When Driver was first announced last year by GTI, the game was considered to be a 3D version of Grand Theft Auto. The game's plot was simple, you are an undercover cop, who has been hired by a few criminals, to do pickups, drop offs, deliveries and more. The other cops are not aware that you are a police officer and will try to stop you. If your cover is blown you have to restart the mission.
GTI's Driver boast a very nice graphics engine, all the environments look very nice except the backgrounds which I will talk about a little later. First of, the cars look very detailed and chromed, the people walking look very very real, and the cities are huge and beautiful. Now the most disappointing aspects of the game are the backgrounds, the backgrounds look very plain and boxy and as said before disappointing.
This title is by far one of the most addictive and original car games right up there standing next to Grand Theft Auto. It's gameplay is excellent, the best I've ever seen in any racer. Driver has the most advanced AI (artificial intelligence) we here at PSX Extreme have ever seen. The cops are very aggressive and smart, they will stop at nothing to pull you over They will box you, jam you, and they will put a road block, literally covering the whole road.
Driver has very clear and nice speech voices, and the voice acting is superb. The car crashes, burning your wheel , the cars engine, and the police sirens sound great. And the game has a very kinky soundtrack, unlike Vigilante 8's which is totally 70's.
The game has very realistic car physics, which also features very smooth and tight controls that even the most un-advanced PSX gamer could get used to. The Dual-Shock is used remarkably in Driver, you can actually feel every thump, bump, scrape, hit etc.
The replay value was very high due to the many extras other than the main plot. There are a ton of missions to complete, with 4 large cities to explore, a few mini-games to enjoy, as well as a special cheat section to activate your codes. Driver is of the years top-notch titles, that deserves to be up there with such titles as Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, and Xenogears.
