No More Content Approval For PS2, Global PSN Possible?

This whole video game explosion over the past few decades has swept the world, so it only makes sense to make certain aspects of the industry more accessible to the entire planet.

According to GameDaily and DevelopMag, SCEE's George Bain has announced several major changes for the PS2 and PS3. Speaking at the Casual Connect conference in Kiev, Bain first said that Sony "has abolished the content approval process for PlayStation 2 titles," which means one can now accurately label the system as an "open platform." Furthermore, he said that the "firm's approvals process has been streamlined into a global system": previously, a game needed to be approved for Japan, Europe and North America separately, but now, it only needs to be approved once and this approval will include all three major regions. This should extend to the PlayStation Network as well, so there should only be one approval process for anything PSN-related. Obviously, this opens the floodgates for a variety of changes, and the world as a whole doesn't need to feel so restricted. No need to separate the three main regions anymore, right?

We wonder at the idea of a single, global PSN, where nothing is region-locked and every update applies to Japan, Europe, and the U.S. Given Sony's new focus on worldwide accessibility, perhaps we're not far away from a completely open Sony community.
