PS2 breaks 10 million mark!

Despite what analysts and anti-Sony critics have said, Sony Computer Entertainment announced today that the Sony Playstation 2 Entertainment Console has broken the sales mark of 10 million units. The original expectations were that only 9 million would be shipped and sold by fiscal year 2001 which ends in March. The Playstation 2 has been released now for one year and three weeks, and has sold 10 million units worldwide. In its first two days the PS2 sold just over 980,000 units, in its first week the console toppled the 1 million mark in Japan that is. The story with the US version was different, even though the launch to some was a disaster (that was only to those who couldn't get one), I still found it incredibly successful. The US PS2 sold 500,000 units in one day! And 100,000 every single week! Sony had the same exact fiasco in Europe/Australia, with the PAL version of the Playstation 2. Currently the numbers are as follow:

Japan: 4.65 million units
North America: 2.76 million units
Europe/New Zealand/Australia: 2.63 million units

"We are pleased to announce that five months after the introduction of PlayStation 2 in North America the company is on target to meet the three million unit shipment projection for this market by March 31, the end of our fiscal year," said Kazuo Hirai, president and chief operating officer, Sony Computer Entertainment America, Inc. "Vigorous sales of PlayStation 2 hardware and software further demonstrate the mass market appeal of the PlayStation brand and illustrates the company's ongoing dominance in this highly competitive category."

As of today (3.22.01) the US PS2 has 73 games in its library, 28 of them were released in October alone and with the ability to play over 1,000 PSOne games on your PS2, it only gets better. Sony also announced that unit manufacturing will increase from 1.5 million per month to 2 million in Fall of 2001. This makes perfect sense since that will be the time of Metal Gear Solid 2, Grand Theft Auto and Final Fantasy X. Last but not least, Sony expects to ship an extra 20 million PS2s by fiscal year 2002, bumping the total shipment of the PS2 to 30 million. This is surely great news for all of us Sony fans out there, and we can finally shut the pie-holes on those frigin' nay-sayer analysts. Viva la Sony! :)
