Sony Talks About Online Success

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has weighed in with some facts and figures related to its apparently booming online PlayStation 2 community. The company said the PS2 online audience grew to a total of 2.6 million users this month, with over 67,000 new users registering online in February, a 239.0 percent jump over the previous year.

SCEA also said that the hours of 5:00 to 11:00 PM were the peak usage times, with 18-34 year old males making up about 65.0 percent of prime time users. The company theorizes that “online gaming may increasingly pose a challenge for broadcasters,” citing Nielsen Media Research, which reported in September “an unusual 8 percent decline among the already elusive audience of men ages 18 to 34.”

That data, coupled with an earlier released mass media report that pointed towards computer games as poaching from the prime time programming audience, indicates that videogames, regardlesss of platform, may indeed be a growing problem for network and cable TV programmers.
