Activision Cancels Star Trek Contract
Activision announced recently that it has filed a lawsuit against Viacom for breach of contract concerning the Star Trek lable. Viacom is a media company that owns numerous big-name companies, such as Paramount Pictures, CBS, MTV, and others. Activision is claiming that Viacom hasn't followed the 10-year licensing contract set forth in 1998 by the two companies, which requires Viacom to continue producing and promoting Star Trek films and television shows.
Activision states, "through its actions and inactions, Viacom has let the once proud Star Trek franchise stagnate and decay." Also, the company alleges that Viacom has admitted that it does not intend on working on any further Star Trek movies. Therefore, Activision has officially terminated the licensing agreement, stating that it is unable to develop Star Trek games without proper marketing, such as movie and television production. Activision did released Star Trek Elite Force II last week, but there are no plans for upcoming projects.
