Rome Mayor Wants Rule Of Rose Banned

It may come as a surprise to those in the U.S. and Japan, but it appears the Mayor of Rome has taken offense to one of the latest survival/horror video games, Rule of Rose. Walter Veltroni wants to ban the title in Italy due to "depraved" content, and the left-wing politician has been quoted as saying:

"There is no way that a violent game should be sold and distributed in our country [...] this game must not enter Italian homes," said Veltroni. "Our youngsters are living through difficult times, with violence present on a daily basis throughout the media… Small children have the right to be shielded from violence."

The game is set in 1930s England and follows the story of a young girl named Jennifer, who has a run-in with the Red Crayon Aristocrats, a group of orphaned children who utilize a variety of violent and humiliating rituals to control people. Most of the game's questionable content is found in the meticulously designed FMV sequences by Shirogumi; explicit violence in the gameplay itself is tough to find. However, there are several disturbing scenes that are certainly for adult audiences.

Initially self-published by Sony in Japan and set for distribution by 505 Games in the UK and Europe, Rule of Rose was not a top-seller in the U.S. And as for a Sony comment, Corrado Buonanno, head of the company's Italian division, had this to say-

"Probably, the sense of what's acceptable in Japan and what's acceptable in Europe are different, so our Japanese division did not feel the need to block this game. But from our point of view, this game is unsuitable for the Italian and European public because of its content."

As of now, the game is set to be released throughout Europe on November 24, with the PEGI rating of 16+ and a "V" for Violence. We find it a little bizarre they chose Rule of Rose to get in a twist over, especially considering how many other games there are with much more explicit violence in the gameplay. And furthermore...the game isn't even that good..
