Replay Value: 9
Although at the time of the release NBA season was in trouble, EA felt that it was the perfect time to release NBA Live '99. Why? Because all of those depressed fans needed a cure quickly. That just happened to be EA's excellent basketball sim NBA Live '99. Boasting great graphics, as well as unlimited replay value, NBA Live '99 sure as hell is the best basketball sim you can have.
EA motion captured all of the players in one way or another. Trying to make them look as real as possible, the makers ended up motion capturing body motions of some players and every face in the NBA. That task was accomplished successfully with an impressive outcome. Live '99 delivered graphics that are as real as ever, so short from looking like a real B-ball game transmitted on TV.
As mentioned before the graphics look very real, giving the game more gameplay. The game has almost an NBA Jam mode implanted in it. Which is used by turning of all rules. Gameplay is a definite plus in this game. The game is a blast to play with 2 or more friends. The game is 1 to 8 players might I add but we experienced many problems when we tried playing with three players at one time.
The part I was most disappointed about was the sound. Now that is usually EA's best aspect, but not this time. Actually I wasn't disappointed with the sound quality, just the commentators. They are pretty blah! Unlike Triple Play 2000, which has outstanding commentary may I add, NBA Live '99 suffers from commentators that only say about 20 phrases, and the name of all the NBA players. But I still wish the commentary would be a little better like TP 2000's. What is up with the menu music, Jazz? I mean come on.
The control is very good, easy to get used to and making the game tons of fun if mastered. I'm talking about the square and triangle buttons. The square button is a cross over, double tapping it will make the player dribble the ball behind his back. Pressing triangle will make the player turn his back to the defender, and tapping it twice makes the player spin to get through a jam. You may activate a play by holding select and and an assigned control button.
Finally the replay value, the best thing it this game. With the ability to create your own player, and changing almost everything about him, your own custom team, trading players, a three point shoot out, a practice mode, a playoff, season mode, and much much more, NBA live '99 will last you a very very long time.
