Namco and Sega Merger Negotiations
It appears Sega will be very busy in the upcoming weeks, as proposals continue to make their way to the company. Most recently, Namco has confirmed its request for a merger with Sega. Apparently, as of September 2001, the two companies united in the arcade field and possible merger negotiations stemmed from there. However, at Sega's request, talks of a merger were temporarily put to rest.
Sega has reported that Namco has contacted its people with furter details concerning a merger, and Sega will examine the offer over the next few days. With that said, it is expected that Sega will make an announcement as early as April 23 at its executive meeting. With merger offers already being made by Sammy, Sega's decision will hold a lot of weight in the industry. According to Sammy, it was not aware of the current situation with Namco and Sega, as it was hoping to finalize merger plans in May, and conclude the operation in October.
Sega also has received interest from Electronic Arts, as the company is considering acquiring a stake in Sega. With possible merger intentions from both Namco and Sammy, EA is paying close attention to Sega's eventual decision. We also know everyone else is very interested in the state of Sega and the possibilities of a merger, so stay tuned for further information.
