PS2 hits 50 million
Sony announced today that sales of the PlayStation 2 have reached 50 million units worldwide. The console has officially shipped 21.5 million PlayStation 2s to North America, 16 million to Europe, and 12.5 million in Japan since its debut in March 2000 (Japan).
Nintendo has also projected sales numbers, with the GameCube planned to hit 16 million units by March 30. Microsoft projects 9 million to 11 million Xbox consoles by the end June 30, roughly 40 million less then that of Sony. Remember, though, that both the GC and Xbox arrived a year after the PlayStation 2.
