You can also roll in closer or further away from your * * opponent. * * * ******************************************************************************* .----------------. | 2.2 Basic Tips | `----------------' Let me touch upon a few things you should know before your first match. Grappling ========= Grappling is the main way to inflict damage on an opponent. There are two ways to grapple an opponnet, Weak and Strong (or Soft and Hard). The weaker grapple gives you access to moves that aren't the strongest, but they are tough to reverse. These are what you should use for the beginning of every match. To utilize these, just tap X to engage a weak grapple. The strong grapple gives you access to the strong moves that cause the most pain on your opponent. You should only use these once you are fairly far into the match and you have the advantage. Otherwise, the moves will just get reversed, putting you at an even greater disadvantage. Striking ======== Striking is a very good way to bide time in a match. If you hit your opponent, you might send them into a temporary daze, giving you an opportunity to do a damaging move on them. It's also a quick way to chip away at their health. Turnbuckle ========== The turnbuckle is a feature that should be used sparingly. VERY sparingly. The turnbuckle can get the fans into it and put a big hurt on your opponent, but it can also be very hurtful to your character. If the opponent happens to move, and you jump, then you are face down on the mat and very vulnerable. If you are at a point in the match that you need to finish off an opponent, or able to take a risk like this, then you should. Reversals ========= Reversals are what make this game very unpredictable. Anything from a grapple to a strike can be reversed, so you need to be careful. If an opponent has high health or high momentum, then it's sensible to not try and do anything heavy on him, or you might get the move reversed. On the other hand, you can try and reverse moves of your opponent whenever they try a grapple of strike. Blocking or dodging grapples and strikes is also a very effective way to subdue your opponent, putting him in an awkward position and very vulnerable. Momentum ======== Your momentum meter (the one above your health meter) is what indicates how much momentum you have going for you in the match. If you do a move on an opponent, then your bar will raise. If it starts flashing, hit the right analog stick to do a taunt, enabling "Blazin'" mode. Whilst in Blazin' Mode, you can do your special moves by moving the right analong stick while you are in a grapple. Momentum can also be raised by taunts, making this an effective tool in a Handicap match. If you taunt and taunt and taunt, your momentum bar will go up and you will be in "Blazin'" mode in no time. Also, variety in your moves will boost the momentum bar, so be sure to mix it up when you're out there. Out of the Ring =============== If the battle sprawls out of the ring, then you will be free of the annoying Rope Break. However, you cannot pin an opponent outside of the ring. You see the predicament. Knockouts ========= To knock your opponent out (referred to as a KO), simply execute your Blazin' move against someone while they're health meter says "Danger!" This will end the match no matter where you are (and it's an easy way to end a Handicap match). .-----------------------------------------------------------------------------. | - > Before You Start < - | `-----------------------------------------------------------------------------' Here is everything you should explore and become familiar with before you actually fight for the first time. .---------------------. | 3.1 Menu Navigation | `---------------------' Story Mode ========== This is where you take a fighter who has been kicked out of the circuit, and try and take him to the top. You will meet new people along the way, unlocking new characters and venues along the way. Battle ====== Up to 4 players duke it out in a match of your choice. There are 4 different match types; Singles, Free for All, Tag Team, and Handicap. Survival ======== Run the gamut, seeing how many fighters you can eliminate before you yourself are gone. This will earn you quite a bit of money if you get far. Tutorial ======== Learn the basics of the game, separated into 10 different sections. Galleries ========= See pictures of the women of Def Jam Vendetta (you have to unlock these in Story Mode). Options ======= Tweak portions of the game to your liking. Alter things from sound to the difficulty (granted there aren't many things to change). High Scores =========== See the High Scores list for Def Jam Vendetta, the top scorers in 8 different categories. Compete hard enough, and you'll see your name up here in no time at all! .-----------------. | 3.2 Match Types | `-----------------' Singles ======= Go one-on-one with a fighter of your choice. This is just a regular match, first to one fall wins the match. Doing a few of these is a very easy way to get some quick cash. Any match that you use your User ID for, you have a chance to get money towards Story Mode. Free for All ============ Select four people and take it to the ring. Last man standing wins the match, so it'll be a grueling match played on Normal difficulty. Standard KO, pin or submission eliminates a person. This match will be a tough one to win, be warned. Tag Team ======== My least favorite match type, the Tag Team match. This is where you and a partner take on another duo in a match. The first fall ends the match, which means you have to be on your feet at all times. You can't let a surprise fall slip in. The really bad thing about this is the view is awful. It's just a fixed camera on one side of the ring. So if the action goes behind the man standing on the apron, you will have a hard time seeing the match. Handicap ======== This is the toughest one to get points in, especially in a 3 on 1 match. Even if you choose to be on the advantageous side, your teammates will be vicious and unrelenting in beating the living crap out of the opponent making it harder to get moves in. If you try and take on 3 opponents, be sure that you are ready for it, or else you'll get smoked. A single fall ends the match, so if you're by yourself, you should pin someone really quick before someone can break it up, giving you an easy win. .------------. | 3.3 Venues | `------------' These are the venues in which you can fight. The first three are ones that are available from the beginning. The Face Club ============= A club run by Scarface inside of what looks like an empty warehouse. This is where you start off in Story Mode. Sanctuary ========= An arena in a Church (hence the name), dimly lit and and large chandelier hanging above the ring. You will fight in this venue about halfway through Story Mode. Da Bridge ========= Run by Redman and Methodman, Da Bridge is basically a ring setup that's located under a few bridges. Don't read ahead if you don't want to know how things turn out! Dont' say I didn't warn you.... WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW For the Walkthough of Story Mode, I will use Briggs to explain things. Keep in mind that Story Mode is the same no matter who you use, so don't be confused. Also note, my difficulty setting is my opinion, and my opinion only. Don't take it too serious, it's just to give you a general idea. It's set out of 10, 1 being the easiest, 10 being, well, D-Mob. To start off Story Mode, you get a message from your homie Manny says "In too deep. Need your fists." You make your way down to The Face Club, a fight club located in an urban setting. You show up and are treated with hostility by the bouncers (Deebo and Omar). Manny comes over and tells them that you're fighting for him tonight. Manny apparently suffered an arm injury, and needs money to pay back D-Mob (the underground fight circuit boss, and a bitter rival of yours for reasons that you'll discover later). He takes you to the ring, where you will face your first opponent. ---------------------- Venue 1: The Face Club ====================== The Face Club, run by Scarface, is the first place where you will have the chance to beat on the easiest opponents that you will face in the game. If it's your first time through, then these might be pretty tough for you. If it's your second, third or fourth way through, then it's just routine. Opponent 1: Peewee Difficulty: 1 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Ż Your very first opponent is against a short, clumsy, fat guy named Peewee. He's powerful, but his defense is incredibly weak. To get rid of this guy, start with strikes and weak grapples, then work your way up to the strong grapple moves and strong strikes. Go for the KO against him, you might as well because you'll earn more money. Once you beat Peewee, you are taken to the menu where you can toughen up your character (money for attributes), go on to the next match, and exit Story Mode. You don't use money for anything else (except unlocking pictures of women, which aren't that great), so go ahead and strengthen your character up a little before your next match against Drake. Opponent 2: Drake Difficulty: 2 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Ż Drake fights dirty, plain and simple. This match will be a big step up from the previous one with Peewee. Drake isn't as tough as he may seem, because his only strengths are power and speed. The other 4 categories (grappling, defense, stamina and charisma) are alarmingly low. You may have trouble with his speed, but you can handle this by using grapple moves early and often. Beat Drake, and you will be put up in a match against Scarface, owner of The Face Club. Toughen your character up some more before this match (try evening out the categories as much as possible, so your character is well rounded). The Face Club - Boss: Scarface Difficulty: 4 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Ż Scarface is a heavyweight (to say the least), and much better than your previous opponents. He is powerful and good at grappling, but his speed is nonexistent. His defense is mediocre, but you can easily defeat him with a series of strikes and grapples. He will reverse more moves than the previous opponent's, but don't get frustrated or give up soon. When it's time to put him away, go for the KO so you get paid more. After you defeat Scarface, you see a cutscene where you approach Manny and he starts talking. Soon after, your first Girlfriend, Deja, comes up to you and compliments you. You don't pay attention, for you see Angel, an ex-girlfriend stolen by D-Mob, walk by. You exchange dirty looks and Angel walks over to D-Mob, notifying him of your prescence. He looks up at you, and grins. You will see "The Ladder," and you'll be able to choose between 4 wrestlers. You'll have to wrestle them all eventually, so it doesn't matter which order you go in. ---------------------- Venue 2: The Warehouse ====================== Choice 1: Sketch Difficulty: 3 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Ż Sketch is a little....out there, if you will. Marked with body paint on his chest and a weird hair-do, Sketch will be the easiest to beat out of these four. His defense is almost nonexistent, but he has stamina and charisma to take into consideration. The easiest way to defeat Sketch is to use his defense (or lack thereof) to your advantage, and use submission moves as often as you can. He doesn't stay down for long, so you'll have to give him quite a beating before he finally gives. He's powerful, but has no charisma whatsoever, so use the crowd to your advantage. Do taunts and combos to please the crowd, and use submission moves to keep Ruffneck subdued. Ruffneck can be tough your first time because he has excellent stamina, but it shouldn't take you more than two tries to beat him. After you beat your second opponent, T'ai Monique will approach you and show some interest in you. Deja will come over and a brief confrontation will occur. After that, you'll have to choose whom you wish to control for a match (who you want as your girlfriend). If you win with that person, you open up part of their gallery, so choose wisely. At 6'10", he's the biggest out of the bunch that you'll have to face. He is surprisingly fast for his size, and is powerful. However, his defense is disgraceful, so be sure to take advantage of his weakness. Work on a body part, and he'll submit in no time at all. If you try a KO or pin, then you may find yourself beaten down severely. So, you should definitely try to make him tap. Don't let him get up, or it might be the end of you. Use grapples over and over again until he finally is defeated, and you will earn yourself a shot at N.O.R.E. Pretty much stacked in all categories (except he's mediocre in Speed and Grappling), you will certainly have your hands full while when fighting N.O.R.E. Be very careful, for N.O.R.E. has Power AND Charisma, meaning he'll get his Blazin' meter up in a heart beat. Use grapples moves often to decimate N.O.R.E. and unlock Grimeyville. After beating N.O.R.E., Opal approaches you showing interest. Once again, you must choose who you want to keep. You get another message from Manny, saying you have a tag team match. If you haven't done it lately, be sure to spend your money upgrading your character's stats. You shouldn't have much trouble. You may find this first match a little difficult, because the camera can be hard to work with and you may find it tough seeing as the tag partner can always interfere. You will usually find your matches being more 2 on 2 rather than 1 on 1. All 4 men will be in the ring at the same time for the most part. This will make this new type of match sort of difficult to master on your first try. There's a new opponent, Zaheer. He is powerful and is great at grappling, but he has no speed whatsoever. Use running strikes to use his slowness to your advantage. Zaheer also has very weak defense, so be sure to use strikes and weak grapples to beat him down little by little. Taunt often too, because he has no charisma, so it'd be best of you to gain the crowd's acceptance. The last piece of advice I can give on Zaheer is to keep the match as short as possible. Zaheer's stamina will most likely be better than yours at this point in Story Mode, so he'll outlast you easily. Going for the KO in tag matches is always a good strategy. To beat Iceberg, just keep chipping away at his health and do not allow him to get Blazin' or do a Blazin' move on you. These guys are a bit tougher than Zaheer and Peewee, so don't think you'll be able to breeze through this match like the last one. Your strategy should still be to go for a K.O. on one of them. You start off as Manny, so I suggest that you tag in Briggs IMMEDIATELY after the match starts. If you've been upgrading Briggs constantly, this will make him a better fighter than Manny right now. This match isn't that tough, so you shouldn't have much trouble with it. Since you already know Sketch's strengths and weaknesses (if you don't, please refer to his match strategy), I'll breakdown Chukkelz's style of fighting. Chukklez is a very powerful opponent, and he excels in grappling too. This means that you probably don't want to try anything huge to start with, or he may reverse it and you'll be at a disadvantage for the rest of the match. Chukklez is also pretty quick, so you'll need to always be prepared for anything he'll do. He doesn't have terrific defense, so you may want to take advantage of that, and he also has poor stamina. So, as long as you can outlast him, you'll be fine. Taunt early and often to win over the crowd and gain momentum. Headache might be a little difficult for you, but it shouldn't take more than two attempts to beat him. 'Cris is very fast, and his defense is excellent, making him a tough one to beat. However, he does have his weaknesses. He is weak when it comes to power and not skilled at grappling at all. So the strategy for beating Luda is to do many powerful grapples against him to weaken him down, and perform your finishing move on him for a finishing touch to prove yourself. Ludacris will be a tough opponent to beat, so don't get frustrated if it takes you two or three times to finally defeat him. After you beat Ludacris, D-Mob comes out and makes a speech announcing the annual Def Jam tournament. He states that he will face the winner of the tournament, expressing his beliefs that no one is ready to take him. Manny suggests that Briggs just leave the beef alone before it gets too personal, but Briggs just shoves him away. All of his attributes are solid, and all of them are near perfect. The only one that isn't up to par with the others is speed, and as small of a weakness it is, you need to capitalize on it. Strike early and often with furious bursts and you'll weaken down Nyne to the point where you can defeat him. Beware, he's friggin' stacked, so don't try anything stupid against him or you'll get beat senseless. To easily defeat Nyne, use running attacks and running grapples. Even make use of top rope moves. Just as long as you stay away from him for the mots part, you'll be fine. If you decide to try and beat him face to face, you'll get a massive ass-whoopin'. After your first victory in The Dragon House, you must go back to Da Bridge for the Semi-Final match. If you are stuck facing Arii, however, take advantage of his lack of speed and charisma. Do many quick strikes and back away. Taunt as much as you can because Arii isn't very popular with the crowd. Don't let Arii get any combos, or you may find yourself doing this match over and over again. Masa is powerful, quick, and very good at grappling, making him a threat should you hit the mat. To make sure he doesn't make you cry uncle, keep the fight in the ring. This gives you a chance to get Rope Breaks, thus eliminating the threat of submission (for the most part). For either one's weaknesses, the other excels in that area, making them deadly to face together. Neither of them are really the easiest, but I'll still tell you how to beat them. Before I go on with the personal strategies, I have to say that you MUST TAG IN BRIGGS ONCE THE MATCH STARTS! Otherwise Manny will get decimated. Method Man is Powerful and charismatic, a good combination in this circuit. In fact, he is stacked in all areas except Speed. You know what that means...quick bursts of intense strikes until he can't take anymore. DO NOT let him string a few combos together, or you'll be done with because they will damage you greatly AND boost his Momentum bar tremendously. Meth is a tough one to beat, be warned. Redman is the definition of charisma. Anyone who's seen him in movies or on television will agree that Redman is a very charismatic person. Redman will get his Momentum bar up in a heart beat, so do not allow him to string combos together, or you might as well just restart the match. Redman is very weak in defense and grappling, so Powerful moves in the beginning of the match are possible and highly recommended. Use those two match strategies, and this match should be easier. Also, know in advance that Manny will act like an ass throughout the entire match. Get used to it. Then he sends you a message warning you to just leave the whole fighting scene. Suspicious? He gets angry, telling her that it's time to go home. --------------------- Venue 6: The Junkyard ===================== Bloodline Champion: DMX Difficulty: 9 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Ż DMX is the second toughest opponent that you'll face in the entire game. He is perfect in stamina and charisma and pretty damn close to perfection in power and speed. DMX has no weaknesses, so there's no real strategy against him, but I'll try and provide one. Start out slow, with strikes and weak grapples. Use running grapples and strikes to keep your distance while doing damage at the same time. Don't let him string combos together, or you'll be done for. When it's time, do a few major moves to get Blazin', and K.O. him. Trying to go for a pin or submission will allow him time to recover or reverse a move of yours, and you'll be decimated after all your hard work. So basically, you must compile all strategies together to beat DMX. Be prepared for a long match, because your moves have less of an impact on DMX than they do on normal fighters. If you beat DMX, the rest is a cake walk until D-Mob. Plus, you get (at least) a whopping $50 grand if you win the match. Now, you are the new Bloodline Champion. After this match, you get a message from Angel saying she needs to talk to you at The Face Club. _____________ ___/ The 2-Way \___________________________________________________________ / ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ 11:12 \ | From: angel@defjam.com | | To: briggs@defjam.com | | Su: I want to see you | | __________________________________________________________________ | | / \ | | | We need to talk. Meet me at The Face Club in one hour. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | \__________________________________________________________________/ | | | \_____________________________________________________________________________/ ---------------------------------- Venue 7: The Face Club After Hours ================================== Ambush: Pockets, House and Snowman Difficulty: 9 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Ż This match, while not as hard as some make it out to be, is a tough one. You are ambushed by Pockets, House and Snowman, D-Mob's henchmen. The purpose of this is to injure you so you can't participate in the Def Jam tournament. I'm not sure how this was arranged, though. Maybe D-Mob got a hold of Angel's 2-Way? Whatever, you're going to need to beat this match. The game recognizes your handicap, and gives you a certain edge of your own. You are able to perform many strong grapples in the early goings without many reversals. This makes the match so much easier if you know to use it. Now, none of them are really solid, so they won't be too tough individually. What you need to do is just do moves on each of them over and over again as if to protect yourself. Doing this over and over will eventually weaken one of them to the point where you can easily pin them. However, don't pin them. It's too risky, because one of the others could break it up, and then the person you pinned is up and your against two at once. Fight and fight and fight until one of them has a health meter that reads "Danger." Get a Blazin' and K.O. them to win the match. There are no rope breaks, so you may want to take advantage of that too. Occasionally, Pockets may run to the ring either to taunt or to mount a turnbuckle. If he does so, you better get out of his range or you'll get nailed. After you win, it shows you in the center of the ring, as the three of the goons leave. Your catching your breath, and Manny assaults you with a bat, knocking you out. This betrayal, supposedly a plot twist, was why Manny warned you to leave. --------------------------- Venue 8: Def Jam Tournament =========================== A cutscene shows the crowd getting riled up for the Def Jam Tourney, then shows D-Mob in his box seat with his henchmen, Manny and Angel. Angel's eyes search the crowd for Briggs, but she doesn't spot him. Suddenly, he walks out, much to the enjoyment of the crowd. D-Mob is shocked, as are the rest of his clique. Your first opponent in this tournament is Keith Murray. Opponent 1: Keith Murray Difficulty: 7 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Ż Keith Murray isn't especially difficult, for he isn't powerful or good at defense. This means you can use strong grapples fairly early in the match and your hard strikes most likely won't get reversed. Keith is, however, quick and charismatic. He'll put together a quick combo, and boost his Momentum bar greatly. Keith Murray shouldn't prove too difficult; just hit him with the tough grapples and hard strikes and he should push over fairly easy. Doing this establishes you as a force to be reckoned with in the tournament. During this tournament, you won't receive many 2-Way messages because both Manny and Angel are with D-Mob and they wouldn't want to anger him further. Opponent 2: Capone Difficulty: 8 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Ż Charismatic and quick, Capone will prove to be a bit tougher than Keith Murray. His stamina is also fabulous, so be sure to try and end it as quick as possible. Capone isn't very powerful, and he is awful at grappling and defense. This indicates that you can use strong grapples and strikes early without them being reversed all the time. Be sure to avoid his quickness, and slow him down with punches, kicks and grapples and you should do just fine with Capone. Should he start swinging, though, you will be caught in a hurricane of punches that will take a lot out of your character. Opponent 3: WC Difficulty: 7 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Ż WC is powerful, charismatic and last a long time. However, he is very slow, making him a target for strikes and especially combos. It's very easy to execute a few combos on WC, rendering him temporarily useless and giving you a tremendous boost to your Momentum bar. Should WC get you in a flurry of grapples or strikes (although they'll come slow, they'll do their damage), you might find yourself dropping one to him. WC is very slow, so you must use combos to get an easy win against him. Opponent 4: Ghostface Killah Difficulty: 9 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Ż Ghostface Killah is stacked, only lacking in Grappling. He's powerful, quick, charismatic and talented in defense and stamina. Use his inexperience of grapples against him early and often, hitting him with move after move after move until he's weakened enough and in Danger. Execute a K.O. to put him in his place and earn you a shot against D-Mob. ------------------------- Venue 9: Def Jam Vendetta ========================= D-Mob and his crew approach you on the ramp, and D-Mob talks a bunch of trash and threatens to kill you. Angel tells D-Mob that she no longer wants to be with him, and goes to Briggs. D-Mob is furious, so he pulls out a pistol to kill both you and Angel. However, Manny will not sit on the side for any longer. He jumps in the way, trying to grab D-Mob's pistol away from him. D-Mob turns the pistol into Manny's stomach and fires, to the crowd's shock. Briggs tackles D-Mob into the ring area to start the match. The Final Confrontation: D-Mob Difficulty: 10 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻ Briggs and D-Mob both start out on the ground to begin the match. Now, D-Mob is easily the toughest opponent in the entire game. Perfect in every category, he'll be the hardest to beat. Since this is an unsanctioned fight, there is no pinnings, only submissions and Knockouts. My suggestion, as always, is to go for the K.O. because it takes less time and there aren't as much risks as submission. My strategy for D-Mob is just about the same as for DMX. Compile all of your knowledge to defeat D-Mob once and for all. The one thing I can't stress enough is Combos. Use them, memorize them if you must. Combos make this match so much easier than it would be without them. Weak grapples seem like the way to go in the early goings of this match. These are hard to reverse and do a decent amount of damage. Plus, they gain you momentum and, if used in rapid succession, can leave an opponent subject to the stronger moves. Now, please realize that D-Mob WILL reverse many of your moves, on any difficulty setting. Prepare your self for the futility of your character in some points of the match and the unfair amount of moves that D-Mob will reverse. It's just the way it is, and you can't do much about it. Now, while I said not to try and defeat D-Mob by submission earlier, it is also crucial that you use submission moves as often as possible. Submission is the Anti-Momentum and does a lot of damage to D-Mob. Work on a certain area quick enough, and you may actually get a quick submission out of him. Once you defeat D-Mob, you walk off with Angel as the Police surround D-Mob. You also pass a paramedic tending to Manny. He looks at you with hope, and you glance at him giving him a grin, signifying that there are no hard feelings. The camera shows you walking off with Angel, then the credits roll. Congratulations! You have beaten Story Mode. You've unlocked just about everything by now, so enjoy the fruits of your labor. You've earned it.
