Rockstar: Manhunt 2 "Clearly For Adults"
Well, we figured the announcement of Manhunt 2 would cause a bit of an uproar. And because those offended by the idea are sure to be vocal, Rockstar is already adopting defensive positions. In a recent interview with UK trade publication Magazine MCV, one Rockstar representative said, "it is clearly a game aimed at an adult audience."
Of course, we all knew that, but Rockstar certainly needed to go public with such a statement. Otherwise, the naysayers might start claiming the publisher is the devil, out to purposely corrupt our youth.
"We believe Manhunt 2 is a great entertainment experience for fans of psychological thrillers and urban horror," the rep continued. "It's a chilling and compelling drama and is only appropriate for people who are old enough to play it."
This should quell some of the outcries, but Rockstar knows it won't quiet them all. In fact, in addition to defending Manhunt 2 in the most polite way possible, the spokesman further offered "respect" for those with contrasting viewpoints.
"We respect those who have different opinions about the horror genre and video games as a whole, but we hope they will also consider the opinions of gamers. Rockstar submits every game to the appropriate bodies for rating and classification and in the case of Manhunt 2 it is clearly a game aimed at an adult audience and we anticipate that it will receive an 18+ rating."
The original was banned in several countries and the sequel will likely follow suit, but Rockstar is making things crystal clear: they didn't design the game for youngsters, and they don't believe kids should be playing it. This should appease some of the wannabe Jack Thompsons out there (and maybe even Thompson himself).
Just one last question, Rockstar: are you really making this game available for the Nintendo Wii...? Seriously, what's up with that?
