PSXE Best Of The Best Poll Update: Final Fantasy X Snags Crown
Well, the PS2 RPG Best of the Best Poll has come to an end, and once again, we're surprised at the result: even though the two Final Fantasy titles went head-to-head for the #1 slot in the first week, one separated itself from the rest of the pack and the other slipped behind Kingdom Hearts II!
The one that separated itself; the clear winner that may not come as any surprise to role-playing aficionados, is Final Fantasy X. It put a fine cherry atop the software sundae that was the unbelievable 2001 PS2 software lineup (Gran Turismo 3, Red Faction, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Onimusha: Warlords, Twisted Metal: Black, etc.). FFX became the quality benchmark of the generation and many will argue that it was never topped during the rest of the PS2's lifespan. In many ways, FFX was to the PS2 as FFVII was to the PS1, which is probably why both games won their respective genre categories in our Best of the Best Polls. The fantastic storyline, the stunning visuals, the new level-less gameplay featuring the Sphere Grid and the ability to switch characters in and out on a whim...it was all fantastic, and to this day remains one of the most memorable gaming experiences in history. We don't question this decision by the readers at all, but we're a little confused as to how Kingdom Hearts II snagged the Silver away from Final Fantasy XII.
Well, we can't agree with that in the least, but it's the readers that matter in this contest, and here are your final results for the Best PS2 RPG:
Gold Medal: Final Fantasy X
Silver Medal: Kingdom Hearts II
Bronze Medal: Final Fantasy XII
And now, we move on to the Best PS2 Platformer, which should be a very close contest. If you're wondering why you don't see multiple entries for the Ratchet and Clank and Jak franchises, this is because we simply picked the best of each and signed 'em up. There are plenty of other qualified applicants, remember. Check to see if your favorite is in there - it probably is - and vote today!
