Mature Games Under Legislation

With the recent passing of Washington State House Bill 1009 it has been announced that businesses who knowingly sell or rent mature videogames to minors could be fined up to $500. Mary Lou Dickerson is the person responsible for the legislation, as she is the chairwoman of the House Juvenile Justice and Family Law Committee in Seattle. Dickerson attempted to initiate a voluntary program amongst special-interest groups and companies such as Nintendo of America; however, her attempts went unnoticed and caused her to introduce this new bill to legislation. Although Bill 1009 has not yet officially passed into law, it is strongly believed that it soon will. Game Industry Organizations are expected to protest the decision and will challenge the ruling with further hearings. Due to this fact, Dickerson has targeted such games as GTA: Vice City, which specifically depict violence towards police officers. Apparently, this type of strategy has been used in the past and is the most successful among violence cases.
