PSXE Best Of The Best Poll Update: Final Fantasy X Snags Crown

Well, the PS2 RPG Best of the Best Poll has come to an end, and once again, we're surprised at the result: even though the two Final Fantasy titles went head-to-head for the #1 slot in the first week, one separated itself from the rest of the pack and the other slipped behind Kingdom Hearts II!

The one that separated itself; the clear winner that may not come as any surprise to role-playing aficionados, is Final Fantasy X. It put a fine cherry atop the software sundae that was the unbelievable 2001 PS2 software lineup (Gran Turismo 3, Red Faction, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Onimusha: Warlords, Twisted Metal: Black, etc.). FFX became the quality benchmark of the generation and many will argue that it was never topped during the rest of the PS2's lifespan. In many ways, FFX was to the PS2 as FFVII was to the PS1, which is probably why both games won their respective genre categories in our Best of the Best Polls. The fantastic storyline, the stunning visuals, the new level-less gameplay featuring the Sphere Grid and the ability to switch characters in and out on a whim...it was all fantastic, and to this day remains one of the most memorable gaming experiences in history. We don't question this decision by the readers at all, but we're a little confused as to how Kingdom Hearts II snagged the Silver away from Final Fantasy XII.

Well, we can't agree with that in the least, but it's the readers that matter in this contest, and here are your final results for the Best PS2 RPG:

Gold Medal: Final Fantasy X

Silver Medal: Kingdom Hearts II

Bronze Medal: Final Fantasy XII

And now, we move on to the Best PS2 Platformer, which should be a very close contest. If you're wondering why you don't see multiple entries for the Ratchet and Clank and Jak franchises, this is because we simply picked the best of each and signed 'em up. There are plenty of other qualified applicants, remember. Check to see if your favorite is in there - it probably is - and vote today!

Wait just one minute...Best PS2 Platformer, and Vexx isn't on the list?!? I'd say Vexx or Psychonauts were the sleeper hits in that generation...anyone else agree?

FFX was, and still is incredible. Hmm should Jak and Daxter 1 really be on the same list as Ratchet and Clank 3 though?

FFX was such a great game. Last night I tried the LBP level that has the song "to zanarkind", everyone with a copy of LBP should try that level.

I played it in the Beta, frankly now I'm surprised it hasn't fallen victim to the copyright violation machine.

X was pretty awesome, the only complaint I had about that was the lack of manual flight with the airship. XII would have been a much better game if they had stuck to the swap-in characters method instead of the autopilot system. I know people hate random battles but they have their advantages.

Kingdom Heart's ok....I didn't find it too great
I mean seriously Disney?

ANYWAY, how come Jak2/Jak3 aren't there?(it should've been "Jak series")

And how come Ape Escape2 is there when Ape Escape3 was the better one? :(

FF7 to PSX is as FF10 to PS2, also as FF13v13 to PS3. Conclusion: History just repeats itself (the first ff series for that generation is the system defining game for the console).

I'm playing FFX right now. I've had the game for 6 years no and I still haven't clocked it. Bloody good game though. I'm trying to kill Seymour when he's in that machine thing in the mountains and he uses "Full-life". Bastard lol.

KH2 came second because it's just plain better than FF12. Everyone wanted to know what happened to Riku and Mickey after KH1, so when they 4 years were up everyone rushed out to buy it, and the new additions to the game (reaction commands, drive forms, Riku being IN the party at one point) sold it. FF12 is a good game, but in all honesty it was just a test for the a new battle system by SE. They could have easily made a batter FF12 and called that something else, but oh well... But yeah, KH2 is just a better game in geneal, I can't wait for a third one :)

Speaking of kingdom hearts, somebody should make an article about KH3 rumors and such... maybe some screens shots, real or not...

My girlfriend is obsessed with these games.
