a harsh word, but chances are you got on board a hype train at some point that headed off into a blind alley. Or if not a hype train then a bandwagon. If not a bandwagon then perhaps a popular trend.

Now that trend is a space waster, a dust collector, a plant hanger, a boat anchor, or an empty space in your wallet. Whatever form (or lack of form) it takes, right about now you're wishing you had that money back for the new generation of goodies.

Am I the only one with a Wii collecting dust instead of games? Or maybe you wish you hadn't replaced your Xbox 360 that fifth time. I admit I almost got caught up in the motion gimmick wave with the PS Move, but the killer apps never came and I managed to avoid being hornswaggled. Did you drop a bundle on a Move bundle that got a few hours of play? Have you got a cache of plastic guitars somewhere? Did you upgrade to a 3D TV only to find the glasses give you a titanic headache?

We can't forget the games that didn't deliver what they promised either. Remember Haze and Too Human? More recently Aliens fans could be wishing they didn't plunk down the full $60 on Colonial Marines.

While the used game market has allowed me to recoup some of the costs of games that just didn't deliver, there is a list of them I'd rather forget getting involved with. I know I have a PS Eye in a cabinet somewhere too.

What do you wish you hadn't bought this generation?

I dont regret any of my purchases. I stand by PS Move because it made for a solid alternate way to play MAG, RE5 and Killzone to name a few. On top of that Sports Champions was good. But Ill admit I too was looking for something more, but I spent my time and had my fun with it so its hardly a regret.

My only regret is purchasing too many games. I want to enjoy them all and I plan too but sadly some get pushed aside and thats unfortunate. Theres still games Ive yet to even play and thats even more unfortunate. I still havnt played Portal 2,or Bioshock: Infinite and Im sure theres others. I just got too many games. Guess I need to get rid of a few.

The move / sharpshooter. Yeah I enjoyed the KZ3 and resistance 3 campaigns - (and the Socomm 4 campaign was ok) but then there were no further games and its gathered dust since.

Hopefully if the ps4 camera supports it for the KZ4 campaign my trusty sharpshooter will taste helgan blood again

I am so outrageously picky that it is extremely rare that I buy something I wished I hadn't. I could go as far as to say I have made some purchases that I thought were for me but ended up being for someone else. For example, I bought the remastered DuckTales. Well, I pretty much suck at platforming - at least as far as straightforward platformers are concerned. Alas, the money was not wasted as my wife quite enjoys it. Now, I could say that I have spent a lot of money only to get rid of what I spent it on. I had an impressive PS3 library at one point, but decided I needed a break - which meant I HAD to sell all of my equipment. Oh, no... I couldn't just put it all in a box and tuck it away until a later date - I got rid of everything. So... what I spent hundreds on, I got less than half in return for. But... what can you do but move on and buy everything all over again, eh?

Enslaved. The story was praised by many but in the end I didn't like it. The concept is great but how the scenes played out is kind of underwhelming for me.

Final Fantasy XIII-2. I just wish I didn't bought it brand new.

I actually loved Enslaved - pretty game, fun story, dodgy mechanics. The Pigsy DLC was pretty grim though

I could not agree more. I had just high hopes for it.
I think of my lot of over 100 games, it stands as the only game I started, but never finished. I got about half way before stopping.

The control mechanics were just too wonky (I blame the Unreal engine on PS3) and each stage felt like an individual STAGE...not an area in the game that makes up the whole of the story.
Each level felt like a stage in Lemmings or Lode Runner or something. (not sure if anyone gets those references...oh well)

Haha, this is easy for me: Move. That's the only thing I straight out *regret* buying.

There's also plenty of games I never should have bought but at least they gave me *some* fun. Move has just been one tirade of disappointments.

I've heard that from a few others too, but I can't understand how you really can mean it. I didn't try MAG but I did try RE5 and Killzone 3, and they were both horrible - especially RE5 became unplayable imo. The mappings of the different features just felt so wrong, and it all was just annoying.

I've tried several different games with Move, and only one worked well: The sports game that was launched around the same time as Move.
Well, Ruse worked semi-ok too. But the rest? Useless. That's my opinion on this matter.

The only move game that really worked for me was Unfinished Swan, it just seemed to work really well both for movement and actions in that game.

The tumble demo worked well but it just wasn't my sort of game, ditto with some of the lightgun style games.

Maybe your hand eye coordination is bad. ;)

I thought RE5 was actually more enjoyable and brought back the sense of panic. Trying so hard to get that headshot without actually being inaccurate. My accuracy actually improved in RE5. Not sure what you mean by the mapping because the actions pressed by whatever button remained the same. Not to mention you could change it. MAG was a game that it simply worked well with. Ill admit I didnt choose move over the controller but it offered an alternate enjoyment.

The best implementation though was for Heavy Rain. That was a no brainer. As soon as I started using Move with it I never used the controller again.

Speaking of Move, Sony hasn't really shown off any real tech demonstration of the new HD PSeye or Move integration. I think atm, they're focusing on the core gamers. Perhaps, when things settle down, they'll market it more.

I make my purchases very carefully, so there is none that comes to mind. However, there is one game that comes to mind that I'm glad I never purchased and that's Little Big Planet Karting. I played it for PS Plus last month, and it's just a horrible experience. The potential is great with the creation mode and stuff, but one of the most important aspect of the game, the ummm... GAMEPLAY, is horrible. It's slow, weapons are get boring and repetitive quickly and defense mechanic sucks.

The sharpshooter bundle, only b/c i haven't used it much, though i still plan on using it on RE5:GE, KZ3, and R3. I'd say the playstation 3d monitor since i haven't used it much, either, but, considering i got on black friday of last year for only $99, i don't think i could've gotten a better monitor for that price or even more. I'd have to say my 360 (which i sold eventually), only b/c i got a gaming laptop a couple years back that still blows away the 360 for multiplats... 3 years old, and it still rocks games. Just finished playing some Sleeping Dogs at 1080p, with high res texture pack, clocking in 30-60fps...GTA5 can wait.

I think the only big thing I regret buying is MAG. I thought it would be fun to play, but the mechanics were terrible, and finding a game now-a-days takes forever. Not only that, but they're shutting down the servers for it too. I guess the Move would be a bad buy as well, as I hardly touch it. But it's mostly just my laziness, not so much as I don't like it.

Sorry, I have to disagree.

MAG stands as one of the best FPS multiplayer games I've ever played. (and I've played lots)

I think MAG has a bit of a learning curve, which probably puts off a lot of people. I don't blame you for not liking it, but I think maybe you just need to give it a bit more time to get used to it.
I see a lot of FPS games now "borrow" a lot of things from MAG.

Only 2 games I regret buying. SOCOM 4 is one of them. Awful campaign, game play, online. There was very few redeeming qualities. The other is Bioshock 2. I know how much its loved by many people. While it did have decent gameplay, the story just felt like a drag. Perhaps if it didn't have the Bioshock title I might have enjoyed it. I mean considering the original Bioshock and Bioshock:Infinite are 2 of the best games I've ever played, Bioshock 2 was a major let down. I'm not sure if it had to do with the addition of multiplayer or the fact that Ken Levine wasn't involved it just felt uninspired.

Wouldn't say I have any regrets, really. Sure, I've picked up some dodgy games, but I treat them as learning experiences in order to not make the same mistake a second (or third, in some cases) time. If I had to come up with one, it would be buying more games than I have the time to play. It's a little frustrating to look at my shelf and see all these games that I want to play, and just not have the time to do so. I'm blaming it on the developers for making too many games that I want :P

GTA IV and Metroid: Other M were probably my biggest disappointments but I don't know if I'd say I regret buying them. I traded the Wii in to help pay my pre-order on the PS4. Again I don't know as I'd say I regret buying the Wii since I do think it was a very good console from 2006 to 2010, but man it became completely useless after that.

im wishing i hadent replaced my ps3 the over 10th time!
but hey thats what extended warranty is for so at least it wasent too much of a expense.
gotta add move and vita to that list.
move could of been awesome, so many people refuse to play shooters on consoles because analog sticks are about as accurate as pissing in a hurricane!
move could of been the perfect way to fix that, but my god was that a half a$$ed solution!
THE half a$$ed solution to end all half a$$ed solutions!
gives a whole new meaning to the term tacked on.

vitas even worse!
it started really well with golden abyss, than gravity rush got delayed SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many times!
then it FINALLY comes out, and behind all the typically stylistic art it was a VERY thin basic repetitive game.
then resistance retribution, oh god the less said about that the better!
oh sweet the vitas getting its own AC and CoD title, two of this generations biggest franchises!
oh dear, that did not end well.......
and thats about it really.
the only good games on the vita are either ports of ps3 games like rayman, or retooled console franchises like LBP or KZM.
vitas still yet to see a title that makes it shine, a title that defines and warrants its existence.

3D has to be thrown into the midst too, not because its a gimmick, but because it just is not implemented properly.
done well 3D can be amazing, see avatar.
but thats exactly the problem, games, movies, ALL forms of entertainment, avartar is the ONLY 3D experience ive had that actually makes me say wow 3D really IS worth it!
1 experience.
ONE!?
out of, how many 3D movies and games have been released now?
we really need to wait till VR devices like the oculus rift come into the market before 3D will really hit its stride.
seeing the UE4 tech demo with the rift, the snow falling from the skies, the depth perception it gives you, the sense of scale and fear as you walk up to the imposing knight.
you just cant get that out of a your normal 3D TV.

Number 2 getting hooked on Playstation Home sure some good things happen to me on there like me finding a girlfriend on there. Dont laugh we been together almost two years and we aready saw each other in real life & plan on moving in together real soon. Only bad thing about my addiction to Playstation Home is my back log i don't remember the last time i played & beat a game lol

Resistance 3 - Considering the ending for R2, it was very tricky to make a follow up. We got a new character - Who was in the previous game but looked and acted nothing like how he was in R2. The story was bland and failed to explore any new territory, the variations of Chimera were very un-inspiring and the game was just so buggy. I played the game on two consoles and at the end of every level the game would just cut out to 10-15 seconds of pitch black. I loved Resistance 1 & 2 but R3 took the series down from being a triple A contender - Yet it got really, really positive reviews everywhere, which I simply do not understand.

Journey - I am all for abstract visuals and ambiguity but when the Journey was over, I realised I didn't understand what it was about at all. I enjoyed parts of it, but the ending really makes you feel like it was all just a waste of time.

Little Big Planet - A really good concept, the problem is the public. You give them creativity and all you get is just fans replicating other games like Mario. Gamers simply wouldn't care for a very well designed level if it wasn't themed by something they knew of, something which had been established like Mario. So while the concept was great the public ruined it.

Purchased the digital version of SOCOM Confrontation because my one friend IRL was always playing it. Unfortunately, that was right before MW2 came out. Considering I was new to FPS and the game had already been out for a year, I had no chance. And since it was the digital version I was stuck with it.

The other was Starhawk, bought it Day 1. It just never had the same feel as Warhawk, and I put the hours into it. Never have I put so much time into a game that I did not like playing hoping that it would finally click.

ME3 was a game I wish I waited on. Regret spending any money on that game.

There is a game called War Z, but now called infestation survivor stories, and it was supposed to be like Day Z but better and it was just a big old cash grab lie. Luckily it was only 10 bucks or so.

Really though, I haven't regretted a whole lot this generation. I'm pretty careful with my purchases now, and except for some indy games on the PC that I dropped some money to just check out I really don't regret anything. Except ME3....should have waited for a price drop.

Most of the Move stuff was a quickly passing novelty, but I got enough entertainment value to justify it.

Metal Gear Rising. It wasn't terrible and I enjoyed it, but I was hoping for a semi Vanquish 2 and instead I got a mound of overly frustrating failed attempts at blocking. I'm playing though GOWIII right now and I wished I had just stuck with that one.

I do a lot of research on a game before I drop any jack on it, so I do not have any games that I regret buying. I do have some games that disappointed.

I'm glad I played it so I'm on the fence about saying I regret it, but Metal Gear Rising. I found the game mechanics infuriating. I mean I got ANGRY playing that game, something hasn't happened to me since I was a much younger man. I persevered because I love the Metal Gear Solid games so much and WANTED to like Rising. But the difficulty of the last boss was nothing short of ludicrous. I couldn't come CLOSE to beating him, despite hours and hours of trying across several days. There's something about the blocking mechanism in that game that my brain just didn't process well. I'd swear I was doing a perfectly executed attack block and I'd still get hit, over and over and over again. I never finished it and I kind of hate seeing that thing on my shelf. I hate to dilute my Metal Gear games collection but man, that one might have to go.

That final boss fight also made me infuriate! I spent at least two hours just getting to the middle of the fight.

I completely understand what you went through. The only way I was able to do it on normal was with the dodge move that you can buy. The parry technique is very elusive for what ever reason.

My mistakes were mostly controller-based. The PlayStation Move is useful for "light gun games" but they aren't games I frequently play. I bought my nephew and niece Kinect but they rarely play anything that requires it. I bought a PC wireless Xbox 360 controller that set me back $80 CAN. I had no choice in this case as both my wired Xbox 360 and Logitech controllers died on me and it's ridiculous that these wired controllers break when people wrap the cords up.

No stand out titles or accessories really. I'm pretty careful about only purchasing a game that I absolutely know I'll enjoy and never get rid of.

My only real regret this gen is always feeling the need to buy games I'm excited about day one. I end up buying all or a lot of the dlc and then a few months later a game of the year edition or a complete edition comes out that's sometimes less than half the price of what I ultimately paid and comes with everything.

I'm really starting to hate that. It's getting to a point where I'm almost afraid to buy ANY game right away. Fighting games I definitely wont buy for about a year after release at the least....

havent had buyers remorse this generation nearly as bad as the last generation. the only games that come close would be guitar hero with the controller and sims 3. both of them left me thinking why did i bother? my only true game shame moment came when i bought DOA beach volleyball. i realized i needed to grow up. and i also learned shortly thereafter to not shop at lamestop unless i had to.

Like many here, I'm extremely picky about what I buy. Furthermore, as most games are sent to me as review copies anyway, I rarely have the "consumer regret" problem. ;)

However, that being said, there are plenty of games I honestly wish I'd never seen in the mail for review. ...actually, a great many.

Medal of honor: warfighter. I actually liked it but the mp was so broken it was passed over by most gamers before they had a chance to even begin to fix it. Bottom line, they rushed it out before it was ready and it single handedly destroyed the franchise. To make it worse I paid full price

I wish I hadn't bought GTA4 or Resident Evil 5. Waste of money. Boring and and controls cumbersome. Well the combination made each worse. Just not my type of games, but I tried and I failed. Or the failed actually to entertain me.

Bouthgt Halo 3 for the Xbox 360, and I never bought the Xbox360. With all the issue with the system back then I was weary and avoided it. Had to play what I could on a friends. Might be worth picking it up soon after launch on the cheap? lol

Keep playing!

Season passes, thanks to Uncharted 3 I've avoided any that is featured in other games. I had been expecting the same online experience as with Uncharted 2. Uncharted 3 had it's fun moments, yes, but not $80 worth.

well the only regrets i have really is pre-ordering BOII even though i like the t shirt i got the game didn't even come close to meet my expectations for it and quite frankly BO1 and BOII are well boring to me now and they are collecting dust and but idk maybe these another 1 or 2 things but um yeah not much regrets considering i only got a ps3 just over 2 years ago so not much time to make those kind of mistakes.

happy gaming =)

Definitely skyrim, sank way too much time into. I'm really just joking with skyrim, I wouldn't have bought it twice if I wasn't. But this generation has been great and I'm excited for the future, the only games that have been terrible are the ones everyone expects to be terrible, i.e. any movie based game. Really the only game I regret buying is far cry 2. The game is alright, but when I was first reading about it I had an image of a game that was so much more than what I paid for. I'm sure there are others I've bought but that's the first that came to mind.

Haze is my big regret this generation. Thought the concept was great, bought into the hype, and preordered it. They wouldn't even accept it as a trade in a week later.

The regretful purchases that come to my mind are my Wii and Killer is Dead. I was all on board the wii hype train but like the article says mine is just collecting dust, I don't think I played it since 2010 (my wife played one of the Harvest Moons on it since then though). Killer is Dead was just an unforgiveable mess.

For me it was definitely Skyrim. Massive and BEAUTIFUL world (I bought it on PC), lots of quests, and I'm not much of a story kind of guy, so I give the story a passing grade. However, one of the couple things I didn't like about that game was the combat system. It was dull. It's odd because I also played Dishonored and I found the combat system in that game more fun than Skyrim. It was probably for the second reason I didn't like Skyrim, it's difficulty, it didn't have any.I played on the hardest mode (this was before the legendary edition came out) and I expected to be challenged, but I was very disappointed.

For me it's not so much about being disappointed about what I bought, each game entertained me for the price I paid for them... What I was more disappointed about was big hype about what was going to come, just to have it shut down, my example was this, The Agency: Covert Ops (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Agency:_Covert_Ops)... I was really looking forward to this game, followed all the hype, and trailers, and then BAM, they close down SOE Seattle, and cancel it, when they appeared to be moving right along. No I didn't waste any money on this, but I wasted my time and was disappointed to see it cancelled instead of moved to a different team... I hope it gets resurrected for the PS4, but I doubt it!
