Fans To Square-Enix: No More Sequels

Perusing the news today, we came across an editorial that is good enough to warrant an update from us. Square-Enix and Final Fantasy fans will want to read it, and you can check it out over at Square Union's site, but we'll give you a quick summary and provide our own opinion (which is very similar).

The crux of the article centers on the veteran RPG publisher's latest milking trend when it comes to the legendary Final Fantasy franchise. For many years, starting back on the NES and proceeding all the way through the PS2 generation, Square-Enix produced more than a few FF titles. And for the most part, none of them could be considered "sequels," as every last entry boasted an entirely new world, cast of characters, and gameplay systems; from Espers to Materia to Junction to the Sphere Grid. However, over the past few years we've started to see titles that fall within a previous entry's universe, like Dirge of Cerberus and Final Fantasy X-2 (the latter being far better than the former). These games simply don't do as well, and even Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, the long-awaited prequel for the PSP, isn't doing anywhere near as well in sales as earlier FF titles.

The bottom line is simple- fans want Square-Enix to get back to doing what they do best, and that's making entirely new games with the FF label on them. No more prequels or sequels; we just want something like Final Fantasy XIII. We completely agree, although we still desperately want that FFVII's a remake, not a sequel, after all.
