Ben's Week In Review: November 24

The PlayStation 4 has been out for over a week now. What's your take on Sony's new console? Love it?

The Last Guardian had better be freakin' amazing

For the most part, I'm the most patient human alive. I'm especially patient when it comes to waiting for anticipated games; admittedly, this is partly due to my lack of time. I have no problem waiting for something because I always have plenty to play. However, when it comes to projects like The Last Guardian, delays sort of irritate me. This is the kind of game we need; the type of experience the industry demands; in the midst of constant shooters and balls-to-the-wall action games, Guardian is like a beacon. For those who want more substance in their gaming, for those who desire something beyond flashy graphics and ceaseless explosions and gunfire, this is a game that sits atop their priority list. This is a game that calls to them.

So, it's nice that Ueda has apologized and I do believe in the sincerity of that apology. However, if there's one game on the horizon that could've done without the "vaporware" label, it's this one. I think Journey proved just how badly avid gamers occasionally seek a relaxing reprieve from the standard blockbuster insanity. I believe The Last Guardian represents a style and form of gameplay that may be on life support in the coming years. Hence, let me say this- I appreciate the apology but get it here ASAP.

The availability of next-gen consoles is saving them right now

I do think the launches in question were rushed, as evidenced by my recent op-ed. However, despite any hardware issues and lackluster launch lineups, both systems tallied over 1 million units in just 24 hours (and yes, I realize the Xbox One released in many more countries). Perhaps most telling is GameStop's announcement concerning the PS4 eclipsing the PS3. And we're not just talking about surpassing; think about it: The PS4 only needed one week to sell as many consoles as the PS3 sold in its first three months. Now, that doesn't mean the PS4 is eons better. It really doesn't. All it means is that there were actually PS4 units to sell. Same goes for the Xbox One, or so it would appear.

See, hardcore gamers are often willing to risk getting a busted system, they're willing to deal with a less-than-impressive launch lineup...they just want in on a new generation ASAP. They just weren't allowed in early last time around because Sony and Microsoft simply didn't make anywhere near enough consoles out of the gate. All of this justifies what I've been saying for months leading up to the launch of these consoles: Availability is the #1 most important thing for any new console launch.

Personal gaming update

I know that it's just a multiplatform, cross-gen game and it's not necessarily revolutionary, but I think too many people are passing on Need for Speed: Rivals. The game is fun. And given the lack of super compelling titles for either the PS4 or Xbox One out of the gate, shouldn't we be welcoming such titles? As for Contrast, it's too bad that such an excellent concept is mired beneath a mediocre technical presentation. The control is just silly loose. However, I still urge those who really love the idea to give it a try. At the very least, it is fresh and new.

Next on the PS4 review agenda is Resogun and FIFA 14, and I have to remember that Gran Turismo 6 is only a couple weeks away. These massive games are just plain painful when you're trying to do a ton of reviews. :(

I will also patiently await The Last Guardian, as I have for the last couple of years.

It is pretty lame that we never saw the Last Guardian release on PS3. It would have been a very unique title to add to the list of already great exclusives. Has it been confirmed yet that it's coming to PS4 or is it still up in the air? If they haven't announced anything yet they should release it for PS4.

I haven't seen a single store with either console in stock. It is concerning to me that they are having reliability issues. It's curbing my enthusiasm to get one sooner rather than later. I was considering waiting until inFamous comes out but I may just wait until MGS5 is released. Just to give them time to work out any issues that may be caught from now until then.

Oh it's all about Super Mario 3D World. Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS was my favorite 3D Mario so naturally i would love 3D World. The game is absolutely gorgeous. Nintendo really should have gone HD along time ago. Their art design and vivid colors really are a sight to see in HD on a big screen. Especially when running at 60fps. SM3DW is going to have to keep me busy until Christmas. My wife is holding onto my Zelda 3DS XL until then so A Link Between Worlds is going to have to wait. If I feel the need to move onto something else I suppose I could get GT6 or Wonderful 101 while I wait.

I highly recommend tearaway. One of the best platformers I have played in a long time. Id say even better than mario since how original it is. Never played anything quite like it.

The Last Guardian could be amazing! Hopefully the control and camera won't be an issue like the last two.
PGU: No PS4 for me. I'll wait for Xmass. Binary Domain is free on PS+. It's actually alright. It's a Criwear game for sure and has a lot of Vanquishy feel to it. It's not as great as Vanquish, but a decent shooter. The story might have hope, but the acting is just embarrassing. KZ:M is still great. Wish Shadow Fall had some better reviews. Sounds like there is less rail shooting which I would like. The dumber than expected AI is a bummer, but chances are I'll love the game when do I pick it up. Shadow Fall and Watchdogs would be a nice combo.

I'll wait for The Last Guardian for as long as it takes. The pedigree of the studio is reason enough to retain hope. That being said... the sooner the better, and I'd just like a real status update on the project.

Personal Update:
Been playing R&C: Nexus for most of this past week. It's brilliant fun, but showing its age. The platforming ideas are the best that Insomniac has ever offered, but the combat feels a bit tired and the boss battles in particular feel as though they've come fresh from the early 2000's. A great game for fans, though. Gone through it twice already and started a third game on Legendary difficulty Challenge Mode, but I think I'm gonna put it aside now to go back to Beyond and start a new game to see how it changes things (didn't finish it the first time).
My reading of Don Quixote has been fairly slow, but it is a wonderful novel and I really like the way that it's an early 17th century novel that employs metafiction. So unexpected.
Similarly, my writing progress has slowed considerably, which is a grave personal disappointment. I always have trouble keeping up my enthusiasm for a project as time passes, but I really thought I'd be able to keep it going this time.
I've also been helping a good mate of mine to concept a game, which has been a really interesting experience. Not sure where we're going to go with it as yet.. but yeah.

I look forward to the Last Guardian whenever it arrives.
I just think it's too bad the studio dragged it's feet on this one where it seems to me they could've had that and it's sequel or another original title of similar scale during the PS3's prime time. Oh well.

I'm just waiting for the NEW current-gen consoles, PS4, XO, and Wii U, to pile up the games.
Right now the list of announced, or soft announced, like alluded to, must play games looks like this for me.
PS4: Infamous, Uncharted, Gran Turismo 7, and I can expect a GoW, right? So that's 4 games for PS4.
XO: Killer Instinct and Halo. 2 games
Wii U: The new Mario 3D World game. Zelda Windwaker, the eventual REAL Zelda Wii U game. Mario Kart. Bayonetta 2. The Xeno JRPG. I suppose I can expect at least one Metroid title for Wii U here soon. 7 games.
I'll see how this list changes one year from now. btw, my PC is my multi-plat center piece so those don't really count for nothing on a console.

EDIT:
Been playing DOA5 U some more and really enjoying Crysis 3 on a second playthrough on Hard. It's so awesome.

Haha, when ever you mention DOA5 U I always think Wii U.

The Platinum dude wants Bayonetta 1 ported to Wii U. He says it's up to Nintendo. So maybe that will happen. Also Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze and Smash Bros will be out eventually. I'm getting that X JRPG for sure. It looks pretty sick.

I'm getting pretty excited for the eventual Wii U Zelda. Eji Aomuna said they're changing it up a bit and to look for their new direction in A Link Between Worlds for hints of where they're going. So far it's pulling in some pretty good reviews and being praised for its changes.

It should be. Every game I own on the Wii U supports off TV play except ZombiU because the second screen is heavily used for important gameplay features. It's pretty sick too because you can use the Wiimote for games that support it like Pikmin 3, Blops 2 and Wii games when playing on the game pad.

Happy to wait until they fix all the little bits and pieces and for a price drop before going for a PS4.

Just been through Beyond: Two Souls and have to say I loved it. If you go with the story it is really a top notch production. A couple of the sections dragged a bit but I was very impressed. Going to go through it again to see if I can get a few different outcomes. The graphics were immense. Ellen Page was amazing.
Heavy Rain had me more emotional but the production values in Beyond: Two Souls were outstanding.

Apart from that its Killzone: Mercenary. Still hooked on the multiplayer. Hope they give us some new maps down the track though. Looking forward to Tearaway.

really couldnt care less about TLG.
simply because, well, 1 games in development hell for this long never turn out well, and 2 by this time expectations are through the frigging roof!
i wish they would hurry up and get it out, or announce its canned, and just give us a ico sequel!
such a shame we havent seen many games like that, it really had such a engaging concept.
the little indie brother title is probably one of the best indie titles weve seen all gen!
you see it relatively often with indie titles, but never with big budget ambitious releases which is such a shame.
just makes me wonder why so many of japan studios key men have left, i mean what did $ony do to piss off so many people?

saving some, destroying others.
its nice to see next gen systems selling so well, especially after the doom and gloom talks of game specific devices being dead.
but i wish publishers would learn how to time their releases properly!
i mean next gen systems release in late november, when we already have had 100 games release in the past month we havent finished.
hell even ninty has the gall to release super mario 3D world, the most anticipated wiiu title since its launch, a day after the ps4 releases!
WTF!?
was so looking forward to playing that, but now at this rate im not going to be playing it till middle of next year!
so does that mean i should sell my wiiu since i havent touched it for months, and wont again till mid next year?
for f*cks sake weve had months of jack sh*t coming out, and now next gen systems release, thats when they decide to release their games.
seriously?
why do we constantly have to go through months with nothing releasing, than all of a sudden everything all at once!

next gen disappointment keeps continuing.
i cant help but shake the feeling that games have been seriously downgraded since their E3 showings!
i mean ryse now that im playing it looks NO WHERE NEAR as good as what it did at PAX in july, and nor does forza 5.
funny enough the only game that actually looks better is DR3.
same goes for ps4 launches, i mean KZSF at the EB expo looked no where near as good as it did at E3, nor did ACIV, and nor did driveclub or infamous second son.
im getting such a strong sense of KZ2 E3 2006 syndrome, the games showed off and knocks everyones socks off, than when it finally does release, everyones left saying WTF!?
yea there launch titles, but thats no excuse for them looking worse at release, than they did 6 months earlier at their announcements.

I have it. Like Ben said, it's a fun game. Running from the police doesn't get old, especially when it's a human chasing you and not some computer AI. If you liked past installments, you'll like this one.

I think I had a similar reaction to The Last of Us. I got as far as meeting Bill and when I was working my way through the cemetery I was blindsided and instakilled by a clicker and that was one time too many. The disc went back in the case, the case went onto the shelf and I haven't been able to bring myself to play it since. I'll probably return to it at some point but it;s not an idea that I have much enthusiasm for.

I have no idea how I feel about The Last Guardian. I just dont anymore.

I love my PS4. It makes gaming so much better, easier and enjoyable. I got to say that I kind of feel bad about all the times I talked bad about cross game chat. Not that I ever said it was dumb, and I certainly believe it doesnt make a console better, but last night I had to wait for an update in BF4 (which didnt fix much and was 600mb) and two buddies were playing. We created a chat session and I played Resogun while I waited and we chatted it up. It is pretty convenient

I dont agree one bit with reviews for Killzone, not the Metascore anyways. I tend to agree for the most part with anything above an 8. Some stuff still blows my mind about what they are sayinh though, even some high scores sounds like they didnt play it much. Regardless I cant believe how much better it looks than BF4. Everything is crisp, clear, has tons of detail and dimensional. BF4 looks great up close and the effects are cool but in the distance it gets ugly, like really ugly where there is no detail in the mountain at all as an example.

Thats what Ive been doing. Playing KZ and BF4 and both are pretty excellent. BF4 is pretty good, and the mp is very big for lack of a better word. I finished up Assasins Creed 3 so now I can start on 4.

AC3 was great until the end. Now im just like, what?

I have no particular interest in or animus against The Last Guardian but Sony really needs to come clean on this game. It's been in development since about the time of the PS3 launch window and we still don't know as we could expect for a title that been in production for that long. They need to stop teasing it and releasing trickles of information and announce a firm release date.
Apologies are well and good, but at this point your audience deserves more. As Ben points out, we need more than shooters and I'd argue that if we're to have shooters then we need developers to start looking at how they can mix them up and evolve the genre. This is the start of a new generation and it's a time to go out on a limb and shake things up while gamers are receptive to new things.
