Correct me If I'm wrong but I remember Jackie Chan's Stuntmaster was announced around the time that Metal Gear Solid was released for PS. The game was supposed to be released around July of '99, but never made it, then it was pushed back to December, and then to February. Jackie Chan as you all know is the next best thing since Bruce Lee. He is known for doing his own stunts and on occasion breaking a bone or two during the movie shooting. It didn't take long for a publisher such as Midway to snag the Jackie license and portray it in a videogame. Jackie Chan is developed by Radical Entertainment, and is now released. See how the title does.

To get one thing straight the character detail is pretty, blah! That is probably the word best to describe character detail. Radical made all of the characters blocky and deformed. But they did an excellent job with the textures and backgrounds. There are lots and lots of bright colors that really set the mood of a certain level. When I saw the opening scene, I was very interested by the story, because I felt as if I was watching a real Jackie flick, but the characters shared the same detail as the gameplay. JCSM has pretty good visuals, the levels are fairly big and it seems as if detail was sacrificed for texture and background detail.

I always loved beat 'em ups. I have played tons that sucked and others such as Streets of Rage (SEGA) that totally blew my mind away. Stuntmaster doesn't blow me away but it doesn't suck. It is a fairly good title that needs some fine tuning. The game is pretty amusing and it will leave you content, but at some areas the game feels repetitive (although all beat 'em ups do sooner or later). (Spoiler Alert) The story starts out as Jackie was helping his father at a warehouse, there is an enemy who is about to kidnap Jackie's grandpa'. Jackie leaves and goes to get himself Chinese food, as he is eating he sees his grand pappy being driven off in a van. Like any of his movies he would chase the car performing death defying stunts. And after that the game picks up.

In Stuntmaster you go through multi leveled areas with more than one place to go. You would see pick ups such as life, weapons, just basic things that you would see in an average beat 'em up. What kicks ass is that not only do you fight on land, but you also fight on a speeding train, it was kind of fun and it reminded me of Syphon Filter 2. Since this is a stuntmaster, Jackie can perform wall hops, running of a wall and kicking, climbing a wall and kicking, a jump and kick, climbing, somersaulting and more. Jackie Chan's Stuntmaster has pretty good gameplay features, Jackie does many things that you would see him do in movies and that is pretty cool to see.

What Stuntmaster is pretty good at achieving is the sound. Jackie Chan lends his voice to the game so those who are Jackie fanatics can rejoice and be happy to know that Jackie does have the main role in voice acting. During gameplay he may say some comments, they are pretty funny and sound great. The tunes are somewhat repetitive, they have good beats but they get worn out soon. Still Stuntmaster has voice acting with Jackie Chan playing himself.

In a 2D based beat 'em up, control isn't too crucial. But a game like Stuntmaster which is 2D/3D you need tight controls, and that is just what Jackie has. Although the analog sticks have no sensitivity the Dual Shock works fine. The controller layout is pretty easy, Square is punch, X is jump, Triangle is kick, O is to throw and R1 is to tumble. All of these moves will help you through your journey.

Jackie Chan's Stuntmaster is a pretty decent game. It turned out better than I thought which was quite a surprise due to the game's many push backs. If you love Jackie you should pick up the game, if you love a girl (or guy) named Jackie you should at least rent Stuntmaster. Thumbs up for me, what about you Siskel, oops wrong daydream.
