Sony talks about their new plans for gaming.

At a press conference, Sony Computer Entertainment announced their plans for the Sony PS2 Hard Drive, on how it will affect the way games are played and purchased. Sony also mentioned that them, Sega and Namco will have a little bond in the beginning of the year 2002. First let's kick it off with the hard drive. Sony is planning on launching their PS2 Hard Drive in July for the Japanese market, and have made it more than clear that plans for a US internal hard drive are definite as well. The Japanese HDD, that will be external and stand alongside of the PS2 will feature copyright protection that will forbid gamers to download movies, MP3s and anything that isn't exactly "legal". What it will allow gamers to do, is download PS2 game demos, and if the gamer is satisfied he/she can go to Sony's online store or any other supportive retailer, pay up for the game of choice and download it onto the massive 40GB hard drive. 40GB, shoot that is a brick load of storage space! If the internet era has taught us anything, I'm more than sure that patches of some sort will eventually surface so that gamers are allowed to download MP3s, so don't get discouraged quickly. We've already got mod-chips for the PS2, and we don't even 'need' mods for bootleg Dreamcast games.

Another of Sony's mentions was that they will incorporate PS2 technology into Sega's and Namco's arcade hardware so that they can use it to create arcade titles on. This PS2 technology will feature an enhanced Emotion Engine, more RAM power, and for some reason a built-in hard-drive. What this means is that Namco or Sega arcades running on PS2 hardware, will pretty much be exclusively or first released on the PS2, and seeing as how Sega and Namco are the number one and three arcade makers out there, only good things can come from this.
