E3 2003: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Hands-on Impressions
For anyone in their 20’s, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were the iconoclastic cartoon heroes of youth. They were cool, and they said ‘cowabunga’ a lot, which made them even cooler. They’ve had a few runs on older systems, and now they are making their way to the Playstation 2. While work still needs to be done, TMNT is showing some promise, and with some amazing graphics to boot.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a great looking game. It looks just like your favorite cartoons of yesteryear, but much smoother and more refined. The visuals are coming along quite nicely, although there are still some areas that are in need of a bit of work, but all the kinks should be ironed by the time the game ships.
The gameplay in TMNT was still a bit rough, though. It was hard to land your attacks because there really was no way to effectively target your enemies. You could use two different buttons for attack, changing up the power and speed with which your chosen ninja attacks. You could also incorporate jumps into your attack to give yourself an advantage against tricky foes. It still all needs to be put together into a cohesive combat system, though, and if anyone can make a good Turtles game, it’s Konami.
