E3 2003: Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain Hands-on Impressions
Syphon Filter returns, and finally, it's for the PS2. Gabe Logan is back, but this time around you work for him and he orders you around. Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain is bound to make an explosive debut on the PS2 this upcoming February. The controls of the previous three have been retained, but various enhancements have been made. As a whole, the game controls incredibly well. The targeting is superbly done. R1 is to lock-on. Meanwhile, L1 takes you into first-person view and you’ll be able to perform a headshot from there on. The action is well paced and pretty addictive – especially online. The game looks good and moves at a very consistent and steady frame rate. There are tons of weapons, all of which can be picked up after killing enemies. Speaking of which, the enemy AI is very good. Your opponents will duck, roll and strafe around to avoid being shot.
In all certainty, Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain is poised to be one of the PS2’s biggest titles when it launches in February 2004. Based on what I played today, I walked away very impressed and assured of success.
