Sony announces new gaming hybrid product
According to Reuters, Sony Corporation is planning to reveal a new game product called the "PSX." Expected for release in Japan this year, the machine will come with a TV tuner, hard disk drive, and DVD recorder to create a universal platform for games, music, and motion pictures. The news directly follows the announcement of Sony's new handheld hardware called PSP, which is expected to be shipped by the end of 2004. Concerning the PSX, the company stated, "The product will integrate games, pictures and music using advanced semiconductor technology, combining real-time game operating systems and fast DVD/hard-disk recorders."
Sony further commented that the PSP and PSX "will mark the beginning of a new series of products that will unite the most advanced electronics devices with the leading-edge semiconductor technology associated with the game sector." This news has especially hit Nintendo hard, with the companies stock shares taking a dramatic fall. The Playstation 2 has continued its success over both the Xbox and GameCube in the last several months, so news with this much impact may severely alter competition with next-generation consoles.
