Ben's Week In Review: October 20

Countdown to the PS4! Only a little over three weeks away...

Man, those two big delays are disheartening

Next to Beyond: Two Souls, Watch Dogs was my most anticipated title of the fall. I still loved Beyond but after being slightly disappointed in the result, I was convinced that Ubisoft's new IP could be the autumn game of my dreams. Some years ago, Gran Turismo 6 would've qualified, but I find myself drawing farther away from sports and racing titles. GT6 could still hook me, but I may not have the requisite time. Therefore, when I heard about the Watch Dogs delay, I was definitely disappointed. And we lost The Crew, too, which is amplified by the additional delay of the anticipated PS4 launch title, Driveclub.

Granted, Driveclub wasn't really high on my priority list, but its loss makes the PS4 launch lineup look more anemic. Furthermore, it would've been a nice little bonus for PlayStation Plus subscribers (the game is to be part of the Instant Game Collection when it arrives; i.e., free for Plus peeps), and that service is essentially a requirement in the new generation. I just think the industry could've done without these delays, although I do agree with analyst Mike Hickey, who said the Watch Dogs delay was the right thing to do. If it isn't ready, it isn't ready. Don't give us a disappointing product; give us excellence. We'll wait.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...

I want Kingdom Hearts III more than Final Fantasy XV, and certainly more than Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Did you see that new KHIII gameplay footage? How pretty was that? Ten years ago, I never would've said I wanted a new Kingdom Hearts over a new Final Fantasy; I mean, that would've been a joke. I liked KH just fine but it wasn't a patch on my favorite RPG franchise of all time. Now, if Square Enix is just going to turn FF into an action-based game - even if it is an action/RPG - I'd rather take the KH formula. I don't need the flashy, in-your-face, "we're not really trying to be Western but we kinda are" new FF formula. That blows. Sorry, but it does. At least KH still has its own style and charm to it; if I want action with RPG elements, there will probably be a lot better games out there than FFXV. Yeah, I said it. And sadly, it will turn out to be all too true.

I just hope they get the mechanics right in KHIII. I always had a problem with the camera and, to some extent, the control in previous installments. If they can nail that down and they don't force me to keep the same teammates throughout (Donald and Goofy are fine but really, why would I use them when there are so many cooler characters in the game?), I'm all in. And if they allow Cloud or Sephiroth to be playable...oh dear Lord...

Personal gaming update

So I went through Beyond again to see if I could alter the story significantly, and I really can't. It's just much more linear than Heavy Rain. The only good news is that you can indeed get vastly different endings by making important choices towards the end...but that's only toward the end. This is one of the biggest reasons why I believe Quantic Dream's latest comes up a little short. Of course, they set the bar extremely high with Heavy Rain (and before that, Indigo Prophecy; darn good idea to do a high-def remake), so maybe it should've been expected. But I still say they went too far into the action realm; QTEs just start to take the player out of the experience when more is happening. Great story, though, and the acting from the main characters was superb. Definitely a must-play for people who like the artistic side of gaming and who appreciate an emotional narrative.

My girlfriend and I are going through The Cave; she loves the puzzle-solving elements and it's not too strenuous in terms of platforming. We also go back to Dragon's Crown from time to time, which is just fun. I'm considering going through Beyond co-op (it does support two players, after all) but above all else, we just want that Portal 3 announcement. Yes, I know, maybe in 2020. I get how Valve works. LOL ;)

The way I see Beyond is that what you do opens and closes those ending opportunities while crafting the experience. Unfortunately by the end it all seems quite contrived, I just did all this stuff and instead of seeing how everything turned out I these very stark decisions to make. While I do want to go back and see what those big differences were I might wait awhile because the ending I got with my choices was really really satisfying. It was exactly what I envisioned for the Jodie I lived as, and I mean down to the detail. It could have been patched together a little better but still an incredible experience and I loved the revelation about Aiden.

I could never be excited about Kingdom Hearts cuz of Disney, even if you put old school Final Fantasy into the mix. Hopefully Versus remains Japanese in tone and gameplay, it sure looks like it will and that will have to be enough. Mostly looking forward to FFX/X-2 HD. I think maybe I didn't grasp the depth of the stories back in the day and now that FF stories are bad I want to look deeper into those.

See my avatar? I finally made progress in Persona 4 after being stuck in the same place for over 2 years! So I'm gonna finally be able to finish :) Just waiting on some Persona 5 news now.

Isn't the name Aydin/Aden (Arabic origin pronounced "I-den" which is a male name but also referring Arabian peninsula and possibly related to "Eden" ) rather than the Gaelic name Aiden (as in "Aiden Quinn")?

The context, however, seems somewhat related to the Gaelic one, as the Gaelic name is derived from a fiery diety of Gaelic lore. At the same time, Jinn, extraterrestrial beings of a "smokeless fire" essence (one of whom was Satan himself) is a part of Arabian lore, as well. I'm curious how Beyond relates with these themes.

@Shams nahh in the game it is Aiden...i would tell you more but it would really ruin the endiong for you and anyones who hasnt played but i can say that he is not a Jinn...perhaps some of the enemies you face are but Aiden is an entirely different entity from them

I don't want to spoil it either, so I'll just tell you it's not Aiden Pearce from Watch Dogs secretly hacking you either :)

I despise Kingdom Hearts. I hate anything Disney. You can bet Disney is gonna gay up the Star Wars franchise as much as possible.

Final Fantasy 14 is where it's at right now. They still need tons of more end game content in my opinion. But they are going to bring in Lightning for a FATE (a pve experience)and many are excited for that (not me). But rumor has it that they might bring in the single most dangerous character ever created in the Final Fantasy universe for a FATE later on to fight. You can bet, if they do this, he will be damn well next to impossible to beat. Oh yes, he would kick Lightning's ass without a second thought.

His name is Sephiroth, and he is your God.

End of line.

I dunno Ben... for ethird, the only way to go is up.

I love Disney. My favorite part about them is the stocks I own. And I hate myself a little bit since it's a guilty pleasure... but damnit man... I love me some Pirates of the Caribbean.

I've said my piece on those delayed games.

I need to get my hands on the KH1.5 and 2.5 ReMIX compilations to get amped for KHIII. They're supposedly quality games, and the third one is sounding really great, but I'm worried about how long it's going to take. FFXV has been in development for like, seven years now and KH3 isn't going to be Nomura's focus until the former is finished, which isn't likely to be any earlier than 2015 (if only to put a year between it and Lightning Returns). It's gonna be ages away.

And Lightning Returns actually doesn't seem all that bad, having gone hands-on with it. The combination of the ATB with real-time movement, alongside having three different ability loadouts with each having its own ATB makes for a delightfully strategic system. Can't say much for the RPG elements, though, and I'm not sure whether it's a crying shame or a damn good thing that the platforming is almost entirely automated...

Personal Update:
Finished reading Shantaram. You need to read it right now. Though it does drag in parts, the way it deals with philosophy and mixes it with a really invigorating, grounded story and brilliant characters makes it clear why it is regarded as a modern classic. Moving on to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas now.
Still playing PES 2014 on and off. Still don't know how in the hell I'm going to write that review for it :/ Should be picking up Beyond next weekend.
Peace.

if the games not ready you dont suddenly wake up and go into work one week before shipping time and decide to delay the game!
as ive said a billion times everytime this happens it happens because of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
and the ultimate irony is, and id say karma, they wont sell as well when they finally do release.
watch dogs was a highly anticipated game because it was a launch title, now its just another title within the masses.
same goes for driveclub, even though i HATE the social facebook game feel it gives me, i would of tried it anyway because, hey, theres only 3 first party games at launch so i kinda had no choice!
but now, no thanks i got better things to waste my time and money on.

dont really care about KH3, the lure and excitement of playing with mickey and donald died off years ago!
im more interested in FFXV.
the darker side of FF really caught my attention, so did the, well, what 7 year wait?
and thats so far, even if it released in 2 years time, which i seriously doubt it would, it will still become the most delayed title in the history of console exclusives!

i gave up on beyond yesterday, it was just pissing me off too much trying to play the game differently and getting the exact same results!
WTFs the point of giving me different options if the results going to be the same?
a perfect example once nathan reveals what hes doing with his research and wants your help you can either agree, refuse, or cold was the third option.
but no matter what you choose you end up helping him anyway.
so WTFs the point of giving me the option to choose what i do if i end up doing only one thing anyway?
its like someone asks you if you like chicken, than you say no, so then they give you chicken for dinner.
WTFs the point of asking me if your going to go do it anyway?

moved onto zelda wind waker HD for now.
one thing ive always hated about the zelda games they NEVER give you any hints or clues on what you need to do.
for instance most games if you walk into a room you get a cut scene moving the camera towards the exit, or towards whatever you need to do.
zelda blindfolds you, pops earmuffs on you, than takes you out into the desert and expects you to find your way home.
kinda frustrating and boring wondering around for a hour wondering WTF your suppose to do because there was no instructions given to you at the start of the level.
seriously, is it so much to ask for a little cut scene pointing you to the right direction?
perfect example you meet this girl on a bridge and you get a cut scene as you enter, it collapses and she asks you to help her get across.
you get her across, a cut scene triggers and she tells you not to follow her go give this to the prince blah blah blah.
so you go to the prince, then i spent a hour wandering around trying to figure out WTF your suppose to do now!
turns out your suppose to follow her.
so why couldent the game tell you that, instead of telling you to go give this to the prince and assume he will give you your next objective?

bought sonic lost worlds today hoping it will be half decent.
eh, cant be as boring as generations was can it!?
its funny how sonic colors was the best 3D sonic game, i mean a wii game.
just goes to show how next gen consoles, and the obsession with ooooooo look at that perrty fireball, destroyed gaming!

Once i've finished playing the game, there are only 2 more games that I'll be playing this year.. And that's Batman: Arkham Origins and Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag.. I don't plan on buying the ps4 this year, I'll buy it next year..

while I'm disappointed DriveClub was delayed, I'm also glad for three reasons - first, putting out something to make the launch date, and patching the bejesus out of it later, is less preferable than putting it out when it's right. It will still be free (with reduced content) for Plus members when it comes out.

Second, as Plus members we're now getting Contrast - which to me more exemplifies Sony's approach with the PS4 to "try something different".

Third, I'll be too busy playing Black Flag and Killzone to properly dedicate myself to a third game!

Oh how a Portal 3 would be nice! I like the "vastly" different ending idea for Beyond. Might pick that one up when it's cheaper, assuming I'm not overwhelmed with a PS4.

PGU: Beat ICO! With out using any guides. Parts of it felt like grinding, but the ending was worth it. The whole game is so quiet and non answering that it leaves lot to interpretation.

I found someone else to play video games with! Lots of KZ3 co op and played Soul Caliber IV for the first time. Knytt Underground is relaxing, but kinda hard to. I resist the urge to play more KZ:M. Saving that one for later. Today I start in on Shadow of Colossus.

All the analysts are saying these push-backs are a good move and I agree with them. Competing with GTA V is not a good idea at this time for Watch Dogs and DriveClub's sales could be affected by Gran Turismo 6. I can wait, grudgingly. Maybe I'll buy something like Assassin's Creed 4 or Killzone on Boxing Day. I'm going to just buy Knack and a PSN game plus my free PS+ stuff since I still have 2 months left to start.

I sold the PS3 and games and I am now taking a break from serious video gaming. I'll play something in my backlog on occasion on my PC but it could be a long time before I get my hands on something that had me playing video games up to 6 hours a day like GTA V did.

What happened to all the Tifa's?

Anyway, looking forward to both, Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XV. Somethings could be done different in XV but its the same thing with KoRn, they try different things. Now while i do not like the change they did with 13, i have much faith in XV and especially since Nomura is in charge. I could care less if its more action oriented or not. Its not a horror game I want to stay slow and calm. I do hope they make a new FFT or turn based FF game but for now everything i was expecting from versus13 is looking fantastic. Good or bad, the game may be my favorite FF in the series.

Bought Aliens Colonial marines on the ps3 this time. The MP is surprisingly fun. I didn't expect much out of it. Campaign is exactly the same as it was on pc. Fun and a little ridiculous. In MP you play as an alien in 3rd person and i was a little bothered by it because I was remembering AVP's First Person alien view. So i decided to play some AVP. AVP is so badarse. Did survival in a pitch black map and man was that scary. Then did some pred vs aliens with random people. Managed to convince some friends to get off of 14 and gtao to play with me. Other than that I've been playing a little bit of everything. Decided variety would be great. Today i started playing borderlands 1 again and am trying to get my roomate and his fiance to join in with me.

Been a busy week full of randomness for me though. It snowed out while i was out jogging and as soon as i got back it was sunny out again. My laptop crashed hard and even got a blue screen and after i updated it (finally) no issues have been had again. I bought some 10$ ice cream for my girlfriends birthday, rasberry cheesecake, and I forgot something so i went to a different walmart which was closer and found it for 3$. Oh, i got an invite to dark souls 2 beta and for some reason so did my girlfriend. I didnt play it because I like being surprised.

Then people have been trying to tell me about rumors of killzone shadowfall going on ps3. I dunno why this week has been ridiculous. And then Tifa has vanished from everything. Somethings afoot... Got my mom a ps3 for mothers day and she found my old ff7 game and has been playing it. I just thought that was awesome. hope everyone is doing ok because i doubt i was the only one having an off week

Replayed some of the chapters to get the bonuses and some trophies in Beyond Two Souls. Starting the repay with a friend in duo mode and see how much fun it is with a buddy. Love the game and still waiting for the complete Soundtrack to be released.

In as much as I love this game and the experience. The combat works for me as David attempts to make it cinematic. May work for some and not others. I can see for some the feedback is not to their liking. For me, its a diff experience or approach to it. Sometime, not always, something different can be good. In the end, you get out of a game what you put in and expect of it. Satisfied here and wish there was more. Enjoying it more than Heavy Rain although I do miss Madison. :)

Different experience that LoU and for me, a far more interesting story, but BOTH I have to say are the top games for overall experience for me. Too bad it came at the end of the PS3, but glad it came.

I recently found the disc on my game shelf of Undead Nightmare, the standalone game for Red Dead Redemption. HOW the heck did I miss that? and I bought it I guess a year ago. Ugh! Gonna have to put some time aside for that one.

Back to B2S. :)

Keep playing and peace!

I'm not playing this week, the electricity in my province is still down because of a typhoon, it's for a week now. But I'm reading some novels that I picked up a long time ago in a book sale instead "New Moon Rising" by: Eugenia Price (a good read about the old south, based on real people, The Goulds.)
and "The Way Life Should Be" by: Christina Baker Kline. (basically a novel for a woman, didn't know it, just picked it up because of the title, but I did like it, funny characters, and the way she describes Maine). Right now I'm into The Da Vinci Code. I find the first chapters quite boring, maybe because I've seen the movie first. Haha.
