Sony's 3rd Quarter Results
Sales and operating revenue in Sony’s Game division tumbled 4.5 percent in the quarter, to 367.0 billion yen (approximately $3.48 billion U.S.), from last year’s 384.1 billion yen (approximately $3.64 billion U.S.). Operating income also fell in the division in year-over-year results, to 70.5 billion yen (approximately $668.1 million U.S.), from 71.7 billion yen (approximately $679.43 million U.S.).
Sony noted that PlayStation 2 hardware unit sales actually increased in Japan, the U.S. and Europe, but revenue decreased due to price reductions. Software-wise, overall unit sales set a record in the quarter, with a drop in PS one software sales more than offset by a gain in PS2 software sales.
Sony shipped 6.83 million PS2 hardware units in the quarter, a drop of 1.2 million from a year-ago, and 1.02 million PS one hardware units, a drop of 2.0 million units.
104.0 million software units for the PS2 were shipped in the three month period, a gain of 25.0 million units, while PS one software shipments slipped to 10.0 million units, from 22.0 million a year earlier.
