Sony games sweep Award Ceremony.

On Friday at the Game Developer's Conference, the Academy of Interactive Arts and Science held an awards ceremony announcing the best titles in certain genres, and the overall game of the year. This is easily one of the most surprising award ceremonies I have ever heard of. Not only did Sony sweep the show with PSOne and PS2 titles, but the Console Game of the Year award went to Electronic Arts' PS2 snowboarder SSX. Here is the full list of winners:

Console Game of the Year
SSX, PlayStation 2

Action/Adventure Games of the Year
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Nintendo 64

Fighting Game of the Year
Dead or Alive 2, Dreamcast

Family Title of the Year
Mario Tennis, Nintendo 64

Racing Game of the Year
SSX, PlayStation 2

Roleplaying Game of the Year
Final Fantasy IX, PlayStation

Sports Game of the Year
SSX, PlayStation 2

Innovation in Computer Gaming
Shenmue, Dreamcast

I'm incredibly shocked that the PS2 version of DOA2 didn't win the fighting category, the PS2 version is better in every single aspect and it's no secret really. Aside from that, SSX took it home in the Console Game of the Year, Racing Game of the Year and Sports Game of the Year award. Meanwhile Final Fantasy IX mysteriously took down Square's Chrono Cross, I can't really argue much, and I understand the choice was hard, but I think a bare majority would prefer CC over FFIX. The following awards are in relation to technological achievements:

Art Direction
Final Fantasy IX, PlayStation

Animation
Final Fantasy IX, PlayStation

Sound Design
Medal of Honor: Underground, PlayStation

Musical Composition
Medal of Honor: Underground, PlayStation

Game Design
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Nintendo 64

Visual Engineering
SSX, PlayStation 2

Game Play Engineering
SSX, PlayStation 2

Character or Story Development
Baldur's Gate 2, PC

With no surprise Medal of Honor: Underground took home both audio awards, while SSX took home best visuals and gameplay. Final Fantasy IX picks up the Art Direction nod, and the Animation award. In total 9 out of the 16 awards went to Sony platform titles, that is 56% of the console awards. Congrats to Sony!
