May 2000

I first remember reading about Vagrant Story as a Final Fantasy Tactics sequel. Although that rumor wasn't a part of it, but technically was because the game will be directed by Yasumi Matsuno who also created FFT. This title really leaps over other Square games and shows itself as being the original one. The game has been released in Japan for about 2+ months now and it is getting nothing but rave reviews. Square is mostly known for its Final Fantasy titles, and it is a surprise to me that they would release a game like Vagrant Story. To recap a little, Vagrant Story was first introduced to us around October last year, and then we all got re-acquainted again at Square's Millennium Event. See Vagrants Story's main characters and the skinny on the title.

When I checked out the some footage of the game a while back, I was amazed and I literally couldn't believe that I was looking at a PS game. Honestly I don't think that Square's own FF8 is able to push the PS as much as Vagrant Story is pushing the console right now. Looking at the environments, they will make you open your mouth. Just check out the detail that Square has put into them, if you lose your jaw don't blame me I told you so. The animations are like no other, the characters are very sharp, solid and just look great. Every time Square releases another game they manage to push the PS an extra mile, that is extraordinary, considering the fact that the PS is already five years old. Reportedly the game opens with a real-time intro, but the FF8 CG team is behind all of the renderings and cut scenes that the game will have, so the game will feature CGs that will captivate every gamer. The atmosphere in the game is by far the best, the medieval mood is created with the games castles, dungeons, caves and more. Hopefully we could bring more to you as soon as we get our hands on Vagrant Story come this May.

This may very well be Square's greatest masterpiece. In Japan VS has been released for 2 months now, and the Japanese are still going ga-ga over the game. This game is basically every genre combined into one (except racing), you've got: action, adventure, RPG, and strategy/puzzle. Vagrant Story is about a criminal inspector she is currently inspecting a death. All of his inspecting leads to him to a conspiracy and he ends up in a medieval city, Lea Monde. The following is the games list of main characters:

Ashley: He (yes I said he) is a a member of the DCTF (Dangerouns Criminal Task Force) which is an organization in the Valendia Knights of Peace (VKP). He is in his late 20s enjoys long walks on the beach (err, sorry). The DCTF is also know as the RiskBreaker, they are the most risky and dangerous organization to work for.

Callo: He is also in his 20s (23 to be exact) and is also a member of the VKP Information Analysis Unit (IAU), much like the US' CIA. Callo earned a Pd.D in criminal psychology and religous psychology, and he was later on excepted to the IAU. Oh and this one is a she!

Duke Bardorba: He is the man responsible for the end to the civil war in Valendia. He was removed from his seat at the House of Lords because of his poor health.

Joshua: This little guy is the Duke's four year old son. A few things happen to him in the story, that I would rather not talk about (it's a spoiler).

Romeo Guildenstern: He is the head of the Crimson Blades-Knights of the Cross, this oranazation is controlled by the cardinal. They are basically a militia (police). He also attacked the Duke's manor at one time.

Hardin: This man is the man who planned the attack on the Duke's manor. He is a famous member of the Mullenkamp Cult.

Rosencrantz: He is Ashleys partner. He had already explored Lea Monde secretly, so he may be the best assistance you may get from him throughout the game. There is a little questioning going around on why Rosencrantz is helping Ashley, VKP's work alone...

Aside from the seven characters there are also six kinds of different monsters. You can kill everything from a human to a dragon to a phantom. Vagrant Story has so many features that it is mind boggling. First off you have a selection of 300 weapons! Swords, short-swords, and guns. The story is very intense, you are in the present world while you are later thrown into an area more of medieval setting. There is so much more to Vagrant Story, but I would go on forever. Just sit still 'till Vagrant Story's May 2000 release.

Vagrant Story is currently one of my most anticipated titles. Along with FF9, Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2, Spider Man and X-Men, Vagrant Story may very well be one of Square biggest moments in the sunlight. It is on track for a May release, if I were you I would hop off my couch and fly down to the local gaming shop and reserve Vagrant Story.
