Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear Preview
Red Storm's incredibly huge tactical first person strategy game Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear, has made big waves on PC's everywhere. The sequel to the critically acclaimed Rainbow Six, Rogue Spear puts you into the shoes of an R6 member to battle through terrorists and plane hijackers. Basically Rogue Spear shows you how its done in the real thing, boasting lovely visuals on the PC, and an addictively great online feature Rogue Spear is without a doubt one of the best PC games I have played. So it was no surprise that Red Storm would follow the release of the PS version of R6 with Rogue Spear. This time around Saffire (the developer of the N64 version) will be behind the project and Red Storm promises the game to be much better than the first R6 on PS. See the first screens and read the early info on the upcoming game.
The visuals look much cleaner than the first R6 for PS. The first thing that I noticed was the textures look more solid and real. Rainbow Six had very bad looking textures, they looked incredibly flat, grainy and just plain ugly. That may sound harsh but that's the way it was. The game is still in its extremely early stages, and what was shown on the E3 floor was about 10%. All you can do was explore the area, there were no enemies no nothing. But it seems that AI has been inserted and backup has been as well. The detail on all the on-screen characters is quite good, Saffire is doing a pretty good job of using the PS' capabilities. I can't really say much more, we just have to wait and see.
The PS version of R6 was rather shallow and took away the planning feature, that made the PC version so great. But this time around Saffire will bring Rogue Spear to the PS with the custom strategy feature. Not only that but everything that made the PC version so enjoyable will be available in the PS version (excluding the online gaming). What's more is that PS gamers will be getting a few Urban Ops levels in Rogue Spear as well. For those who don't know Urban Ops is a level expansion for Rogue Spear. There will be a total of 19 Rogue Spear missions, and that number being accompanied by a few levels from Urban Ops. The voice briefings will all be voice acted out for perfection and comprehension of the mission. And best of all if you shoot your enemy once in a deadly area (groin, head, body etc.) he will die, with one shot. That's the type of realism I like to see. Rogue Spear should be available this Winter 2000/2001. Hopefully this title doesn't turn out as bad as R6.
