E3 2002: EA shows of Madden 2003 online
Little were we expecting, as Ryan and I we were checking out some of the pre-E3 coverage, we happened to stumble across EA Sports' demonstration of Madden 2003's online capabilities for the Playstation 2. The demo featured Minnesota Vikings QB, Daunte Culpepper sitting on a comfy couch at E3, playing Madden 2003 against Jevon "the freak" Kearse of the Tennessee Titans, who was all the way in Orland, Florida. John Madden was commentating in front of a camera from Pleasanton, Connecticut -- and was of course doing the play-by-play. While everything did play smoothly and ran mostly without a hitch, ever few seconds (about 15-20) the game would freeze momentarily, but only for about a quarter of a second.
We took a glimpse at some of the menu designs and how the online setup works. You will create a name for yourself, and EA's servers will be keeping track of your statistics. Of course if you're not feeling the least bit confident, you can turn the statistic tracker off before beginning your match. As with any online title, Madden 2003 does feature an online lobby and a chat function that will grant the player access to rooms and instant messaging somebody -- respectively.
The most asked question regarding Madden 2003 is 'will updated rosters be downloadable'? The answer is yes. EA Sports has confirmed downloadable rosters for updates. At the moment, EA expects to ship Madden somewhere around the end of the summer time, and definitely close to the launch of the PS2's online network adapter, which will retail for 34.99.
