989 Studios confirms MLB 2002 cancellation
989 Sports confirmed it will not be bringing a baseball game to the PS2 market this year. MLB 2002 was scheduled to appear on PS2 this spring, however, was cancelled due to complications.
"We had to make two goals," said a 989 Studios representative. "The games have to be of exceptionally high quality and they had to be released at the beginning of the season. And basically, we couldn't meet those goals. The games would have pushed it into mid-season, and so we decided to wait, so that next year's games will be deep and impactful.
"Just in case you're curious, the PS one game (MLB 2002) is amazing. These PS one games are still able to garner great market share, and MLB, just on the strength of the franchise, sells a good amount."
989 Sports division plans to release MLB 2003 next year. We thank IGN for their confirmed information.
