PS3 Medium Decided?

In a report by Asahi PC, Sony Vice President Kiyoshi Nishiani stated that Sony would, "like to establish a ground by adopting read-only BD-ROMs for a home video game console." It is Nishiani's task at Sony to ensure that BD-ROM technology is a success in the next generation of home entertainment. While not mentioning the Playstation 3 by name, and thus avoiding direct confirmation, Nishiani's comments are in line with the long-standing rumors of Playstation 3 using BD-ROM.

BD-ROM, or Blu-ray Disc is eventually expected to replace DVDs and CDs in the marketplace. While a dual-layered DVD-ROM can hold up to 9 GB, a dual-layered BD-ROM can hold up to 50 GB. Inclusion in the Playstation 3 would surely help to speed up the acceptance of BD-ROM in the marketplace.

Furthermore, since BD-ROM discs are the same physical size and use the same method to retrieve data as a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM, the planned backwards compatibility of the Playstation 3 will not be affected by this choice of medium.
