FFXI release date set in Japan

SquareSoft announced today that it will be releasing both its PlayOnline service and Final Fantasy XI for the Playstation 2 on May 16. The game will contain 2 discs and will be priced at 7,800 yen ($58). Inside will be the game software itself and a separate disc for the installation of the PlayOnline service. Players will need the PS2 hard disc drive to run the service, which is free, however, a monthly fee of 1,280 yen ($9.50) will be charged for FFXI. The company highly recommends a broadband Internet connection via the Ethernet adapter on the HDD, but 56K modems can also be used with the PS2's USB ports.

No details have been announced yet concerning release dates for PlayOnline and FFXI in North America.
