New PS2 Model Showcased

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan announced today that it will reveal the brand new SPCH-50000 model of the PlayStation 2 to Japan on May 15. The console will sell for 25,000 yen ($207), as it allows gamers to play DVD-R, DVD-RW, R+, and RW+ on their systems for the very first time. Progressive scans for DVD movies and videogames will now be available; however, the mode will not be available for recorded discs. Other features include opening and closing the disc tray, turning the power on and off with the remote, the addition of a built-in infrared sensor housed directly inside the system, a 30% less-noisy fan, and a 400g weight decrease.

Strangely, though, with this announcement, the PlayStation 2's IEEE 1394 FireWire port has been completely removed. No word has been given for the reason, nor has a North American release date been released. We'll keep you updated with the story.
