Infogrames buys Matrix rights
Interplay Entertainment announced today that is has agreed to sell Shiny Entertainment to the French publisher Infogrames. The deal was estimated at about $47 million, as Infogrames receives exclusive rights to develop and publish games based on upcoming sequels to the Wachowski Brothers picture, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. The games will be available on multiple platforms and will utilize Shiny Entertainment's Advanced Tessellation Technology.
"We are delighted to have signed this transaction with Infogrames, a company with a proven track record and reputation," said Interplay CEO Herve Caen. "For Interplay and its investors, successful conclusion of this transaction will enhance stability and position Interplay for growth. The sale of Shiny will significantly reduce the general corporate overhead of Interplay and allow the Interplay teams to focus on the continuing development of games based on its successful TSR licenses such as Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale."

According to Shiny Entertainment president Dave Perry, "This is going to be a big project. It's probably the most kick-ass project in the industry right now."
Regarding the deal, Mr. Perry also commented, "Infogrames has a legacy of attracting the best development teams in the business and they've built a reputation for being extremely supportive of creative talent. We are thrilled to be joining the Infogrames family, which clearly shares our enthusiasm for and belief in The Matrix franchise."
The upcoming Matrix sequel is scheduled to ship alongside the film in May 2003.
