PSP Gets Delayed

The latest news on the PSP is that Sony has pushed back the release of its handheld gaming system until 2005. When the product was originally announced at the 2003 E3Expo, Sony had indicated a target release date of late 2004. Now, it is slated to appear before the end of the company’s next fiscal year, which wraps-up on March 31, 2005. So the delay only tacks on a few months to the release date, at least for now.

A postponement extends to only the North American and European markets, as the device is apparently still on schedule to be issued in Japan this holiday season. A spokesperson said the release was delayed in order to ensure the presence of a “reasonable” amount of software titles at the PSP’s launch.

Stewart Halpern, an analyst for RBC Capital Markets, termed the delay “no big deal,” at least in terms its affect on publishers, because none “had been counting on PSP game sales to make a noticeable contribution in the 2004 calendar year."
