Enroute Inc. a new player in PlayStation 2 middleware program.
Today, Enroute Inc. confirmed that it has entered into Sony's Tools & Middleware program for the company's newest system, the PlayStation 2. Enroute is to make available a toolkit to licensed PS2 developers. This toolkit is to empower PlayStation 2 developers with the ability to incorporate Enroute's FirstPerson Immersive Video technology into PS2 products. The technology is significant because it makes it possible to weld together multiple streams of video captured by 360-degree cameras together into a single, high-quality stream that makes allows for the user to change to their discretion the panning, tilt and zoom of the visuals while the affected video is still in full motion.
"The FirstPerson Immersive Video format will expand the breadth of content currently being developed for home entertainment platforms," stated Paul Cha, the executive vice president of Enroute. He elaborated, "With the upcoming release of our toolkit, PlayStation 2 software developers will able to deliver this exciting new category of entertainment."
The FirstPerson tools are rapidly gaining popularity, as titles using the technology are being developed at present for the PlayStation 2, however several other consoles are to feature games which utilize the FirstPerson tools. The premiere PlayStation 2 application utilizing the tools is to be released in January of 2001.
