Square-Enix Closes Eidos Deal

And so, the deal is done: Square-Enix has officially purchased Eidos for the price of £84.3 million ($120 million), a deal that greatly satisfied Eidos' board of directors and shareholders. But does it satisfy you, the gamer...?

It'll be interesting to see how Eidos operates beneath the Square-Enix umbrella, but initially, Square-Enix has "provided a blanket overview of how it plans to integrate Eidos into the Square-Enix Group." (source- GameSpot) We don't have all the details just yet, but the Japanese publisher did release new statistics for their legendary Final Fantasy franchise: they say that over 85 million FF units have been sold since the first title dropped way back in 1987, and furthermore, the Dragon Quest series has sold around 47 million units since 1986. As for Eidos, Tomb Raider is far and away their best-selling franchise, clocking in at approximately 30 million units since 1996; the critically acclaimed Hitman series is a distant second at 8 million units. Now, when the next Tomb Raider drops, it may be a little disorienting for veteran gamers to see the "Square-Enix" logo on the box, but hey, that's big business. We expect to see more details on their latest acquisition as time goes on, but for the time being, we can always speculate and wonder.

Square-Enix has been saying since the start of this generation that they want to push Westward, and picking up Eidos is certainly a step in the that direction. Whether or not it's the right step remains to be seen...
