Sony's "computer entertainment" plans are back and better than ever.

At an electronics trade show last week, Sony announced its master plan to develop the Playstation 2 far beyond a normal gaming console, revealing their scheme to eventually mold the system into, using a phrase the company has coined in the past, "computer entertainment." Sony plans to combine a number of audio and visual devices into the system in the future, with the console eventually serving as a control center, so to speak, to a number of appliances. Of course, the system includes a DVD player, and is just one example of Sony's plans to make the Playstation 2 the ultimate entertainment device.

Multimedia devices have been attempted in the past, with limited success, however in all fairness the market is much larger now than it was then, and consumers may well be ready for a system of this nature. I simply hope Sony won't forget about the gamers that got them to this position in the first place. There's money to be made in multimedia, but games should be the foundation of Sony's plans.
