G4 Buys Tech TV

Comcast Corp. has entered into an agreement to purchase TechTV, Inc. from Vulcan Programming, and, upon closure of the deal, will fold TechTV into its videogame-focused television channel G4. EchoStar Communications Corporation will retain an equity interest in the merged unit and will make the channel available on its DISH Network. Financial terms were not disclosed.

G4 is now seen in 15.0 million homes, while TechTV, launched in 1998, is now available in 43.0 million households. Interestingly enough, Vulcan Programming is a division of Vulcan Capital, which in turn is part of Vulcan, Inc., a company founded by Paul G. Allen, the former Microsoft Corp. executive who is now chairman of (and the largest shareholder in) Charter Communications, an adversary of Comcast in the cable TV space.
