E3 2003: Silent Hill 3 hands on impressions

Survival horror is big. It has been since Resident Evil came out in 1995. Silent Hill, though, is a big reason why this genre has become so popular. With amazing graphics and realistically disturbing atmosphere, Silent Hill has been a series that always improved upon itself. Silent Hill 3 is no exception, itís just as innovative as the last game in the series.

Silent Hill 3 looks good, and by good, I mean really, really, really, really, really amazing! This could end up being one of the best looking games ever made, and I doubt anyone who has played the gorgeous 2nd game in the series would find that hard to believe. Silent Hill 3 still has that grainy effect employed in the last title, but itís done a little better so that itís obvious that itís there for effect and not because itís some graphical imperfection. Even with that grainy effect, there is still so much detail visible itís amazing.

However, that really is where the enhancements stopped. Nothing of the story was really revealed, but the exploration and control were basically a clone of the last game. Of course, this doesnít have to be a bad thing. With a game like Silent Hill, whatís really important is story and atmosphere. Silent Hill 3 definitely has atmosphere, but weíll have to see how well Konami delivers on the story end.
