Ben's Week In Review: December 1

We've been talking a lot about the PlayStation 4, so let's shift gears just a bit.

I swore I'd never again be drawn into the trap

As time goes on, I find myself not even thinking about Final Fantasy. Any time news shows up pertaining to that series, I tend to gloss over it, mostly because I'll know I don't want to read it. Plus, I don't want to fall into the trap again.

The trap of which I speak is follows: Whenever I see painfully clear signs that prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that FF is indeed a shadow of its former glorious self, I attempt to understand Square Enix's side of things. But I never can. It just seems so illogical and irrational from every feasible point of view, including the business side. I hate falling into that trap and yet, here I am again, thanks to the early Japanese sales numbers for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

Numbers-wise, it couldn't be clearer. 3 million for FFXIII when there were a very small number of PS3s in Japan; in fact, I think there were only like 6 or 7 million PS3s in Japan at the time, which meant that a ridiculous 1 in every 2 PS3 owners bought that game. That's an insane ratio, by the way. FFXIII-2 dropped to half that number. Lightning Returns falls to under 300,000. And yet, we see evidence from FFXV moving forward that in fact, Square Enix will continue down this same path. Can anyone figure this out? I'm willing to listen to any explanation at this point.

Sony on the Vita's reputation

SCE UK Managing Director Fergal Gara was quoted as saying that the PlayStation Vita is a very much loved and much respected machine." I believe that's an accurate but incomplete statement. It's accurate because I honestly believe that the overwhelming majority of Vita owners will leap to that unit's defense. They may claim the software - particularly the exclusive software - is lacking, and they'd be right, but they still love it. I don't see that many used Vitas at GameStops, do you? Granted, they haven't sold anywhere near well enough but of those who took the plunge, I think a very high percentage does not regret the purchase. I certainly don't. It is indeed a great complement to the PS4, and it's perfect if you've got a lot of time to kill when out and about.

However, it's incomplete because he's really only referring to owners. I don't think he's including everyone who doesn't own one; if you don't own the Vita yet, it's because you don't want it. Hence, how could they "love" it or even "respect" it? The problem is spreading that love and respect around, which is where Sony has been falling flat. I haven't seen much in the way of Vita promotion, unless it's somehow tied to the PS4. Using the PS4 as a late-coming Trojan Horse to get the hanheld into more homes just seems desperate. Bring us the games and many more consumers will respond to the inherent awesomeness of that unit.

Personal gaming update

Speaking of the Vita, if you own one and you haven't tried Tearaway yet, you're definitely missing out. So much fun! My favorite title to date, in fact. I still have to deliver Resogun and FIFA 14 reviews, and now there's Skylanders: SWAP Force sitting here as well. Man, tell me that's not a super huge racket for Activision... It was a brilliant idea to sell physical versions of new video game characters, it really was. Monetizing unlockable characters and tapping into the lucrative toy market at the same time? How could it not earn billions? And don't forget that the games aren't half bad, either. Not necessarily my cup of tea but I'm not 8 years old anymore, either.

I have to try to find a way to finish GTAV before Gran Turismo 6 gets here next week. After that game, though, I'll finally have some free time to play and complete a bunch of games that had to be moved to the back burner during the PS4 craziness. Lastly, I never got the appeal of that Twitch functionality, anyway, but I'm not surprised in the least that people couldn't control themselves. Just sad.

My guess is that the team behind FF just sort of follows whatever they feel like creating without thinking too much as to why sales are down. Where they possibly attribute the lower sales with the fall of japanese software leadership and adjusting to an us/euro driven gaming economy but not attributing any of that to what they themselves are doing with the franchise.

The Vita is everything I bought it for, and that's a good thing.

PGU: I decided to renew my PS+ subscription for $30. That's a price I can agree with at a yearly interval. I assume there'll be similar Black Friday deals for PS+ for some time to come.

I've been all over the map in gaming this week. I've spent time with WipEout 2048, DOA5, Tearaway demo (very awesome), NG3 RE, and Runner 2.

Runner 2 is a fun music-rhythm-platformer that's quite addictive. I like it. Every gamer should give it 15 min to see how they like it.

NG3 RE is nothing but mixed feelings. Yes, it's better than NG3 but it's still NG3, just remixed to be less crappy. But it's still crappier then either of it's predecessors. I like what they did with mixing up the ever precarious-to-mess-with combat system. It still feels like NG-style combat but with a twist that works. But pretty much everything else is disappointing. btw, I already played through the game before I was just revisiting it.

too late. I tried it. I tried fighting a dragon and got my heart torn out and eaten. Then after recovering from that I walked around town. A dude fell from out of the sky to help me walk somewhere beyond the city gates. We then saved a roadside peddler from angry goblins and found a hunk of ore sitting there.

sweet game =p

There is no unified theory of behavior that explains why Square Enix is willfully destroying the greatest franchise in gaming history. Nothing covers all of the bases. They don't get it and they don't give a damn about fans or sales or success. I've never seen anything like it.

The Vita is not respected by the press or prospective customers, which is something you kind of need.

I caught a so-called "superbug" (the kind that can kill you) and have been either at home or the doctors lately, so I've had plenty of time to game but no energy to write for you folks. I just recently made some acquisitions for the end of the generation. I got the Killer Is Dead LE, Atelier Ayesha, and Trinity Universe.

To be honest, I am just waiting for The XIII series to be over now. I enjoyed XIII but for me ever since it was sequelised. It just has gone utterly haywire. I look at Lightning Returns and see nothing that reflects Final Fantasy. Lightning now being this God with these abilities to warp time in a poorly implemented action farm with silly costume gimmicks... Just doesn't seem appealing at all. I'll probably still buy it just to conclude it for good, it's still one of the biggest PS3 titles of 2014.

As for XV, I don't think it is falling into the same trap as XIII. You appear to have a party still and the characters all seem varied. The action based combat with menus does not bother me, I love Kingdom Hearts combat system and it seems more similar to it than Lightning Returns - You can use the d-dap in LR but it barely. Over Lightning in battle while this seems to have no battle transition and you can run with the d-pad. The art direction, story and characters still look very appealing and I am not counting it out yet, I'm just not holding my breath on its release gien the projects track record.

I have no interest in the Vita, portable gaming just isn't for me, even when out I would rather read or draw than play a game. I most play my PSP or DS in bed. I'm hoping that well eventually get the Vita TV, it might make games like Tearaway inaccessible, but playing it on the big screen is more benefitL to me, if it upscales PSP games I'm sold, to the point where I will buy my PSP games digitally again, I didn't touch Peace Walker until the PS3 HD edition.

Ima get Final Fantasy 14 just because I'm not expecting it to be a true Final Fantasy but something else. It looks loads better than 13 1,2 and 3. Lightening is worthless unless you're playing Dissidia. Not expecting much from Square anymore. They're just a shell of their former selves.

The Vita really is a great device but it lacks games!!! This is true. Tearaway is a nice little title but with only 5 hours of game play, it's a game I can wait on. I do like the printable characters though. Pretty cool. That's something I suspect I'll play with especially with my kids.

PGU: Still playing SM3DW. Man this game is packed with content. There are a ton of levels to play. A lot of collectables that are challenging to get. Still have one more world to unlock and I've already put probably over 30 hours into it. When I'm done with this I think I'll try and tackle ZombiU again. Got side tracked when I first picked up that game. It's a little clunky but it makes interesting use of the gamepad.

Hey, if they called Final Fantasy XV anything besides "Final Fantasy," I'd probably be interested. It's the fact that they're trying to claim it's a FF game that bothers me.

If you want to make an action game with flashy graphics, I won't tell any developer they're not allowed to do it. Metal Gear Rising turned out good, right? It's just that Kojima and Co. made it very plain right off the bat that it was a SPIN-OFF and not an actual franchise installment. And while MGSV has an open-world element, it will certainly maintain its core mechanic that all the fans want: STEALTH.

If FF had maintained its role-playing core, which it has not in my estimation, this wouldn't be an issue. All games have to evolve. They all have to adapt and grow. But they're not supposed to CHANGE. Devil May Cry should never be an RPG, IMO; Resident Evil should always be survival/horror, and Final Fantasy should have a role-playing core. That's all.

I have faith in FF15. It looks exactly what I wanted from a ps3 Final Fantasy. Something cool, dark and fun to play.

Now I re-played something I got a lot of hate for dissing last year. I had bought Dishonored on my pc because I wanted to see what was so great about pc versions of games and so Dishonored was one of those games i tried. I didnt like it because it was easy and I couldn't connect to it. My girlfriend bought it last week on my ps3 for my birthday, and not only did I completely get into the game, It's one of the greatest stealth games I've ever played. I am very sorry to Arkane for insulting such an incredible masterpiece.

I would also like to mention that Emily is a far better character than Clementine in every single way. If any game should have gotten GOTY last year, it was Dishonored. Not much I can say, just...wow. Never again will I judge a game until I play it on console. I can't get over how I insulted it. I'm so ashamed.

Took a break from the ps4. Aside from Dishonored, I've been playing civilization 5. Bought the Gods and Kings dlc finally and civ5 feels like an entirely new game. I really hope they bring this series to the ps4 so I can goad my non-pc friends into getting it. I know most of the people here do not like RTS's but I love strategy, like, real strategy. Warcraft 3 was alright, but nothing compares to civ's strats. You can't muscle your victories, you have to plan accordingly. I planned out 55 turns to kill the other two human players and It worked out. One rage quit while the other said GG.

Anyways, Dishonored is soooo good. And I know FFXV isn't turn based, but it looks a hell of a lot more Final Fantasy-ish than anything 13 has been. Thats due to the directors of said games. Whats his name clearly lost his mind, while Nomura kept his. Onto some other rushed stuff, GT6 next week. So excited. Also also, gtao is completely broken now. Its a complete grind fest. It feels like I'm playing white knight chronicles all over again.

Hope everyone had a great thanksgiving.

The Vita is currently the only exclusive gaming device I own, and I agree with your assessment. I love it, but I wish I had more options. Give me an InFamous, Bioshock, and some RPGs for the Vita and I'll be all set. Also, a reminder -- All of the PSP Ys games are half off on the PSN. On Square-Enix: They've lost their minds. Somehow, their Japanese arm went from being one of the best and most consistent developers/publishers going to one of the worst, while they picked up Eidos and did some amazing things on that front. As I think about it, I do come to wonder what those running the company must be thinking. FFXII sold 6 million copies in its lifetime, and FFX sold 8 million. XIII started off with solid figures (7 million across both platforms), but the sequel sold poorly and the third iteration worse still (thus far). It doesn't take a genius to figure that what they're currently doing is wrong...

Maybe they don't fully understand what they're doing, though? Maybe, to them, what they've done with the Lightning Saga is some kind of logical evolution of the FFs of yore. I don't really see how that's feasible considering the lack of an overworld, lack of party, lack of freedom and much else besides... but just maybe. Or maybe, in recent years, they've seen the success of the likes of Mass Effect, Dark Souls and Skyrim, and comparing it to JRPGs, like Ni no Kuni and Hyperdimension Neptunia and misinterpreting it that the former is the type of RPG that people want exclusively these days. It's pretty clear that that is the direction that the XIII trilogy has taken. Then with XV, they're trying to fuse that with more traditional ideas, like the party system and reinstating the on-field enemies as in XII.

Man... Why you make me think about such confusing topics?

Yeah, I'd love to get a Vita, but I just can't justify it with my time constraints. The only time I'd really have to play it would be the commute to work, but I prefer to read then anyway. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to play Tearaway, LBP Vita and Gravity Rush. From what I've heard they're all remarkably unique games and that, more than aught else, is what I'm after in my games these days. But yeah. I respect the handheld for what it is; I just don't really see how Sony is going to change its fortunes around.

Personal Update:
Finished Beyond. That was incredible. I was going to go through it again this weekend but ended up being too busy yesterday and not really wanting to try to do it all in a day today. I intend to do it next weekend, though. In the meantime, I finished off my third playthrough of Ratchet: Nexus, getting all of the weapons up to level 6 (the RYNO is an absolute beast when fully upgraded. Took out the final boss before running out of ammo on the Legendary difficulty of Challenge Mode) and basically finishing off everything that I wanted to with the game. It may be short, but that just makes it all the sharper and it truly is a joy to play most of the time. So then I picked up GT5 again. Starting from scratch and I think I've fallen in love all over again. Just driving feels so great and even though I've only got a low-end wheel it is just so damn enjoyable. B-Spec mode is still annoying, though. Then again, it should be, I am playing it as it was when originally released.
Finished reading Don Quixote. Thought the ending was a bit of a cop-out, but I'm not going to hold that against it. It was an incredible novel; funny, charming, poignant and featuring some of the best characters and scenes that I've read to date. It's easy to see why it's so highly regarded. I've moved on to 'The Five People You Meet In Heaven' by Mitch Albom and it feels really sober and sombre so far, as I suppose it should considering that it follows what happens to the lead character after he dies. It's interesting thus far.
Aside from that, not got much done this week. Again, I just haven't really felt up to writing or working in general. Kinda sucks.
Peace.

PGU: Metro - Last Light

I'm a few hours in (@ my tempo, guess that means about one hour for others) and I gotta say that I really like it so far. It's so incredibly refreshing with a game that neither is set on US soil nor feature an all-american hero. Instead we get more toned down characters set in an interesting universe that's not all polarized.

Of course, being a huge fan of post-apocalyptic settings this game was almost bound to fetch some interest in me. But really, so far I think I will rate this game up amongst the best fully linear action games I've played so far.
Cause this game is definitely not about making decisions or shaping the story, it's about following it. But when the story interest you that's not so bad!

And the weapons are interesting, the maps offer good stealth opportunities, the enemies are diverse and some of them are quite uniquely creepy! And everything is wrapped in pretty good graphics and tons of atmosphere.
All in all this is a good shooter!

Metro is in a class of its own, you don't lose a step by choosing action or stealth it just feels natural either way. And I love the fact that you have to do things manually like pump your air gun, charge your flashlight, replace your air supply. And all those controller options just make it more realistically creepy in my opinion, when everything is automatic there's no immersion. Great game.

@World:
A class of its own. Strong words, but I agree. It does stand out from the crowd. It feels different, yet familiar in all the right ways. It's quick to get into but feels different when you play it. It has a certain soul.

Also, I think the voice actors are really good. Ok so the Russian accent may be a bit overdone, but apart from that I think the performances are good and the script likewise.
And that goes for the various banter and small-talk you can eavesdrop into. Good stuff, and contributes to the atmosphere.

@Jawk:
I run the Linux version and it does have some issues, but that's more due to it using an older version of OpenGL (I've seen a comparison with the Windows version, and you can sometimes spot a difference in how the surfaces reflect).

To be honest I usually don't even notice screen tearing so I'm really not the one to judge there but at least it's not very dominant. However it does have some moments with a slight drop in frame rate. But these are typically in the interactive cut scenes (or whatever we call the sequences where you basically just walk through an underground village with no option to attack or anything). Those can be real crowded and with lots of stuff going on behind windows and in cells and so forth.

But again - this is more likely due to it being the Linux port, it must also be said that the "regular" game sequences are rock solid on my GTX 680 card.

AI: I'd call it "typical shooter AI". They are pretty dumb, usually following their scripted paths and sticking their head out from the same two spots pretty rhythmic.
But yeah... I'd just call it "typical" shooter AI.

Something great happened yesterday.

I FINALLY GOT THE MULTIPLYER HERO TROPHY IN SUPER STARDUST HD!

Years of trying; 100s of failures; a perpetual feeling of pure ANGUISH! I always, always failed at the 4th planet...but not, on that day. The feeling when I saw that beautiful 10x multiplyer in the corner...one of my greatest gaming moments.

lol. I think the reason I failed so much was because I was always going for the highscore at the same time, and I refrained from using any bombs. When there's a billion shards of ice everywhere with 20 plasma projectiles zooming about...I don't think I had a chance to blink during the whole planet.

Also, another game I've been playing and have been trying to complete for years: Fallout 3. When you have the urge to look at everything, this game can be a real trawl. I bought it in 2010 for christ's sake lol. Also, it feels super archaic to suspend belief a lot of the time.

If the game had better visual fidelity, restraints on how much you can carry (having 300 stimpacks takes out all and any challenge) and if the combat wasn't as weak as it is, it could be so much greater. Can love it for what it is though.

(I'm kinda living in the past aren't I? What is the PS4 anyway? lol)

Fallout 3 is wicked short compared to something like Skyrim, you can complete all the quests inside of 100 hours. Remember it's not an FPS, it's an RPG, you're supposed to use VATS strategically. If you don't like being able to carry infinite supplies of some items try Fallout New Vegas, it has a super hardcore mode that's harder on you. Great game, I just wish it were bigger, which is why I'm dyin for Fallout 4.

Yeah, I'm not an RPG person so I can't really appreciate that side of the combat. I mean, what's more strategic than shooting someone in the head!? lol. Pumping 10-20 bullets into someone with no reaction seems silly in a game that is faiiiiirly well grounded, RPG or not.

What I really love about Fallout 3 is how the character interaction works. It teaches you that getting everyone's point of view can give you better options, and some information you can gain by doing so might even change your initial decision. And that while the 'bad' decision is always more interesting, doing the 'good' decision works out better in the long run. Which is pretty cool. I'd be an absolute sweetheart if I didn't steal people's stuff behind there back :p

And I love how drastically different playthroughs can be, and how the world can change depending on your decisions (that aren't always black or white). And all the optional stuff like reading terminals or looking at the history of a place and how all the items there tell a story of what happened. Reminds me of how TLOU builds atmosphere too, which is as big a compliment as you can get from me, lol.

It's rare, but when all the best bits of Fallout 3 work together, it's a great showcase for open world design format for storytelling.

Fallout 3 has bugs, but even with the bugs, its number 1 of all games for me,than miles nothing and then the rest.
Strange,at first i didn't interest me much, also i had the game for more than a year lying there, and then when i tried it after some hours it got a grip on me,man

Hard to believe there was a time when anything Final Fantasy related was crazy important news.

PGU: Made good use of black friday. Bioshock infinite, Farcry 3 for the PC and a 30$ PS+ subscription! I like Soul Sacrifice, but I'm not very good at. May need to level grind and micro mange the crap out of it. I think it's structured that way.

It's true. I remember a time when if FF news popped up, you'd get 100+ comments. Now there's a resounding "meh" echoing throughout the internet.

Why Lightning? If they were going to become fixated on an FFXIII character then why not Fang?
