PS2 News: Japan Sales, Sony PSP Outsells Nintendo DS Twice in a Row

Japan Sales, Sony PSP Outsells Nintendo DS Twice in a Row

First we get news that the PlayStation 3 is outselling the Xbox 360 in Europe. Then last night we find out that for January it outsold the Xbox 360 in the U.S., and sold as much as the Nintendo Wii in. Now, some more good news for Sony; for the second week in a row, the PSP has outsold the almighty Nintendo DS in Japan. For the week of January 28th-February 3rd, the PlayStation Portable outsold the Nintendo DS by 5k units; the PSP sold 72,500, and the Nintendo DS 67,500k.

For the week of February 4th-10th, that gap has widened considerably, as the PSP outsold the Nintendo DS by over 15k units; the PSP sold 76k systems, and the DS moved 60,500. But not all was great news for Sony, as the PlayStation 3 actually saw a drop in console sales its most recent week.

The PS3 sold 24k consoles, where as the week before it sold close to 42k - thanksto the launch of Devil May Cry 4. Hopefully sales of the the PlayStation 3 pick up, as next week Japan will see Capcom's PS3 release of Lost Planet, a former Xbox 360 exclusive.

Below is sales data from both aforementioned weeks:

February 4th-10th:
Nintendo Wii - 81,737
Sony PSP - 75,912
Nintendo DS - 60,464
Sony PS3 - 23,985
Sony PS2 - 11,038
Xbox 360 - 3,615

Jan. 28th-Feb. 3rd
Nintendo Wii - 94,473
Sony PSP - 72,528
Nintendo DS - 67,472
Sony PS3 - 41,796
Sony PS2 - 12,115
Xbox 360 - 6,060

That's really amazing considering that there was no new PSP game to help boost the numbers as well. I hope the PSP can keep this up. With numbers like these, the PSP will last for several more years to come.
