PSXE Best Of The Best Poll Update: MGS Leans At The Wire!
Well, we figured it'd be a bitter battle to the finish, and it was exactly that. Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid, both of which ran away with the easy Gold medal in their respective genre categories, duked it out until the very end. This one couldn't have been closer, ladies and gents.
But by the narrowest of margins, Metal Gear Solid squeezes out the victory and now holds the distinguished PSX Extreme honor - bestowed by you, the readers - as the single greatest PS1 game of all time. What Konami began back in 1998 is now a legitimate phenomenon in the industry, and franchise creator Hideo Kojima is an established icon. Not only did Kojima and Co. introduce a relatively new form of gameplay in MGS, but the storyline was enough to make even the most loyal role-playing fans nod their heads in acknowledgment...hell, some even bowed. It was an experience that will live on in the hearts of millions, and it isn't likely to be forgotten as long as video games are in existence. Final Fantasy VII is regarded by many as the greatest RPG of all time, but at exactly 12:00 a.m., we had to take the poll as it stood: MGS beat out FFVII by one vote. That's right, one. We couldn't have asked for a better clash of the titans, and while we wanted to wait longer to get a clearer winner, rules are rules. Besides, this could've gone on forever.
So here are the results for the Best Overall PS1 game ever:
Gold Medal: Metal Gear Solid
Silver Medal: Final Fantasy VII
Bronze Medal: Tekken 3
Almost as an afterthought, Tekken 3 secures the Bronze, but the real story is clear. Now that we have finished our PS1 Best of the Best Polls, we are moving on to the PS2. The competition should be even stiffer, and as we did with the PS1, we'll start off with the Best RPG. It's guaranteed to be another close one, and again, the same rules apply- you have one week to pick your favorite, and at the end of the week, we will take the top 5 and move to the second and final round. So vote away! And if you want to debate, feel free to check out the official thread in the forums.
