Duke Nukem: Should They Try Again?

Let's face it: Duke Nukem Forever was an absolute travesty. It just was.

Most times, when games bomb, that's that. We really don't hear much about them. But in this particular case, there's a lot more to consider.

Firstly, we're talking about an iconic franchise, a series that helped blaze the first-person shooter trail. Secondly, DNF took 13 damn years to come to fruition; we first heard about it way back in the late 90s and it didn't arrive until 2011. Hell, this is the game that brought about the word "vaporware." Thirdly, there's no doubt that we've got some supremely talented developers in the world of first-person shooters, so it's a given that a great team could produce a great Duke Nukem title.

The question is, should they? Maybe it's just better to let the IP die a merciful death. I mean, this was the failure of all failures. There have been many anticipated games that flopped, but I don't think any flopped quite as badly, especially not after that long of a waiting period. I guess Daikatana was close for PCers but that's about it. DNF had been dubbed "Did Not Finish" and honestly, it would've been better off if no developer had finished it. But is it wrong to just let it slip away into oblivion? Don't we owe it to Duke to try again? It'd be perfect because FPSs are taking themselves awfully seriously these days; I miss concepts like Serious Sam, for instance.

And nothing is more tongue-in-cheek than Duke. But if they do try again, there can be no failure. It has to be great, and it can't take a bazillion years to finish. If we have to go through that again, it'll be torture for the IP in question and it will go down in the annals of history as a sh**** franchise. And that ain't fair. If a good team could appropriately resurrect it, though...

It's a quandary.

They pretty much have to. Gearbox said they bought the name so they could make their own Duke game. Forever was clearly a patchwork of other devs aged designs that Gearbox and 2K polished up and stitched together in order to A: Test the market for the old franchise, and B: Make some money off a mythical name to help fund their studio.

I really hope that they do too, Duke needs a full modernization and if one were done properly (maybe like a mix of Blood Dragon and Bulletstorm) it would be the proper boot to the eye that crappy military FPS games need and gamers deserve.

Or they could go retro in a DL only title...

Honestly DNF would've been better received if it were released way back in the 90s... they took too long for this one, like the milk I always keep in my refrigerator, knowing damn well it is no longer safe for human consumption...

Yes, they absolutely SHOULD try again.
DNF was a long awaited disappointment. Maybe they should do episodic releases , download only?

Guess I'm one of the few who wasn't as disappointed with DNF as everybody else. But then again, I didn't expect it to be the best shooter to ever be released either. It was a nice follow up to DN 3D though. Not quite as fun, but still enjoyable. People just expected way too much.

Yeah they should give it another shot. I still say that Duke, Lo Wang, and Serious Sam should team up at some point for some sort of adventure. All the one liners those three would pump out would be worth playing it for.

I just rewound my mind into the 90s and had plenty of fun with it, especially the Doctor Who Cloned me DLC. I think the low low scores were unwarranted because while it was outdated there actually wasn't much wrong with it from a technical standpoint.

hell yes they should!
theres a massive revival of the oldschool run and gun shooter, after leaving bugthesdas booth last week after seeing wolfenstein the new order, it was so exciting to see the oldschool fast paced run and gun shooter back!
hell even look at the sudden popularity of shadowgun.
miss the good old days where games use to give you a shotgun in your left hand, a katana in the right, and gave you massive amounts of enemies to just rip to shreds!
no cover, no dodging a grenade every 2 seconds, just run through the hordes decapitating as many limbs as possible!

They should do it but the humour needs to get caught up with the times. I think it would be even more hilarious if people didn't like Duke and he was sort of washed up and trying to find himself in the modern world.

That or they just need to reboot him a bit, with a more modern flair.

I think he needs another game but it needs to be done right, and I think gearbox can do it if they get some of the writers from Borderlands working on it. Those guys are pretty funny.

DNF was pretty terrible - so at the very least expectations would be drastically lowered for any further entries.

People will always remember the old games fondly but maybe it's time to just let it go. Duke Nukem Forever was a mess and it's probably tainted the public's perception of the franchise too badly. If gamers weren't aware of the DNF drama before, then they surely realized it when they got the disc home and realized how much of a mess the finished game was. I bought it used from Gamefly for $2.50 and still don't really feel as though I got my money's worth!

No. Let him rest where he belong: In the fond memories of the past.

Make a new IP instead. Something the creators can feel ownership of.

I quite enjoyed DNF. I liked the humour style and the bits I hated the most related to the encroachment from more modern games.
