Rockstar Announces Manhunt 2

Rockstar, one of the true kings of controversial video games, is making a sequel to one of the most controversial titles in recent memory. The publisher announced today they'll be producing Manhunt 2 for the PS2, PSP, and Wii. The freshly formed Rockstar London team will be at the reigns for the PS2 and PSP versions, while Rockstar Toronto will handle the Wii version.

The original was a moderately successful over-the-top violent action game that featured some seriously nasty stuff. You could execute enemies via wire stranglings, bash their skulls with a crowbar, and generally wreak brutal havoc. Of course, it was on many anti-game activists' hit lists for quite a while, and perhaps due to that attention, the sequel is now in the works.

"With Manhunt 2 we have tried to create a game that stays close to the original concept of chilling suspense and stealth, whilst pushing the game design and storytelling forward," said Sam Houser, founder and executive producer of Rockstar Games. "We are also excited to have our newest development team, Rockstar London, working on the title alongside our two established UK studios, Rockstar North and Leeds."

Perhaps what's most interesting about this announcement is the fact the game will be available on the Wii. For the most part, Nintendo keeps their consoles "family-friendly," staying away from previous violent multiplatform games like Grand Theft Auto. Manhunt 2 isn't something mommy is going to pick up for little Johnny, nor is it a normal follow-up to something like Wii Sports and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz. Maybe Nintendo is trying to reach a wider age demographic...?

Well, anyway, the game is due out this summer in the U.S.
