Activision acquires Tenchu rights.

Not only does Activision now possess the North American rights to the lucrative Tenchu series, the industry's oldest third party developer has also recently confirmed that they have acquired worldwide rights to publish the next Tenchu installment as well. The latest in the series will appear on Sony's PlayStation 2. Activision has its hands full with fourteen games being developed for Sony's 128-bit console, one of which is the mentioned Tenchu title.

"Technu remains the leading franchise in the stealth action genre," stated Ron Doornick, the president and COO of Activision." He continued, "The acquisition of this property further underscores Activision's commitment to brands that can be market leaders across all platforms. The PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system's advanced technology will allow us to build and expand on the revolutionary gameplay already established in the Tenchu series." Certainly bold claims, and I'm sure Konami would have something to say about the "leading franchise in the stealth action genre" comment Doornick made, but the PlayStation 2 should certianly prove an exciting medium for the next installment in the Tenchu series.

Birth of the Silent Assassins and Silent Assassins (the titles just beg for Joe Lieberman's attention) were both developed by the Japanese third party developer Acquire.
