PS2 officially not dropping price in North America
As rumors have been flying as Japan and Europe have both dropped the price of the PS2, SCEA has confirmed that a price drop will not happen in North America. The price reduction is now very similar to the price in the US and is understandable that there will be no further adjustment. An SCEA spokesman had this to say:
"The price will stay the same. We don't feel the need to drop the price. Remember that the European price, relative to the US price, was much higher than ours. Theirs is now more inline with our pricing."
With the Xbox shipping consoles at $299 November 15, 2001, and the Nintendo shipping the GameCube at $199 November 18, 2001, Sony has some heavy competition that will not be eased by a price drop. Expect a full out war with consoles as the holiday season swings around.
